The price was right, I brought thee one for canon put it on my 80d and man the photos were crisp clear detail was really nice. Glad I purchased it I think you will too

The Tamron 100400 lens is really nice. The auto focus is very fast and accurate with very little hunting. The images are very crisp. The depth of field is great. So far Ive used the lens for wildlife, portraits, architecture, etc and cannot complain. Watched many reviews comparing Tamron with the other major names and opted to go with Tamron and have zero regrets.

In photographing birds, I was initially very disappointed with the sharpness of photos, especially after Id read the glowing reviews. So I did some tripod focus testing at 300mm vs. my Canon L 70300mm lens. Sure enough, the Tamron lens was consistently blurred when compared with my existing lens. I then contacted the folks at Tamron, providing the test shots. They said the lens was front focusing. So I sent the lens back to them to adjustcalibrate. They also requested my camera Canon 7D Mark 2 be sent. I must report that the returned lens is now taking super sharp photos. However, this was a bad experience to go through. Maybe the TAPin console they sell would have fixed a problem like that, but Id expect excellent quality for typical cases birds at 400mm right off the shelf. Im giving 4 stars for the final quality outcome, but Id give 2 or 3 for the purchasegetting it to work experience.

I have a Canon 70 300 USM which gives fantastic results, but I just wanted that extra bit of reach for wildlife. So, what to buy After many hours scouring the web I decided against the 150 600mm Sigma and Tamron lens as I thought they would just be too large to cope with for a long period of time, and although reviews have said that you can get good handheld results, I didnt think this would suit me.I had to discount Canon lenses due to budget, although was a little tempted by some used ones on the Wex site. It came down to the Sigma 100 400mm or Tamron 100 400mm. Both very similar in performance according to many reviewers, but the Tamron came out slightly ahead. It doesnt come with a tripod mount, you have to buy that as an extra but that doesnt bother me at the momentAnyway, so far I have had excellent results with this new lens, really pleased with it. Its possible to tweak some of the functions if you use the Tamron Tap In unit, which again is an additional cost. Ive not done this. I use it on a Canon 80D

After 4 years of shooting birds with a Canon 5D Mark III and a Canon prime lens, 400mm f5.6, I was shopping for a lens with image stability and closer focusing. The obvious choice was the new Canon 100400mm lens with IS II and minimum focusing of 3.2 feet. After reading some reviews of the Tamron 100400, I took a chance and ordered it from BH on April 17 and started shooting with it on April 18. After approximately 400 shots, I can say with confidence thet the image quality is better than the results I was getting with my 400mm prime and I think the ISVC may have something to do with it and I can focus at less than 5 feet about 12 feet for the Canon 400mm prime.The Tamron weighs much less than the Canon100400mm, comes with a 6 year warranty vs one year for the Canon and it is significantly less expensive.In conclusion I am very happy with my purchase.

So far so good. Did need a tripod mount to get the best images thus far. Im working on my handholding techniques to improve the sharpness. On tripod it works fine at all focal lengths and at the settings I use. Solid build. Still reviewing but happy right now.

I had the Sigma before I bought the Tamron and was never 100 happy with it. The main attraction for me to the Tamron was the weather resistance, 9 seals compared to the Sigmas 1 seal. Comparing the two side by side for IQ, I found them to be about the same with a very small edge to the Tamron. The Tamron has better focus and better ISOSVC. I use the Tamron 100400 on both my 7DII and M5. The Sigma back focused on the M5 with no way to correct it One extra kicker for the Tamron was it works with TCs and the Sigma does not.

Hi,This is my observations based on a few months of using the Tamron 100400 and was compared to other lenses that I have owned or still use for taking pictures of wildlife.I use this lens on a crop sensor body as a lightweight option for walking around and capturing wildlife.The lens is quite easily hand held for long periods, if you wish to use the lens on a monotripod a lens mount will need to be purchased separately, as it is not included.I have found the results from this lens to be impressive and was able to crop an image down almost near to 11 in Lightroom and still have a usable image see images.The VR is good, but not quite as good as the VR on the Nikon AFS 200500mm f5.6E ED VR.I brought the TAP in lens dock in anticipation that the lens would need to be calibrated for front or back focus settings, but have not found it necessary to adjust at all. The lens works really well on minimum focus distance through to infinity straight out of the box Unlike Tamrons main competitor of third party lenses, which I have found to be a frustrating and time consuming process to set up.

