I rented both the tamron 1728 and the Sony 1635 gm and found that the Tamron approached or equaled the IQ of the GM lens. I figured that for the 1200 savings between these two I could get the new Sony 35mm GM and have far better IQ than the 1635 could provide and come out a a touch better on cost. This is a great lens, Im really impressed with what Tamron did with this.

I will not recommend it for Small space Real State photos but for anything else is an excellent lens, fast autofocus, and very quiet.I wish Tamron could make a wider version. Delivered quality at an affordable price.

I love this lens, Im really happy I made this purchase. It works perfectly for what I need it for, and then some. Highly recommend

Just shot identical setting shots on tripod with os off at 24mm with the Tamron and a Sony 1635 f4. Both had the same sharpness and contrast. The Tamron is lighter and can open to 2.8 if needed for selective focus. Definitely a keeper.

Nice size and weight. Focuses well. Good fit. Good range for interior shots.

If you have a Sony E mount and want a good scenery vacation lens the 17mm wide is great this might be the one for you. Sure the 28mm might be limiting youll be using alot of foot zooms, but with a fast .2.8 aperture and at this price, it is hard to beat. There are just a few niggles you should know up front before you buy.1 It is plastic fantastic. If you are an old time Canon EF lens user, this wont be anything new. But being plastic fantastic also means its nice and lightweight. As long as you can deal with the cheapish finger feel, this is not a big issue.2 No image stabilization built in. Sure, the Sony camera bodies have IS built in, but the more the better.3 And last but not least the Tamron style zoom focus ring. If youve used Tamron before, you know about the zoom and focus ring locations.

Was testing this lens with a friends Sonys g master lens and the results honestly looks identical. Saved a lot of money with the Tamron and delivery package was secured. Also came earlier than expected

We recently travelled to Europe and I brought this lens along with its companion the 2875mm f2.8. The 1728 stayed on the majority of the time, allowing me to capture some awesome wide shots I am very happy with. Tack sharp in the center and hold up very well in the corners. Some vignetting as expected but easily corrected. Simply an amazing lens considering its . I also use this lens now for video work and its perfect for my Feiyutech gimbal small and light.

This lens is razor sharp from edge to edge. The internal zoom feature is smooth. The auto focus rendering is fast. From someone that shoots on a Sony Mirrorless system with all Gmaster lenses, I felt like I was betraying my brand by giving this lens a shot. Zero regret and at a much more palatable price point. This will now be my go to landscape weapon of choice.

This is a really versatile wide angle zoom with excellent image quality. Its light weight and fairly compact size means, for me, that its on my camera quite often. And with those characteristics, works very well on a gimbal. The zoom and focus rings are reversed from the usual, but Ive finally remembered that when using the lens. The other bonus is that price is right. And, again, Ive been very pleased with the image, across the range.

Thank you Tamron for making a high quality lens without the high price that goes with it This is a very well built, sturdy lens. I have this one and the 2875mm and I am impressed with both of them

I have been using this lens exclusively in the few weeks since I bought it, and the results are exciting and inspiring. Great contrast, details, and gradations…I dont think I will change to any other lens for a few more months…just so much fun

I love this lens the 17mm is for sure wide enough for real estate, and landscape shots. This lens lives on my camera now. Its so lite or portable, I just love it. Works great for Photo and Video. That f2.8 is just awesome Would purchase again for sure. If I could only have 1 Sony lens this would be it.

This is my new favorite lens I currently own the Tamron 2875mm lens and I love that one so much Its a great overall lens. The 1728mm is perfect for landscape and Astrophotography. I was having to do a lot of panoramic shot with the 2875 because I go into the high country and 28 just isnt wide enough. 17mm is the perfect angle and havent had the need to do a panoramic yet. Its extremely light and compact and has very minimal distortion and vignetting. If I had to pick one lens for landscape and astro, this is it You definitely will not regret this purchase and I cant wait to keep seeing what it can do The photos I uploaded have not been cropped and have had no vignette or distortion corrections done.Just buy it already

I like it a lot so far.Lens is lightweight but gives good feeling. Plastic seems to be the good quality one. Image is relatively sharp. I use it mostly with higher aperture values so I dont really know how it feels wide open. I am only concerned about dust that might be getting inside of the lens. I installed UV filter so it might help.

