Not only does this work for standard applications such as recording meetings in very high quality 24bit96kHz, or record live music, but this recorder is super useful for samplers that like to find unique sounds in the world. If this sounds like you, then you are in luck. The distortion is low, the sound is crystal clear, and the unit is durable. It also has 2 XLRTRS inputs for external mics and instruments, and can record up to 4 tracks. This tool can be a workhorse for recording samples.

Super quality recordings. I have used it to record myself and other artists playing live in pubs. The quality is amazing. I have used it directly from the line out on a PA amp and again quality is of a professional standard. I am still experimenting with some of the special functions so watch this space. The built in speaker is o.k to check content but you only realise the true quality of the recording when you play back into good quality headphones or play it into a good quality hifi amplifier.

This very powerful, very clean sounding 4 track recorder easily packs into a gig bag, pedal board pocket or pants pocket to allow you to quickly rough out song ideas on the road or to be thrown up in the band practice room to record practice and really see how off time your drummer was that nightThey make great dictation recorders for students in classrooms or business professionals wanting to record thoughts in high clarity. This is a real hands on product review from Ryan Sam Ash in Phoenix, AZ

Lots of pro features, simple to use, very good quality hardware and recording. I would have liked to see a 3.5mm mic jack it only has combo XLR and 14 connector jacks x2 also the text printed on some of the menu buttons lacks contrast because it is printed in gray ink on black plastic while other buttons are printed in white ink on black which has good contrast. The grey text is very hard to see in a dark room. But those are minor complaints. Everything else too numerous to mention is great. Buy it.

This is one of those pieces of gear that you need to determine what youre going to use it for. I bought it for a client of mine to record voice tracks. The pluses are that the microphones sound great and they are included. The price is also very attractive as Tascam has newer, improved models. There is no power adapter included, so you will be relying on batteries. I think a power adapter should have been included. You can buy one as an addedprice accessory. The recorder is not that difficult to use, but it is an older style that relies on menus. The graphics on the screen are very basic and look like theyre from another digital era. Think MSDOS.You can use an inexpensive tripod for a mic stand if you dont want to spend the big bucks for a more professional set up. This works fine.My biggest gripe is these mics are extremely easy to pop If you are within 12 inches of them. If you are recording voice tracks using the builtin microphones, you will have to get some sort of a pop filter. I bought one that Auray makes. It does the job but thats a few extra dollars that you have to add on. You can avoid that if you have an external mic or mics that have an XLR or quarter inch connector. Its nice to have that option.Since my client is not an audio engineer, this recorder has an absolutely invaluable feature. It will record a duplicate of the original recording at a lower input level. That way you are more likely to have a track that is not over modulated. I love this feature and hats off to Tascam for including it.as noted earlier, you must have a good idea of what youre going to use this recorder for before you buy it because it may not fit your needs. It is a four track recorder, but if I were doing music recording that was in any way complicated, I would not like to try to deal with the layers of menus. You might be a whiz at it, but Im not.

I just put this thing in the middle of the room, without really taking anything into account, to record our practice and was really surprised by what we got out of it. The condenser mics on this thing picked up every little nuance from every instrument. I just imported the files to USB on my PC and there it was easy to use with great results. shibbyd –
A million miles from the digital dictaphones I have been used to. All in all, this is a superb stereo recorder. Capable of recording broadcast quality WAV files, perform simple overdub and mixdown operations. It also features an easy to use instrument tuner. The internal mics suffer a little noise, but much less than I was expecting. I strongly suggest purchasing a wind jammer with this unit, as it is very susceptible to the slightest breeze when using the internal mic array unshielded. The phantom power works great and powers my condenser microphone without a problem. Coupled with a good external microphone Rode M3, there is no perceptible noise at all. The unit also features a 40hz and 80hz low pass filter that is quite effective at cutting low frequency rumblings like traffic. Worthy of a separate mention is that if you use the unit on batteries, and power an external condenser mic using the phantom power, a fresh set of alkaline batteries will only give you about 2 hours. This is compared to 17 hours using the internal array. I am very happy with this unit. It easily covers all of my recording needs. I am more than happy to recommend this recorder.

Having owned the larger DR60, this was what the doctor ordered. The other unit while very capable, this unit takes it all and puts it into a smaller, compact package with the same feature set. You need to take a few minutes to go through it, and get the settings right, then your ready for field work. I had to think twice about the onboard mics, but I am glad that I went ahead with it. They need to be set up correctly, or you wind up setting the dB input level incorrectly. Otherwise, what I wanted, and it delivers.