I had this lens for a couple of weeks while deciding whether or not to keep it. The good Build quality is excellent and solid. Its slightly longer but a bit lighter in weight and has a bit better balance than its nearest competitor the Sigma. The zoom ring turns to the right for Nikon shooters, the VC seems excellent through the viewfinder. I got some very nice photos with it…sharp, good color, good clarity.The problem and why I returned the lens was a repeated inconsistency with maintaining focus. I purchased the lens to shoot wildlife, which does tend to move sometimes. And for flying birds, which are moving constantly. Unacceptably often, this lens seemed to be tracking and focusing just fine, but then it would lose it and and I couldnt get it back again, and the shot opportunity was lost. When I downloaded the photos, there were a LOT of out of focus images. Not just a little bit fuzzy…completely out of focus I havent experienced this with any other lens I own, even my little Nikkor 70300 hasnt done this. I was using a Nikon D7500, which is no slouch with tracking, either.The reviewers all raved about the superior AF and VC capability of this lens, and it was said to be better than its Sigma counterpart. Well, I also had the Sigma at the same time, and I disagree with this assessment, at least with the two copies I had. I got many more excellent keepers with the Sigma, noticeably fewer with the Tamron, really no bad ones with Sigma, many bad and unusable ones with the Tamron. To give credit where its due, the Tamron did really well with stationary subjects, and it seemed sharp throughout the range and didnt appear to need adjusting with the dock. I really wanted to like this lens, but despite getting many excellent stationary subject images that I really liked a lot, there were just too many bad ones, most particularly with moving subjects and flying birds.So disappointingly, this lens didnt work for me and I returned it. It was hard to decide whether to give the lens 3 or 4 stars. When its good, its good, so tha deserves at least 4 stars. But when its bad, its out of focus too much and I dont think it performed acceptably in that regard, so thats 2 or 3 stars. Because I had the Sigma on hand to compare results in identical shooting scenarios, the differences between the two became quickly apparent, and overall, the Sigma outperformed the Tamron in all the ways that count for me.Note The Tamron does have an optional tripod collar, but I would never have bought it for this lens…not needed as it is easily hand held and I think the collar would be in the way.

Sharp as a needle, relatively lightweight, beautifully constructed with good weather sealing. I find the AF fast and responsive in most situations other than real low light. The image stabilization works extremely well and I have been able to shoot 400mm at 130th of a second and get perfectly sharp pics.Ive owned the comparable Sigma, which I must say is also a very sharp lensI have some great photos taken with it, but the Tamron has better weather sealing, something that is important to me. It also accommodates a tripod collar for those times when a tripod is necessary, whereas the Sigma has to rely on a kind of mickeymouse collar to fit where it doesnt really go. I do not recommend the overpriced Tamron collarit should come with it a better and much cheaper choice is the HAOGE LMRTL140 LENS COLLAR FOR TAMRON 100400mm for about 50.I highly recommend the Tamron 100400mm.

I was on the fence between the Tamron and the Nikon 200500 and decided the extra 100mm of reach and double the cost wasnt going to convince me to go large…the Nikon would require me to purchase another case as well. Images are very crisp, and viewfinder still bright at 400mm. DOF is still about zero wide open at 300400mm focusing in the 1020 range so the f6.3 is somewhat welcome. For portraiture, the compression is fantastic No focusing issues until dusk or later..then the AF begins to hunt .

I had the Sigma 150600 before i got this one. Although i miss the extra reach with the Tamron, it is so much easier to use. I actually keep it on my 6D for most of the time since the 100mm gives me true 100mm FF, which is close enough on the short end. The 400mm long end works great for me for Bird shots etc. The weight and length of it is perfect, easy to carry and store in your bag.