Had this for a few weeks. Its a great lens with great image quality and it can get pretty wide. If youre familiar with the Tamron 2875, this is basically exactly on par with that in terms of build quality, optical performance, ergonomics etc. Its small and light and feels great on my a7iii. I like what Tamron are doing. Smaller, cheaper lenses that sacrifice in focal range rather than image quality. Its a great wide angle option. I will say that 1728 is a reduced range compared to a 1635 and its not an insignificant difference. But this lens was never aiming to be a 1635 in the first place. This lens delivers exactly what it promises and in that regard it is absolutely fantastic.

    JUSTIN

The lens is a lot cheaper than competing lenses and with the zoom capability, makes it a great lens to use with a Gimbal. Its a no brained not to get this lens if you already own the Tamron 2875mm

Coming from the 1635 Zeiss F4 sony lens, this is a breath of fresh air. Footage and images are noticeably sharper, especially towards the edges of the frame. Theres a little bit of distortion to correct, but only noticeable in shots with straight lines. The close focus is amazing as I can get right in there for interesting perspectives, with decent DOF separation at 2.8. Amazingly, this lens is almost as sharp at 2.8 as it is at 5.6. I dont really see a loss in quality till diffraction kicks in at about F11 or F13. 4k footage is sharp sharp sharp Best of all, paired with the 2875, I have most useful focal lengths that I want for gimbal shots covered, with lenses that are so close in weight I barely have to rebalance the lense after changing it with the camera mounted to the gimbal.Nightlow light footage at 2.8 is very usable without having to dip below ISO 3200 now which is about the limit for usability on the sony sensor. Excellent lens

I just received the lens today I am excited to take it out on a full photo shoot soon, but by just testing her out for the past few hours it feels, looks and works great. The build feels solid. The lens is not heavy at all, probably the same weight as a kit lens for the A7ii.Ive attached a few unedited shots of my dog to get a feel for just how wide the shots are. It is great to be so near to your subject and get so much more coverage in a shot.Everything in the shot is sharp and with the fast focusing the lens is a real joy.

Recently purchased this lens for my Sony A7II mirrorless camera. Wanted a wide angle lens for landscape photography. So far pictures have been very sharp. I dont miss the extra mm on the wide side. Wish it would go to 35mm, but you cant beat this lens for the price, which is about half the price of the Sony 1635mm GM lens. I would recommend this lens.

When I was shopping for lenses, it was between this lens and the sigma 1424. I researched the lenses exhaustively. The sigma is slightly better optically and build quality wise. The Tamron was lighter and cheaper. However, the thing that sealed it for me was Sigmas filter system.Due to the protruding front lens on the Sigma, it is not compatible with my polar pro NDs. In order to integrate the Sigma into my lineup, I would either need to get rear mount drop in NDs, or use some kind of a matte box setup up front.None of that fit my style. I wanted one set of lenses with one set of NDs for all of them, and I didnt want the drastic weight increase of a filter holder the sigma. So, I went with the Tamron, and I LOVE it.Great lens, meets all my needs. The optical quality is fine for what Im doing on my A7SIII, and I put the money I saved into other gear. Im 100 satisfied with my choice.

I previously bought the tamron 28 75 2.8 about a year ago. Ive been using for photos and video since. I was just hoping for the same quality and expectations i have with the 28 to 75. And this lens delivers on that. All the great reviews for the 28 to 75 can be said for the 17 to 28.

Been using this lens for real estate and some full body portraits. I already had the 2875 and loved that one so much that Ive been waiting for them to make a wider zoom. This killed it. Images are nice and crisp plus the silent motor makes it awesome for my video work. Highly recommend

This lens delivers great image quality and its a great pair for my A6500, provides good flexibility to go from 25mm to 42mm FF equivalent at a 2.8 aperture. Will be switching to a FF Sony camera in the future so this is a perfect investment.

This lens was incredibly light and still decently wide at 17mm. Its autofocus was very quick but its design felt cheap. There are no function buttons to customize commands and the body of the lens scratched very easily. After using the Sigma 1424 I was a little let down with this lens because it lacked the Sigmas sharpness. The 1635GM was also sharper. Tamron makes decent, cheap alternatives, but once youve been spoiled by sharper glass its hard to go back. I decided to stick to wide angle primes and now use the Sony 20mm 1.8 G, which has now become one of my favorites.