The recording quality is absolutely incredible. I have a Zoom H4n, and its honestly not as good as this Tascam. I would recommend this over and over again.
cff39 –
After years of using struggling to see the microscopic screen on a Zoom H4, the Tascam DR40 is a joy. The user interface is clean and intuitive. The display is easily readable. The most useful feature is the 4 track mode where it records two stereo tracks, one pair is an adjustable number of dB below the other so in case you are busy performing while recording and do not notice clipping on a loud passage, you have another track recorded at a lower level which hopefully will be clean. I recommend recording at 24 bit sample size in this mode so you do not loose any resolution which becomes distortion in a soft passage.
The Bearded Guy –
This Tascam DR40 Handheld 4Track recorder is amazing for recording rehearsals, speeches, lectures, small venue events, etc. The SD card takes up to a 32GB card which will allow tons of time recording given the quality you are recording at. Awesome recordings while on the go. Built in microphones sound great, but you can use any microphone you like. You can plug in directly with a standard XLR cable. Phantom power is built in. Record up to four tracks and store them on the included 2 GB SD card.

One problem I found with this mic it would not record sound to camera unless there is a memory card in the mic itself. WhyI wasted quite a bit of time thinking the mic was defective because I initially did not purchase a microSD card for it as I only wanted to record sound directly to camera.

I bought Tascam recorder and it took a little while to learn how to use it. I am still learning some of its features, placement of unit for best recording results, etc., but have been successful in recording many songs. However I had to create a wind screen cap to put over the mics so breeze from air conditioner would not be audible on recordings.

I am very familiar with TASCAM products since my days in recording studios, radio stations, and television production studios. TASCAM was the ubiquitous recording device in every studio. So, when I needed a quality, portable digital recorder for band rehearsals and jams, TASCAM was the goto brand for me. The DR40 proves to be a reliable and versatile digital recorder for my purposes.I use the Dual REC Mode, which records tracks 1 2 at the volume I set, and records tracks 3 4 at 6db or 12db down. Some devices have a fairly deep menu tree however the DR40 does not and has 4 dedicated keys that take you directly to key settings and controls without the annoying drill down. Other key features 2 48v Phantom Power XLR inputs 2 14 phone inputs Any 5V USB power supply with a micro USB connector at one end will power it, that is if you dont want to use the 3 AAA batteries Cons Battery indicator only has 3 bars and the specs indicate 20 hours of recording power without Phantom power. But after the first hour under battery power, the meter steps down one bar. At that rate you would expect the battery to drain after 3 hours. But it does last. Im just not sure how long because I always use a USB power adapter. The meter should have been designed to be switchable from bars to a percentage readout. A word about TEquipment…Customer support is exceptional. I had a problem with the shipping method so I called customer support twice and each time they were genuinely concerned and helpful and quickly resolved the issue to my immediate satisfaction. I will continue to order from them.

There are so many ways I use this little guy, where do I begin Whether Im capturing a live performance, or a full band rehearsal, the built in compressors make sure Im getting good sound no matter the volume. I can record a bandmates idea to a click, play guitar on it later, and literally mix a rough demo of a new song. I can record my rhythm guitar player playing the chords of a song, and play it back infinitely while I work out the solo. The list goes on and on. A great little instrument for a novice to semipro videographer looking to improve his or her audio recordings. There is a newer model available from Tascam, but the DR40 still does the trick Keep in mind it has no 3.5mm inputs, nor does this older model record via USB, so youll need to commit to gear using XLR balanced inputs or 14 jacks. I also purchased the DSLR video accessory package that Tascam has for the DR40. Also, a great investment.

No dislikes. Small and not hard to use. Tripod mountable. Can have right by Mike stand. Mono or stereo recording. Each track or auto mix 4 tracks.
luggsie –
Audio performance is excellent, very low noise several dB more sensitive than my bare ears if youre not actually handling it, and it has a flat frequency response giving good HiFi results with the internal mics at both bass and top ends for music. Good battery life when using internal mics but they wont last long when its powering 48v capacitor mics so an external PSU input is then needed. For recording movies, in conjunction with a video camera, the time stamp on the files should allow sync to 1 second. Camera time stamps are usually less precise so clapper boards are still useful.