I only tested the lens wide open at 400 mm, since I will use it as such most. The center and corners were nice and sharp, the left and right edges were a little soft. I had to micro adjust the AF, lens was much softer prior to adjustment. It will be a good lens when I dont want to carry the Tamron 150600 mm..

I use this lens on a 5D4 a 1D4 and M6 this is a cracking lens for the money, focusing is fast and accurate and it all comes in a package that is around 13rd lighter than the canon equivalent and less than 12 price. So if the Canon is better it really ought to be, but this one will do for me.

Bought this lens to add another dimension to bird watching. Have taken it on several bird walks and have been very pleased with the results. Have used it several times to take shots of birds that we can not quite identify with binoculars. Zooming in on a picture has made identification possible on several occasions. And some of the shots have been real keepers. Easy to use. Capable of taking great great pictures without a tripod.Yes, I would recommend this lens to anyone interested in nature photography.

I bought this lens for my Nikon d 7500 to use for birds and to supplement my Nikon 70300 mm lens. The first couple of times I took it out I had very few keepers. I tested the lens for front and back focusing but the focus was right on. Then things improved and I began to get much better clarity and sharpness on sitting birds. Im not sure what I did to make such a difference except that I increased the Aperture a half stop and attached a pistol grip to the tripod collar and Ive since gotten some very excellent shots. As for flying birds, the keeper rate has not improved much and I think that might be the downfall of this lens. I still need to work with it to know if it is me or the lens.For the good news I had some concerns about the weight of the lens but it is hand holdable and well balanced. The lens appears to be well constructed. It is weather resistant. And it has excellent bokeh. It zooms well and has a zoom lock. As long as there is adequate contrast it focuses quickly. In dim lighting it hunts for focus. There is a tripod collar available and it is well constructed and fits nicely. I would highly recommend buying it. I also bought the TapIn Console but havent used it yet.Most lenses have compromises. This one is no exception. This is not a cheap lens by any means when you add in the extras you will have spent nearly 1000.00.The only way to really tell if it is right for you is to order this lens and try it for yourself. Most of the other buyers gave this lens a 5 star rating. The lens and I got off to a bad start so I downgraded it but I will go back and adjust if things continue to improve. For Nikon users there really arent many choices in this focal length and price range.

So far so good First of all, delivery was amazingly fast From coast to coast in about 30 hours. I just tried the lens inside my house, i did some sample tests and it seems extremely sharp Mostly at 100 and 300. Focusing even in little light was perfect, also outside at night and handheld vc is awesome Now i just have to wait for the tripod collar to be in stock. I cant hardly wait to use it in daylight

Many have commented on this lens as good but short of excellent at 400mm wide open. I found this lens to be excellent, with great EQ even at 400mm wide open. Once I fine tuned the focus with the Tapin console, it produced images on a par with my Nikkor 200500mm, at a fraction of the weight and size.

Was concern about stop action at soccer games for my grandson but on a cloudy day at 400mm the pictures were clear and color wasnt as good as it would have been on a sunny day. Bottom line pictures were in focus. Tap and UV filter were included which made it a great price. Also tried a Tamron 1.4x telecoverter and it worked great.

I was just shocked, in a good way, how sharp this lens is It is sharper than any of mt Nikon FX and DX variable aperture zoom lenses. Compared to these zooms there is very little focus breathing and the VR is excellent. The lens is quite compact for this zoom range and has good ergonomics. The half stop loss from F6.3 compared to F5.6 at 400mm has cut the bulk and weight down considerably. With modern cameras the higher isos are so good that this half stop difference is marginal. I noticed that some reviewers have complained of lack of sharpness and this is due to having a bad copy unfortunately. This would make an excellent sports and wildlife lens except in dim light where the huge fast glass take over.

Initially used Nikkor 200500mm f5.6 wNikon D500 D7100. D500 focus locktracking and IQ for BIF were superb wNikkor but combo was HEAVY.Switched to Tamron 100400mm much lighter, very good daylight performance. AF performance and thus keeper rate slightly diminished relative to Nikkor zoom, but I accepted the tradeoff. With D500, 37 of 153 AF points are rated for f6.3, with D7100 only 1 of 51 AF points all AF points work at f5.6.