The Tamron has been a joy to shoot with and its been fun finding all that can fit into frame now. Size, weight, and price are superb. For walking around town I like pairing the Tamron with the Sony 85mm f1.8 for ultimate lightness and portability. For special events, Ill always grab the Sony 2470mm GM for its great image quality. Is the Tamron better than the 2870mm kit lens Yes.Is this the best everyday lens if the 2470 GM is out of the question If you dont need the wide focal length and dont want to lens correct in post, the Sony 28mm f2.0 works better. Otherwise, yes, this lens is great.Sony 2470 GM Honestly, this lens is amazing and if you dont already have it and hesitant because of the price but looking to buy the Tamron brand new, spend less on the Sony 28mm f2.0 or the 85mm f1.8 to hold you off in the meantime and save up to get the 2470 GM used. Its that good.

This lens is amazing The optics are really good and the size and weight are another plus. So a little bit about my foray in to the Tamron lenses.Ive had Tamron from my film days and purchased them from BH from when they were still on the corner of 17th st somewhere on the west side. yes that was a while ago. When I switched to Sony I got the 2470 GM and its a wonderful piece of glass. When Tamron announced the 2875 I got it and in my opinion the same quality as the 2470GM but still have both since I got 2 cameras and dont feel like switching. The tamrom 2875 weight is light compared to the GM. The 1728 weight compared to the 1635 GM is light as well. The optical quality is even dare I say when compared to the 1635 GM but for less than half the price. Now you know why its always sold out The lens feels like its weather sealed as you feel a bit of rubber on the mount. The focus and zoom rings are smooth and easy to turn. You will need to correct the images in an editor because of a slight distortion but wide lenses suffer from this a bit and this one doesnt show as much as some others like the 18mm Batis. This lens plus the 2875 is a great travel kit Get it

This lens is VERY sharp, light and relatively inexpensive. However, When shooting closeups of subjects with straight horizontal lines, make sure your camera is perfectly level. If not, the complex Mustache distortion is very high. Hopefully Adobe makes the profile available sooner rather than later.

This lens suits the Sony bodies perfectly being both relatively small and lightweight, with great picture quality. It might not have all the bells and whistles of the Sony gm lens but the weight and cost saving are far more important to me

Great Wide Angle Lens. Extremely sharp, image quality is great. Great for video work as well, having a constant 2.8 aperture works really well in low light with my Sony A7III. Lens build quality is good and it is light weight making it easy to use on gimbals. In my opinion this is the best money for value wide angle lens for Sony full frame cameras.

This lens is a must buy for a Sony user I use it in conjunction with my Sony 2470 and 70200 and I cannot tell the difference between them. I love how sharp this lens is. The auto focus is great for photo and video. I can imagine it being a great companion to the Tamron 2875.

although a small super wideangle zoom with F2.8 aperture The Tamron 1728 is very sharp. The focusing if fast in both AFS and AFC sony A7riv. The lens is extremely light but, the hood does create a small amount of additional vignetting. When the hood is in its stored position the zoom ring is slightly more difficult to reach. The Zoom ring is backward FYI meaning it takes some time getting used to clockwise movement to zooming in.Highly reccomended

Just my opinion and YMMV The Tamron trinity is not meant to compete directly with the Sony or Sigma. Its intended to be a very good, very light, very small, travel friendly kit and I love it for that.It is sharp. It has good, but not amazing, rendering.Focusing is fast and accurate A7iii17mm just isnt super wide, but its mostly enough for vacation photographs.SonyTamron replaced my Nikon trinity kit for travel. Was the Nikon, at nearly twice the price, size, AND weight, better Yes.Do I regret switching Absolutely not.

The Tamron 1728 has a bit of goodwill with me because of how well the 2875 has treated me obviously its not as good as the 2470GM, but costing just a little over 13 the price, its hard to complain, even with the vignetting, lesser build quality, and lack of focus hold button not a deal breaker, I remapped all the buttons on my a7iii anyway. However, the 1728mms wide end… leaves me wanting a tad bit more… i was looking at the laowa 1018, which from a focal range standpoint, fits in pretty perfectly with what I currently own, but 10mm at the wide end is overkill 1214 at the widest end would be ideal, i also wish the lens could open up a bit more and have a fixed aperture, which makes the sony 1224 seem like a good choice more on this lens later.Since its an ultra wide lens Im looking for, im not going to demand an f2.8, if they even make ultra wides with that large an aperture, but a constant aperture would be nice at f4. This makes me look at sonys 1224 f4, but its twice the price of the tamron, and on the long end only goes to 24, leaving a gap in my kit from 2428 i guess thats just nitpicking, but personally, Id rather have a little overlap than have gaps..Theres also a Sigma 1424 f2.8, which seems like a great compromise on paper. Pricewise, it sits between the sony and the tamron. It has a 14mm wide end, which I think will be good enough to get me to stop wingeing I briefly owned the 1635 f4, and it didnt feel wide enough maybe I got a bad copy of it, but it just looked… soft. I took photos all over my home, from the smallest of hallways to the living roomdining room. So if a 16mm isnt wide enough, then a 17mm obviously wont be either. I dont shoot ultra wide often, but Ive had friends ask me if I could take photos for them when they put out ads to sublet their homes, or find a roommate, or sell. and on occasion, I might want to capture an image with a look thats more unique than the photos i typically shoot. Ideally, Id just want my wide angle zoom to be wide enough for me to have some fun once in a while, without having to buy a dedicated ultra wide.Maybe the Samyang 14mm F2.8 AF Wide Angle, Full Frame Auto Focus Lens for Sony E Mount would suffice itll give me the 14mm that the sigma has, while maintaining the 28 long end… and its relatively inexpensive…. but i dont know if I trust Samyang lenses. Or I could wait for Tamron to unveil their 70200 equivalent and the 3 primes that they teased, although theres no word yet as to what prime lenses theyll be. Fingers crossed for a nice 14mm f2.8 prime

