As an enthusiastic and long-time Zoom equipment user, including the H1 and H1n, I biught this model to get the 32 bit float feature, and also because I’d read good things about the improved user interface. 32 bit float means the recorder doesn’t have a gain control, and can record whatever level you throw at it. For recording live amplified music gigs, this has been a real asset. Recordings are no longer clipped if louder than I anticipated, or lacking detail if quieter. I just press record and forget about it. However, if you are using it to record low-volume sounds, you will find the preamps are so noisy. To be fair, the H1n suffers from the same issue. The revised user interface is underwhelming. The screen is still not that legible, and since there is no level setting, the ever present waveform display is just eye-candy. Most annoying feature is that it still will not remember the date and time settings when you swap batteries, and setting the date and time through the button interface every time is so fiddly. I also haven’t been able to download files via the USB interface, so not sure what they’ve changed there. So in summary, if you are recording live loud events where you don’t have time to set levels and want to be sure you are getting the full dynamic range, it is a useful upgrade from the H1n. The built in capsule mics are not amazing but they are more than adequate for field recording for relatively amateur usage. The 32bit float is awesome, set and forget no need to monitor constantly. If you are recording in varied environments (I use for airsoft with loud bangs and quiet sneaky bits) it’s great. I also use in conjunction with a Røde video micro to avoid the inbuilt mics and a CM5 lav by Neewer. It’s a Good, relatively cheap, versatile, small form factor, easy to use quality recorder for anyone to pick up and run with. Recommend it so far!

This recorder is an incredibly useful tool for capturing rehearsals—highly recommended! I’m giving it 4 stars because the built-in mic could be better, though it’s still quite decent. Having previously used 16-bit and 24-bit recorders from Zoom and Roland, I often ran into issues where incorrect gain settings ruined the entire recording. With this 32-bit float recorder, I consistently get usable, high-quality material every time. A game-changer for hassle-free recording!

November 2024 Model: H1essential Seeing the reviews from pro users made me feel a little apprehensive to be honest but I gave it a shot anyway. Glad I did. Not only did this thing survive being outside for 4 hours but it captures very good audio as well! I’m very happy with it!

There seems to be several versions of the Zoom H1, and initially we purchased the Essential H1 version which, whilst being simpler to use and having a very clear screen only recorded in WAV format. This version is the H1 ‘Handy Recorder’ records in multiple formats, mp3 & wav, with multiple options so has more features (than the Essential) but is a little bit more complicated to set up. It is still very easy to use, one button to record & stop, and is great device. The only downside I have noted so far is it seems a bit ‘thirsy’ with regard to batteries.

Although I already have many recorders, I couldn’t resist purchasing this for mostly the recording of stereo ambient sound. I popped in a 256GB MicroSD card which gives me circa 100 hours of recording time at the highest sample rate. I added the excellent Rycote wind jammer and a BROPROTECT glass LCD protector. and a nice wrist strap and a couple of high quality NiMh rechargeable batteries. My first recording was inside a train carriage and I could hear people speaking on playback, that I couldn’t hear myself during the recording. Unusually there is a built-in sound level ‘normaliser’ which you can use after making the recording. It’s a bit slow, but it works well in upping the 32 bit float recording to something which is immediately usable, without having to edit the recording in your preferred audio program.

The Zoom H1e (H1 Essential) is a compact, budget-friendly portable recorder that offers some notable upgrades over its predecessors, including the H1 and H1n. Here’s a detailed review based on its performance and features: Pros: 1. 32-bit Float Recording: This ensures a wide dynamic range and minimizes clipping issues, making it an excellent choice for varying sound levels. 2. Lightweight and Portable: The small form factor is ideal for on-the-go recording and content creation. 3. Dual-Microphone XY Configuration: Captures stereo audio with clarity and depth. 4. Affordable Price: At around $100, it offers a solid set of features for the price. 5. Versatile Input Options: Includes a 3.5mm microphone input, enhancing its usability with external mics. Cons: 1. Handling Noise: The recorder is sensitive to handling noise, which can affect recordings if care isn’t taken. 2. Preamp Noise: Its preamps introduce a noticeable noise floor, particularly in quiet environments or with sensitive microphones. 3. Limited Wind Protection: The built-in microphones are prone to plosives and wind noise, requiring an external windscreen for outdoor use. Conclusion: The Zoom H1e is a solid entry-level recorder for vloggers, podcasters, musicians, and field recordists. Its 32-bit float recording and portability are its standout features, though users may need to invest in accessories like windscreens or external mics for optimal performance. It’s an excellent value-for-money option for those needing quality recording on a budget. 2 people found this helpful