I first considered the Nikkor 200500mm ED VR lens. That lens is a beast, twice the weight and a lot more money for only imperceptible quality difference. After exhaustive research I am so happy with my final purchase of the Tamron. I purchased it to go on Safari in South Africa and used it extensively there for two weeks. I also took several thousand photos before that at the Air Show and several other venues. The lens preformed flawlessly in every aspect, sharpness, clarity, color rendition and focusing. I was able to acquire and get the shot without the lens hunting for focus. The build quality on the lens is quite good with some weather sealing. This a more than worthy performer to the much more expensive Nikkor and you will be very happy with the results you get. The pictures attached were taken with the Nikon D7500 which gave me some additional reach because of the crop sensor.

Given its relatively modest price point, this lens yields an unexpected combination of exceptional image sharpness at all focal lengths as well as classleading vibration compensation. Its also surprisingly good as a nearmacro lens, rendering equivalent sharpness at its closest focal point. Color rendition is somewhat cool with a tinge of green, but this is easily rectified in post.

Great build quality a lot smaller than the Canon lens I am used to. Performance is good not that I have managed to use it much as I have only had it two weeks. The quality of the photos is very good across full zoom range with only a very slight drop of around the edges at 400 mm. Lighter and smaller than my old Canon lens which made a difference carrying it around on a shoot in the hot climate of Cyprus. Just about small enough to be used hand held which is just as well as there is no tripod mount.I have since tried to use it with my Canon 1.4 converter and it just will not work. You will have to buy the Tamron converter which is 500 CHF which is 200CHF more that the Canon and not as good. When you add on the cost of a tripod mount as well 167CHF this is not such a good buy.

Build and optical quality is better than the price would indicate. It is small and lightweight with impressive sharpness and contrast through most of the zoom range and apertures. However, I returned the lens to Adorama because the sharpness and contrast were noticeably lower at 400mm. Unlike other reviewers that saw the softer edges and corners at 400mm, I found the center, edges, and corners to be softer at 400mm. The lens appeared to be well centered with all corners looking the same. The IQ was not good enough at 400mm and I would use 400mm most of the time for wildlife shots. The stabilizer and focus worked well. I want to be able to print large in the quest for that special shot so I do pixel peep.

Wanted a lens for shooting Blue Angels air show with my Canon 80D. I first tried the Tamron 18400 which was a big disappointment, could not get sharp pictures at all chromatic aberration was terrible. Thank goodness for BH return policy, it was returned I replaced it with the 100400. What a difference Pictures for the most part are sharp with just a little vignetting. Keeper rate of air show photos was higher than I have had with any of my other lenses. The lens is also fairly light easy to handle. Very pleased with this lens.

I love this lens. The image quality is outstanding. Both attached picture were taken from 3000 ft away. The first I had to crop it quite a bit to get the file size down to 5mb, so it is probably zoomed to more than 11. The second pic is almost uncropped. A good friend is jealous that he spend 2k for his Canon L 100400.Vignetting is noticeable when wide open and Adobe has not included a lens profile to deal with that yet. But, I used the profile for their G2 150600 and that worked ok with some manual tweaking.Build quality is top notch. You wont be disappointed.I only wish it had a tripod mount included. But hey, for 800 I wont complain.Buy it

As an amateur, and being on a budget, I decided to take a chance on this lens, and use it, for the first time, at an airshow along with my Canon 5d mk IV. I really got some nice shots although like any self critic, I need more practice. The lens performed well. Focus was fast. The only criticism I have is that the zoom ring was very stiff. I suspect that this will change with more use. I would recommend this lens for anyone who is retired and on a budget. It takes nice images, but it takes practice with the image stabilization. I like the lens, but it can sometimes put you too close to the action.