Lens appears well built. Nice light design, much lighter than Sony GM. Focusing speed is slower than expected, with some hunting. Lens is sharp, which is what prompted the purchase, as was the marked difference between this lens and the Sony GMaster.I will be keeping the lens, and also have the wide angle zoom. I am waiting for the Tamron telephoto zoom to compliment the two lenses I have.

Using the Sony 24105 I have become used to exact sharpness. This Tamrom 1728 is really sharp. Light and compact and priced perfectly with the sale at 799. I read tons of reviews, watched at least 5 youtubes on this lens and am happy I bought it. Highly recommend. Did I mention it is extremely sharp I use it on a Sony a7rIV and truly enjoy this lens.

I purchased this lens to cover my wife end. I started with the Tamron 2875 and was blown away. This lens performs just as well and maintains the amazing sharpness and colors as the 2875. I hope Tamron comes out with a telephoto zoom so I can replace my Sony 70200 f4.

Very pleased with this lens. The light weight allows for ease of carry all day long, and this lens is very sharp. It is actually the only nonsony brand lens that I own, and because of this lens, I am considering adding the 701802.8 as a companion with this lens and the 551.8za 352.8za for a lightweight travel kit.

This lens is an amazing wideangle lens for someone on a budget, especially if youre into vlogging etc. and are also planning to get the Tamron 2875 F2.8 lens. They make an excellent pair, both with high quality construction. This one has internal zoom which is worth mentioning.

Image quality is good, but not as good as the reviews I read. Intended functionally works, but wish it had stabilization. My biggest issue is lack of labeling on the lens and its more difficult to attach to the camera dont know why. I use it for night and Real Estate photography.

Well built, solid, and pricey.Lives up to the reputation Tamron built on the back of the 28 75 e mount.I wish it was a stabilized lens for video purposes only. Really just as good as the sony 16 35.

Its the only small UWA zoom with excellent quality, what else can you ask for Yes, if it went from 16mm to 35mm then it would be too heavy big. Tamron is going the small size route for us travelers. Thank you, Tamron

This compliments the Tamron 2875mm very well and now I use the duo for travel due to their small size. You cant get another f2.8 in that similar focal range for that relative small size. Very sharp Tamron has done it again. I hope they make small f1.8 primes someday

ProsRelatively inexpensive compared to rivalsInternal focusingPlastic body doesnt feel plastickySmall enough front element to accommodate standard 67mm filtersConsAt the upper end of a wideangle zoom in terms of a focal length sub15mm would be a dreamPlastic bodyAs of this writing midAugust 2019, hard to findLike the Sony 135mm, I couldnt wait for BH stock unfortunately and got it elsewhere. Aside from that, once I got it, it was quite entertaining to use. Its a small lens, even with the lens hood, and the internal focusing keeps it from expanding. The focal length is at the upper end of the wide angle spectrum 14mm would have been perfect, but design sacrifices have to be made to hit the price point and I think thats a win. Compare this to the Sigma 1424mm I had the Canon EF version, which is 500 more but feels more robust and goes even wider, or the Sony GM 1635mm, which has high sharpness and a price to match. If youre looking for best value the Tamron would be my pick.

