I needed a replacement for my aging Marantz XLR phantom power recorder, which is great but ducks down batteries. This Tascam is totally sorted and does everything you could wish for. Construction is fully plastic, and Hoorah – it’s sturdy but light and a pleasure to use. Some people like the heavier, metal Zoom units – they’re very nice but frankly I’m lugging enough kit about as it is. Menu interface initially looks scary but if you’re even remotely used to audio kit it is very intuitive. Easy to use, audio files on system mics is very good. My first use was on a punishing industrial project with very high volume engineering audio (effectively jet engine levels). Perfect results; so impressed. 5 people found this helpful

As I start to film weddings, I knew that I needed to upgrade the audio quality. I needed a device that could record the audio for the speeches and ceremony from the sound board. For me it was between this and the Zoom H4N. One of the best features I’ve found is the safety track with the dual recording. There is nothing worse than finding that the audio you recorded has peaked and isn’t useable. This way it records a second track at a lower volume and can save you. Another great feature is the fact you can record up to four tracks. This device allows you to record using XLR and Line inputs. This is really useful at weddings when you don’t know what output the DJ is going to have for you. Something that is reassuring but not something I’ll need is the fact you can use up to a 128GB SD card. This allows you to record so much audio without the need of deleting it from the card. Overall, this is a device which has been very useful and works great. The fact that all of this is available for a good price is great. There are a couple of things that could be improved including the build quality and there can be a little noise heard. Yet, all in all, I’ve been really happy with this and would recommend it to others. 13 people found this helpful

The Tascam is capable of high quality recordings either via the internal condenser microphones or via the TRS line inputs connected directly from a mixing desk. It is really easy to start recording high quality audio straight out of the box and the more complex features can be learned as you go along. When connected to a mixing desk you can record multiple mixed inputs directly to the Tascam. The Tascam is capable of producing CD quality audio and is great value for money. Recommended. out of 5 stars Verified Purchase TASCAM DR40X review Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 February 2024 Style Name: DR-40X Very good recorder, lots of recording options, slightly cheaper build but very good. Zero complaints. Screen is a little “oldschool” but gets you rou d easily enough. One person found this helpful

I used this to record DJ sets using the line ins, and also recording a piano using a couple of small condenser mics with the phantom power. I noticed another DJ with a different portable recorder having some difficulty recording from the mixer because his recorder (I think the Tascam DR20) didn’t have a control for the input level, whereas this one does. One thing to bear in mind is that although it will record to 4 channels, it uses the internal mics in addition to the 2 external channels. You can’t connect 4 external mics or use the 3.5mm line in at the same time as the combi jacks. You will also get 2 x stereo files which you will need to sync up afterwards. So it’s best to think of this as a very high quality stereo recorder rather than a 4 channel device. The internal mics are very good – I’ve used this to record audio outside with great results and although I took some good quality external mics with me, I ended up just using the internal mics as the quality was superb. Make sure you get the furry windscreen muff thing to go over the mics if you’re planning on recording outside; to reduce windnoise. You can also do M/S decoding if you have a couple of decent extermal mics. 13 people found this helpful

I’m really happy with this recorder as it does everything I need plus lots more. I’ve been using recording equipment since the 1960s up to professional equipment level. When I think back to humping around Revox open reel tape machines and all the usual ancillary gear that went with them then using this is a breeze! I’ve had an Edirol RO9 since 2007 which has never put a foot wrong and still delivers perfectly but the OLED display screen is quite small. I did buy a Tascam DR05 a few years ago which has also been excellent. However, I wanted a machine which had a larger screen, as one gets older it’s so much easier to see what is going on when the screen is a tad bigger. I also wanted a recorder with quarter inch jack sockets and the Tascam DR40X fulfills all those requirements. I use wav and MP3 settings on some files and find the quality is excellent for my usage which is piano, keyboards etc. Indeed musical instruments with a big dynamic range. Obviously the sound quality does begin to suffer when using low bitrates as all digital recorders do. However in wav or high bit rates it is fabulous. All in all, I really like this unit, for what I use it for it is well designed and built. Highly recommended! 7 people found this helpful

Is a great product and sounds awesome. Very easy to use and has a straight-forward operation. My only negatives would include – it doesn’t include an SD card, and won’t record without one, so there will be an immediate additional cost. This might seem like a funny one but the microphones are very sensitive; if you hold it in your hand, the microphones will pick up ANY little movement your hand makes – if you’re in record mode and press a button, the click will also be picked up – I think a holder of some kind would solve the problem, so that’s another thing to consider. Other than those things, is it a great recorder and I highly recommend it. 6 people found this helpful

November 2024 Style Name: DR-40X Just started using this (or any) Audio Recorder, quite a lot to adjust for a good recording, still learning its best settings for music. Can do more adjustments than some other units I looked at online. Well built and good display size to see and use.