I wanted the new Canon 100400L mark 2, but really couldnt justify the expense, so I decided to take a chance on the new Tamron equivalent, With some trepidation, I must admit But I neednt have worried. It feels and looks like a quality item, and at all focal lengths the image quality is well up to my late lamented Canon 100400L mark 1. The Vibration Control seems to be very effective and I was able to take a handheld picture at 400mm indoors in poor light using 120th of a second, that was acceptably sharp even at 100. The Vibration Control has two settings, 2 for panning and 1 for everything else. Unlike the Canon lens, where setting 2 coped with both panning and static shots, it seems that the Tamrons VC needs to be changed every time you move from panning to a static shot. This is something of a problem for me, because so far Ive forgotten to change the VC setting more often than not. Im hoping that it is be something to do with a learning curve in the handling of the lens, but time will tell. Fringing CA isnt an issue and is certainly and to my mind, incredibly much better than my Canon 70300L lens. I havent noticed a problem with flare, and I havent noticed any distortion at any focal length that has been worth correcting. The zoom ring turns anticlockwise i.e. the Nikon way but I didnt find that to be a problem even though I wasnt used to it, and for some reason I actually prefer it that way. It is a big lens, and fairly heavy, but much less so than the Canon equivalent. This makes a big difference to my back, and is something I appreciate a lot. Being a black lens means that it doesnt stand out in a crowd unlike most L lenses. You may like that I do but you may not… The Tamron does not have a tripod ring, and you will have to pay another 110 or so to buy one. There isnt a thirdparty version available yet, but I suppose one will become available in due course. The slight difference in aperture maximum aperture f6.3 compared the Canons f5.6 is not an issue for me, and I cant see it making much difference to anyone. However the Canon keeps to f4.5 for a lot longer than the Tamron before stopping down. Again, not an issue for me at all I just thought Id mention it. To sum up, if you can afford the Canon lens all that extra money must result in a much better quality product. If you want pretty much the same image quality without spending an extra 1000, buy the Tamron. I dont think youll regret it.

Has a Sigma 150500, but is more pleased with this Tamton. Very good auto focus and sharp images. Live in Thailand and was a bit unlucky and had to pay customs and VAT. Cost me 2700 TB extra. But a reasonable objective as well.

It wont autofocus the full range. Youll need to get close and then it will lock on. That being said, Ive had almost zero frontback issue problems. If I focus on an eye, that eyes been in focus.Obviously its not a bright lens, but works great for outdoor shooting, and has shown great bokeh.

It seems that everything is going to be good. It is smooth to tele in and out and stays put when Im pointing the lens down. Focusing in auto is very good for the price. Havent tried the lens out on flying birds yet so I dont know how well it stays on target with moving objects. Put the lens on the tripod mount and focused on a stationary object and at 400 mm. I found it to front focus a little. Might need to buy the adjustment kit to fine tune the camera and lens. Ill use the 300 to 400 range the most so Ill want to fine tune this part. Overall I like this lens and will use it a lot.

Lens is very nice. It takes very sharp pictures even at dusk. Only critique is the auto focus is noticably slower on this lens vs. my canon lens. That is almost neglegable, though. So far a great purchase.

This is a very difficult lens to review for a few reasons. Optically, and for the price this lens is an insane value, but the QC in manufacturing has been very inconsistent in my experience. I am on my third copy of the Lens from Adorama.The first version had decentered optics leading to smudging and ghosting in the upper left quadrant of the frame in addition to not focusing at 400mm, so I exchanged it with Adorama, whose customer service praiseworthy.The second copy had centered optics, but wouldnt focus at 400mm until stopped down to f11 even after tweeking with the TAPin console. I dont mean the images were soft, I mean they were out of focus. I exchanged it one more time.The third copy still has some ghosting at 400mm wide open at f6.3, but when I use Tamrons TAPin console, I can get it tack sharp at f8. And that is the secret to this lens. At 100300mm focus was decent out of the box, but when I dial it in with the TAPin console it is actually amazing for the money.I shot it side by side with my canon 70200 is markii and the Tamrons image quality is better at some focal lengths between 100 and 200mm. In my opinion, Tamron should have tuned this lens to focus at 300400mm over the 100200mm range. I bought it for the reach, as Im sure most people would.Overall, Id say the image quality is totally comparable between the Tamron at 700 and the Canon, which was a 2500 lens when I bought it. The canon has a little more contrast, and obviously has a 2.8 constant aperture, but in good light, its difficult to tell them apart.The Tamron isnt the fastest lens in the world, but it has fantastic image stabilization. In good light or with a tripod you can get a third party collar for pretty cheap, this lens is an unbeatable value in my opinion. The build quality is solid as well with weather sealing and a gasket at the mount.So, if your patient and willing to exchange copies if necessary more of a hassle than some people would want Im sure, and you use the Tamron TAPin console which is easy and intuitive but time consuming this lens has amazing potential.