I have been using this lens as my primary travel lens on my Sony A7iii for the past couple of weeks and I am extremely impressed by the cornertocorner sharpness, even at 17mm. At 2.8, it allows me to capture wide landscape shots in lowlight without having to bump up the ISO. While the zoom range is rather narrow, I think it will be the perfect companion to the Tamron 2870 which I plan on purchasing in the near future after seeing how this lens has performed so far.Pros lightweight decent weathersealing fast focus with the A7iii 2.8 aperture is great for astro photographyCons zoom ring and focus ring are flipped compared to other lenses which takes a while to get used to no builtin stabilizationOverall fantastic lens for the price

Over the years, my photography style has gone wider and wider. The Batis 25mm had slowly become my weapon of choice as a prime shooter. I admire the 25s characteristics because of the Zeiss colors, the minimum focusing distance, the sharpness, the flexibility of being an all around walkable lens, and the ability to balance on my gimbals light weight. The only problem I had is it just wasnt wide enough for all situations. Married on the A7R3, the 1728mm sounded like a lens after my heart and wallet. It seemed to have most of the qualities I love about my but provided me more versatility with the bottom 17mm and a bit more reach on the top 28mm. I made the decision to leave all my other lenses at home on a weekend trip to Atlanta and I was extremely satisfied with the results I carried the kit all day using a wrist strap or my gimbal weebil without the slightest bit of fatigue. I was able to get some ultra wide shots that would have been a bit tougher but not impossible in most cases with the Batis. I did a comparison and scientifically measured by foot 9 pace difference between 25 and 17, which could be crucial. The close focusing was on marginally better than the but you have to be careful because its wide of course. The distortion is there, but easily managed in camera and post. The follow focus and zoom feature on the gimbal just worked so much better than zoom by foot. Focus and zoom ring operate very smooth. This is my first zoom in about 4 years and I didnt think I missed the versatility, but it does make a difference. The A7R allows for me to do extreme crops, which is part of my style, so 17 is a welcome FL. If youre looking for an sharp, light weight, snappy, wide lens, at an excellent price look no further. OH…how could I forget. It has internal zoom, so the length doesnt increase making gimbal work more difficult. I do love that feature. Best lens Ive purchased in years

I just got mine yesterday and have carried it with me all day. EVERYTHING the initial reviews says is true its fast, sharp and super light.I appreciate that Tamron created a lens that is an ideal mate to a compact mirrorless camera. Ive rented Sonys 1635mm f2.8 and absolutely adore shooting with it, but its a monster lens. Unless Im on a job with the sole purpose of shooting, its just too much to lug around. This lens, on the other hand, balances very well on my Sony A7iii I could easily walk about all day with it. It is incredibly light and nimble, but the build quality feels solid. I think Tamrons minimal typography, softtouch plastics, and rounded plastic edges all combine to make a very sleek, modern piece of equipment.Only gripes I wish it came with a lens case. And the reverse placement of the focus and zoom rings is a little annoying. But I have no problem being limited to only 28mm on the long end if thats what keeps this lens so compact besides, I like 28mm for street almost as much as 35mm anyway.Bravo Tamron My new favorite lens.

Focus is quick and sharp and I am happy with the lens. Due to the wider aperture of this lens I used it more than the Sony lens that came with my Sony A7iii camera. The front end of this lens does not take the normal 55mm filter mount.

Just got the lens, but so far Im very impressed at the sharpness and easy of use. Not having a AFMF button hasnt been a problem since its easy to switch in the Sony body. I migrated from the Olympus world, so I appreciate small, lightweight and sharp lenses.

I am so impressed with the combination of this lens being lightweight and crisp, beautiful images AND having a macro. It isnt promoted as that but what a nice surprise. Thai is my first Tamron purchase and Im now going to be adding the Tamron 2875 to my bag based on the quality of this lens. It works great on the MOZA Aircross 2 with my Sony a7iii.

This is the best wide angle on the market Especially for its price and weight I love using this lens for video, but mostly for photography. Im a sucker for wide angle portraits and its a 1, 2 punch combo with my tamron 2875mm f2.8. Definitely recommend this lens

I have found this lens to be very sharp, and to work well with Sony autofocus. As with any lens this wide, there is some distortion and foreshortening. That is still something I am learning to deal with, but that is inherent in any lens this wide. Overall, I have been very happy with this lenss performance so far, and it has allowed me to get real estate shots that were just not possible before.

I preordered this lens without hesitation. I had been using the 2875 for several months. This Tamron 1728mm is sharp and light and I am beginning to like this even better. The autofocus works great for my Sony A7III and A7RIII. I usually mount it on my Zhiyun Crane 3 Lab and sometimes even add my hot shoe mount Tascam stereo mic. It balances with ease and I am even able to zoom in and out without rebalancing the gimbal. I find it probably a bit sharper than the 2875mm. I primarily use it for wedding videos and it handles the reception low light quite well. I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a light lens that performs very well.

This lens has a very good build quality. Its compact and light enough to take traveling and on adventures. Ive never used Tamron glass before but I can say it is super nice. Corners are sharp and little to no aberration. I bought this lens maily for astrophotography and it perfoms just as good as I hoped it would. A big upgrade from my Rokinon glass. Very happy to have purchased this lens, while saving some money compared to buying the 1635 sony lens.

I shot portraits of my daughters with Sony a7Riii and Tamron 1728mm at f2.8, which I never normally do with a widelens I was standing less than 6 feet away from them, no flash, just natural light. I was surprised how little distortion there was in the image. the lens is very sharp, very light, and very compact. highly recommended

Man I love this lens I usually use my Rokinon 14mm 2.8 for real estate work, and I was unsure about losing that wider field, especially small rooms and small baths, but in most cases the 1728mm works just fine. The lens is incredibly sharp and the overall weight is amazing. Had the 2875 already and am quite happy with it, but the 1728mm has just blown me away Did 4 house shoots and and afternoon at the lake shooting landscapes with it and its now my favorite lens of all time I shoot everything in manual focus so I cant speak to the autofocus but Ive been told its great as well. Cant wait for the 75210mm that might be coming out soon. Then my life will be complete. A little off topic but Ive been playing around with the Lens Baby Twist 60 and getting some very cool artistic shots for my real estate work and my clients are loving them interspersed with the others.

I bought this in pair with the Song a7c as a lightweight blogging lens. The image performance is just as good as Sonys G Master lenses while cheaper in price. Its also very light compared to other zoom lens which makes it easier for vlogging and run and gun shooting.

Just received this 1728 f2.8 Tamron lens for my Sony a7rviii. I am impressed by the speed, and light weight. Most impressive is the sharpness of the images. I have become a fan of Tamron lenses lately both for my sony and my Nikon d500. Somehow Tamron has figured out how to put very good quality in affordable and light weight lenses.

This is a great lens that rivals the 1635GM Sony lens at a fraction of the price. Plus it has a closer focusing range that allows for some pretty awesome wide angle, almost macro photography. It does have a little bit of distortion at the edges when shooting at 17mm, but that is pretty easy to fix in post and should continue to get better when adobe releases the lens correction profile.

Its not meant to compare directly with the GM counterpart, its just not as versatile. The 24287075 is essentially just as versatile as each other, but 16g172835, your loosing to much. Weather proofing also not the same, which is my personal con.Lens itself, for the zoom range offeredcovered, it is an exceptional lens at a great price. Sharp, light, and average to above average auto focus speeds. And at 2.8, your really getting more than you pay for. Distortion and vignette extremely minimal and only on the long end, and easily corrected. Flaring and chromatics are very good. Absolute excellent match for the 2875, and for many a perfect match for the upcoming telephoto.Personal thoughts. I love this lens, and have no regrets buying it. I will be selling it though, but not because this lens is bad, but because this lens is so good. I shoot two cameras two lenses, and swap out only seldom and when needed. This combo was the 2875 and 70200 2.8. After getting and using this lens, my load out is this 1728 and 70200. Which is the reason for selling this lens. The 2835mm reach along with apsc mode I feel during events would lead to less lens swaps or cropping. Also, 1 camera 1 lens grab and go, used to be 28g75 which sometimes isnt wide enough, but the 28mm isnt long enough. Also, as mentioned above, the weather sealing, this lens zooms internally like the inner barrel moves but inward, only time can tell but I feel during landscape and adverse weather and dust, its better to just go with the GM. Price difference, along with the 70200gm, is steep but worth it in my eyes and my case. But the 2875, VS 2470, I cannot justify the GM. Video and gimbal work the 1728 is great, but I still find the 24mm GM with its 1.4 to be the better solution, for me.Again, cant argue this lens is great, and without it I never wouldve realized how beneficial the GM equivalent would be for me.

I already have the 2875mm Tamron F2.8, and if you do and are very happy with it, you will be just as happy with this 1728mm f2.8. Nice clear images, mostly use it on a Sony A7II autofocuses really fast, and if you are a video shooter, this lens does not extend like the 2875mm. I tried this with a Sony a7RII with the 42MP and still loved the images important as I am considering a Sony ARIII and dont really want to have to buy all GM glass. I have never wished I had 16 instead of 18, but sometimes wished I had bigger than 28, then I remember to look in the bag to grab the 2875 I am also looking forward to the 70180mm f2.8 release coming out early next year.