Fantastic lens with sharp photos

I am a bird photographer and was frustrated trying to shoot with my kit 55300.I shopped hard and was focused on the Nikon AFS 80400 or the Nikon 200500. The first was too costly and the second too cumbersome to shoot handheld.I read positive reviews on the Tamron and decided to give it a try. I am pleased with my choice so far as I am still experimenting what the lens can do. AF is fast and generally accurate. Colors are true, particularly with the use of a polarizer when shots are near water.I purchased the optional docking station but have not used it yet as shots are in focus at various ranges.Images appear sharp even when blown up.Colors are good when I

Ive had this lens a couple of weeks now and have been putting it through its paces for landscape, wildlife and portraiture work. I went through the calibration process using the optional TapIn Console but it didnt really need much adjustment for use on my Nikon D850 and didnt need any big adjustments at any focal length or focusing distance. The biggest adjustments were around 4 and only at the closest focusing distance, I didnt need any adjustments at all for the long distance settings and the resulting images are very sharp with no discernible front or back focusing issues.This lens is sharp, a good size for travel or to carry in the kit as a mid range telephoto zoom. It focuses fast and accurately and the image stabilization works nicely. I bought it to carry in the field as a mid range zoom when Im shooting wildlife primarily with longer lenses Nikon 600mm f4 or 500mm PF or think Ill need a telephoto zoom for landscape isolation work. Years ago I had Nikons 200400mm f4 AFS zoom lens and this kind of focal length flexibility can be very useful in certain situations and allows great composition flexibility in the field but its hard to carry two super telephotos so a lens like this Tamron 100400mm is a great way to have some zoom flexibility at hand while working with other large lenses.The Tamron 100400mm also has a very close minimum focusing distance and Ive been testing it out as a backyard birding lens and it does a great job for small birds in the yard and would even work nicely for pseudo macro work like Butterflies, Frogs and the like.I did purchase the optional tripod collar with integrated Arca Swiss foot which is very useful during lens testing and may be useful in the field for some uses though I expect Ill mostly hand hold this lens. At the 100mm zoom level this lens is small enough to hang off the cameras lens mount but its long enough at the 400mm zoom Id be hesitant to put that much leverage on the cameras lens mount and of course it balances better on a tripod head when mounted on the lens foot instead of the camera.All in all Im very happy with this lens and think its a tremendous value and a bit of a sleeper lens at this price point. Its a huge step up from the 70300mm Nikon lens I carried around for similar uses both in terms of AF speed, image sharpness and of course the extra 100mm of focal length which is huge.

Ive take some outstanding photographs of small and large birds since purchasing the lens ducks, herons, bluebirds, siskins, etc. Im very happy with it. The only downside is the weight, but I knew what it weighed when I purchased it.

Now that Ive owned this lens over 6 mos, I thought I would submit my impressions. Before I purchased, I rented this lens, and the Sigma 100400. I understand that there could be some quality variance. But one thing I noticed right away was the difference in auto focus and vibration control. I got way more shots in focus with the Tamron than the Sigma. So I went ahead and purchased the Tamron. I have not been disappointed. I bought the tripod foot also and I shoot about 5050 hand held and on a monopod. Ive read many reviews where they said the Sigma was sharper at 400 etc, etc. But that really doesnt matter if you miss the shot all together due slower focus tracking or vr. I have been using this on a D7200 and this setup is fairly light and easy to carry all day.

I have had great results with this 100400mm lens. Considering what it cost compared to the 80400mm Nikon lens it is outstanding and much sharper than the original Nikon lens. I really like the fact that it doesnt weigh a lot and I can hand hold it and receive beautiful images at 130th second with the vibration control turned on. Nikon should create a lens of this caliber.