Just got the lens and first impressions are very good. I bought this lens without doing any research, based on my experience with the 2875. This one will not disappoint it is light, sharp, and fast. Autofocus is nearly instantaneous on Sony A7 M3 and supports Eye Animal Eye AF. The fixed barrel makes it perfect for gimbal and video. It mounts nicely on the Weebill lab and balances with lens hood and focus motor attached. The Weebill lab app controls focus and tracking with this lens. This will be used on a very regular basis for video and street photos. Some people complain about the range, but thats not an issue if you have the tampon 2875. IMO, the images are slightly better than the Tamron 2875. The dog sample image used animal eye AF.

This was one of the first lenses I bought after switching from Fuji to Sony. I cant really find anything about the lens that I dont care for. For the price, build quality and optical quality are both excellent. I dont need optical stabilization, IBIS is enough and the tradeoffs in weight arent worth it to me. Sharpness is great, colors and contrast are great, and so far Im not missing the extra 1mm on the wide end that the competition has. Very happy with this purchase.

This lens is perfect for two reasons 1. Best for the budget conscious Landscape photographer. Dont get me wrong Sonys lenses are great too but more expensive. 2. Tack sharp corner to corner, and useful for those starting out in photography . After some years they can easily upgrade to other lenses and still use this one as their go to lens.

Bought this lens a few weeks ago, have used it twice for milky way and star trails. Thought the 17mm wouldnt be wide enough compared to a 14mm, but it really isnt much of a difference at all. Lens is sharp, have had no problems focusing and i just highly recommend this lens. For the price and quality, you cant beat it.

I purchased this with the Tamron 2875mm f2.8 for my Sony a7S III and love how compact and sharp the lens is. Even though its plastic is still has a premium feel to it. It also works incredibly well when I have used either lenses on the a7S III on an RS2. Every little bit I can shave off while using the setup as a whole goes a long way.

When I dont have any particular photographic adventures to go on, I often walk through town and shoot buildings, churches, etc. For a while, I was using a 50mm, which is a 75mm on my camera. Not ideal for wide shots, but I didnt really like my kit lens. I finally purchased this, and after a handful of uses, Im satisfied with the results. On a crop body, this lens is 25.542mm, which makes it a pretty decent walk around lens. Its bigger and heavier than my other lenses, but that was expected since its a full frame. Manual focus ring is smooth. Zooms in and out easily as well. Its sharp throughout the zoom range and I havent noticed any particularly soft edges or anything like that. I suppose itll be a more specialized Lens when I graduate to a fullframe camera, but for the crop sensor it can do a bit of everything.

Very happy with this lens. Images are nice and sharp, and the lens is reasonably small and light compared to the competition. The unusual backward zoom and flipped focus ring takes a little getting used to, but dont otherwise negatively affect the performance of this lens. Great buy

This is a superb lens. It performs well throughout the zoom range providing sharp, well rendered pictures. The color rendition is excellent. The lens is light and balances well on the Sony a7 and a6xxx series cameras. Although the lens body is made of,plastic, it feels substantial and the zoom and focus mechanisms work smoothly. I am very happy with this purchase, and with BH service.

I have owned the Tamron 2875 for about 6 months now and by a long shot, it is my most used lens. I can do just about any shoot that comes my way with that lense alone. But when I heard a 1728 was in the works I was quick to opt away from purchasing the 1635 F4 Sony lens because for less than the price of it, I could get my hands on this 2.8 ultrawide instead. Yes, you lose out on 8mm of reach but with sonys APSC mode and clear image zoom, I wasnt worried and being that I have the 2875 too to pick up right where this one lets off, I have to say this lens is as close to perfect as it gets at this price point. It is sharp, well built and tiny. It even uses the same filter size as its bigger brother. In all this lens is optically and ergonomically great especially if you area already used to the reversed placement of the focus and zoom rings, it pairs amazing with the 2875 and for the price, nothing else compares if you want a high quality, fast, ultrawide with great optics and a good price. I cannot wait for the third lens to this trilogy

So far, I really like this lens. However, one caveat There is a lot of complex distortion if the lens is not leveled, especially when photographing items with straight horizontal or vertical lines buildings etc. Hopefully, Adobe adds the profile for this lens sooner rather than later.