Found the lens to be tack sharp with my Canon 6D Mark ll. The lightness was also a nice factor. You see I own a Canon 100400mm L lens, which I also love. But if this lens had come out sooner I would have saved about 1100., no small amount of change. The results of the Tamron were impressive and the value is incomparable.

I think this messed up my canon 7d mark ii. My camera is less than 6 months old. Its a wonderful camera. After I put this lens on it and used it for a day the LCD screen went haywire. 34 is blacked out and lots of red lines on the rest. Im sending this back. Only buying canon from now on.

When this lens was announced I was immediately interested as a good alternative for a bit longer focal length. I use it mainly for landscape and some wildlife shooting. Ive used the Nikon 200500 and found it to be too cumbersome for my purposes. This lens is a good value for me, it is well built, it focuses quickly is sharp and is relatively light weight.

As a nature photographer, I have been looking forward to getting this lens. On paper it looks great Unfortunately, in the field, not so good. I was looking for a lighter version of my 150600mm Tamron lens, a lens that I love, but is a lot to carry. This lens offers a high tech design with three low dispersion elements, silent drive autofocus, VC stabilization and dust and moisture resistance. It sounded great, the problem is that simply isnt sharp. Unless you enjoy fuzzy images, I recommend that you dont buy this lens.

First impressions of the lens on a D5500 feels very sturdy and wellmade. Its not hard to handhold at 2.5 pounds but heavier than prior lenses I own. I have taken just a few shots with it so far and I am really enjoying it. As someone relatively newer to photography, this is a great telephoto lens without breaking the bank. My prior zoom was a Nikon 55200mm VR. This shot is straight from the camera no postprocessing. I havent used it enough yet to give it 5 stars.

Tamron is on a role. It keeps on pulling out sharo lens after sharp lens out of its magic hat. On the Canon 5D4, it focuses very quickly with little hunting, and the results are very satisfying. Priceperformance wise, it is the best.

I am really impressed with this lens. When it nails the focus it is really incredible in how sharp and contrasty the images are on my 5DM3 and still quite good on my 70d. It loses a star really it should only be half a star lost because I had to buy the tapin console to get it to work that way. Built in camera AFMA just wasnt good enough to get it to nail the focus consistently throughout the zoom range and especially at 400mm where I use this lens the most.I really dont appreciate that Tamron shipped a lens where it has wildly varied requirements for AFMA. I ended up having to adjust by as much as 11 points It is surely an issue with the lens because the adjustments were consistently within 12 afma points between the two cameras. This might not be such an issue, but the lens has no tolerance for missing focus. Some lenses even fast primes Ive used are more forgiving than this one is not.With that gripe aside, the lens is otherwise fantastic. Autofocus is fast and consistent. The VC on it is great. It is solidly built and best of all its not an awful attentiondrawing white colorI would recommend this lens to enthusiasts, but with the condition that you really need the tapin console to make it shine.

Very sharp indeed…. I did not have to do any adjustments for my D850. It feels good and a great price for a lens I dont use so often. It does get fairly long once its on 400mm but that is to be expected also the sunshade came of a few times so watch that. I was amazed how sharp my handheld shots at 400 mm were shutter speed 1750 All in all great value for the money

With moving objects like a kid bike could only get less than 50 shots in focus on my Z7. On very distant objects like high flying planes could not get AF locked at all.