I had reservations about this lens. Nevertheless I preordered it based on the experience with the Tamron 2875 f2.8 Di III RXD lens I have been using for almost a year now, which has not let me down yet. My concerns were about the image quality and the relatively short zoom range. After I got the lens and used for about two weeks, comparing it against side by side the Sony FE 1635 f2.8, I can tell you that the image quality is excellent and there are only a very few situations I can actually tell the difference between the Tamron and the Sony 1535mm, and thats if I am pixelpeeping. Its very compact and lightweight, which is a huge bonus. It has the same diameter as the 2875mm counterpart, so I dont have to get a new set of filters or step updown rings, I can use the filters I already own.On the flip side, I do find the range a bit restrictive on the long end. For example, I can mount the FE 1635mm and leave the house for a day of occasional streeturban shooting, and 35mm would be fine. But I cant say the same thing for 28mm. That said, this is my personal view based on my shooting style, and has nothing to do with the lens quality itself. If you want an affordable wide angle zoom for your Sony FE mount, this is it. Even if youre not using full frame, I this should make an excellent 2542mm lens on APSC cameras, as well.At this price point, in my opinion, Tamron 1728mm f2.8 lens is hard to beat.

With COVID19 my daughters dance recital was not able to be held at the local civic center. Parents and family were not able to attend. To let the girls still perform we decided to have the performance at the local studio, but the studio was very small. I could not video with my Sony a7iii and Tamron 2870 f2.8. I took a chance and added the 1728 f2.8 to my bag and boy did it deliver. I had very difficult angles and very poor lighting conditions and this lens somehow made this bad situation work and work well. I now have nice clean video to share with all the parents to see the hard work of their kids. Thanks Tamron for expanding your Sony offering and for producing such a high quality lens at a reasonable price.

This lens has very high image quality, at a relatively low sizeweightcost. My only regret, is that I did not purchase this lens a year agoThe image quality and versatility exceeded my already high expectations. While reviewing my first batch of photos taken with this lens, I realized I had a big grin on my face. I heard myself say out loud oh yeah.Ive owned a few lenses I did not like, I own some lenses I like, and I own just a few lenses I love. This is one I love.Indoor photos of buildings, indoor photos of large groups of people with mediocre lighting, outdoor photos of building and landscape They all exceeded my expectations for image quality. F2.8 was very good, F4 to F8 was great. I have not tried F8 yet.Did I absolutely NEED this lens it is debatable and a matter of perspective no pun intended. Did I want this lens the day it started collecting good reviews Absolutely. Am I happy with this lens now that I have tried it YES No regrets.Alternatives I considered1 14mm or 16mm prime full frame lens. I decided 14mm was too wide for most of my needs, and 17mm this lens was good enough. On very rare occasions where I want wider than 17mm, I can pan the camera and take 2 photos then stitch them together with editing software. I wanted the flexibility of an ultrawide zoom that gave me the option of getting to 35mm equivalent field of view by cropping when I edit the photo files.2 Other nonSony ultra wide zoom lenses. This lens is better bang for the buck, better image quality, and smallerlighterlower cost.3 Sony native G or GM ultra wide angle zoom. F2.8 options are much largerheavier and more expensive than this lens, with only marginal improvement in image quality for most use cases. This is the 3rd lens in my kit, and I use my 2470 and 70200 lenses more often, so I was not looking for another largeheavy1000 lens.My use caseI sometimes take indoor photos of a large group of people and cant get enough distance to fit everyone in with a 24mm full frame field of view, and need brighter than F4 to avoid excessive ISO noise.I sometimes take photos inside of buildings and cant fit everything in the shot with a 24mm full frame field of view.I sometime want an ultra wide angle shot to capture the setting of an event, to compliment the rest of my photos which range from 24mm to 200mm.In the past, I would take multiple sets of 3 or 4 photos while panning my camera and hoping that at least one set could be successfully stitched together in editing software. This is a real challenge when there are people moving around or the lighting is uneven.

The 1728mm brings a focal range that I desperately needed and the static 2.8 through the range aperture means I can isolate my subject at any focal length. Sharpest at around f4 from edge to edge no issues with fringing or coma and minimal distortion that is easily fixed in post. I will admit that Lightroom has yet to produce a lens profile for this one, but I am sure its on its way. Tamron has thrown down the gauntlet going toe to toe with the g master series. If youve used the Tamron 2875mm youll know exactly what to expect from this lens. Its super small and lightweight and the internal zoom makes it perfect for gimbals. From what Ive seen it also seems super sharp. The autofocus on A7 iii in video mode seems to be hunting a bit more than the 2875mm. I feel like Tamron will fix that in a firmware update though. The photo was taken at 17mm f 2.8