After reading reviews, its seems this Tamron has some optical IQ advantages over the Sigma version. But then if youre into BIF Birds In Flight the autofocus speedcompetence, the Tamron 100400mm shines clearly above the Sigma 100400mm…For me it started a bit traumatically, in the BIF department. Boys and girls, this is where the rubber meets the road. And so pardon this bit of digression into when to VC and when to and when not to VC Vibration Compensation. I went to where the Sandhill Cranes are wintering over here in south central New Mexico and clicked off 300400 of these beautiful birds in good range. My day went real sour when I found that roughly 85 of my RAW files where unsharp…I was shooting at F8, 13000th. Thats right, and getting soft images. Fortunately I knew that VC Vibration Compensation can be a problem. Yes, at high shutter speeds, VC is actually a problem. At shutter speeds roughly below 11000th VC is very effective, but somewhere over 12000th the image captured freeze the VC gyrations, VC, IS, VR works by magically giggling some of the lens elements. Result, a telltale doublelooking blurred image.I went back two days latter, knowing Mr operator, yours truly, had messed up. With VC turned off and at 1300th f9.5 check out the included image of the Sandhill Crane. The scenic shot is with VC on and was taken at 1750th, f8.Yes this lens rocks, if you can hold it. And speaking of holding It Im a monopod and waiststaff holster kind of guy, for me the available tripod collar was an absolute plus. And the fact that this lens fills a FF sensor as does the Sigma is utter sweetness. At just over two pounds I can walk the canyons with a very capable tele in my days kit, and sacrifice concerning imaging capability.

This lens works well for half the price of its Canon equivalent. Maybe it could be micro adjusted to be a little sharper, but its sharp enough that I dont notice any major problems with the images. It feels well built and it is the lens on my camera the most since I purchased it, so it cant be too bad

I hve been shooting Canon lenses on my Sony a6300 and A7rII with the Metabones IV converter for some time now . I would stack this Tamron100400 lens up against my Canon glass and it is as sharp or sharper ..I have been waiting for a small quality compact 100 400 to come along to complete my a6300 kit . This lens is very good and together with my Sony 35mm , Sigma 19mm and Sigma 60mm I now have a complete extremely high quality sharp system that is lite and fits into a 12 wide X8inch high X 7inch deep solder bag . I am an aspiring bird photographer. A long time film and then point and shoot photographer, I resolved to get serious about birds a year ago and purchased a Nikon 7200 and two kit lenses. I struggled with one of them a 55300 trying to shoot birds. Its slow focusing and soft images made it obvious I needed to upgrade.I focused on the latest Nikon 80400 because of its versatility but in the end its high price and mediocre reviews made me consider other alternatives.I selected the Tamaron and am pleased with the choice.I am at the walking around and shooting everything point but so far more than good. Images are sharp I have the optional dock but see no need for it at present and colors true. Autofocusing is silent and fast. I am looking forward to a serious birding trip because I know the lens wont let me down.The lens isnt perfect. The sunshade is flimsy. I cant see the images very well in the viewfinder old eyes and am using live view more frequently. The lens overexposes compared to my other lenses and I am shooting minus one f stop. These are easy workarounds.I am particularly pleased that the lens is such a bargain that there was enough money left in the budget for a tripod, point and shoot camera, backpack camera bag, lens support foot, remote release and other accessories with money left over.

I have not kept or been pleased with Tamron lenses outside of the SP series and so ordered this lens with reservations. I carefully unwrapped the packaging expecting I would be returning the lens. What attracted me was the focal length 100400 well suited for birding , hiking or any application needing a long lens in a small package. In the first few days I did 75100 test shots with VC off, on tripod, selftimer on a Nikon 800E. I was surprised at the sharpness for a nonSP lens. It is soft at 400, but back off to 350370mm and you gain a lot of clarity. The auto focus seemed to be good out of the box. I checked it with the TAPin software and made 1 very minor change. Next was shooting handheld with VC engaged. Thats when I decided to keep the lens Surprising results for handholding at 300mm It is light in weight to the point of needing to pay attention when taking off my tripod. I have also done some shooting with my Nikon D500 and found the lens makes the transition to a cropped sensor very well. An effective 150600mm in a package this small and well stabilized is a welcome addition to my bag. Glad I purchased the tripod collar pricey, but a wellmade and welcome accessory.

I purchased this lens because I needed a little more reach than the 70200 I already had. I primarily use it for taking pictures at my kids baseball games. They are always playing outdoors and there is plenty of light so it being f6.3 at 400mm is not a problem for me. Shooting indoors might be more of an issue. So far, the pictures have been decently sharp and focus has been fast and accurate. The build quality seems very good. Its not too heavy to handhold with good light. For the price, I am very happy with this lens. Spending more than twice as much for the Canon 100400 was not really an option for me because of the limited amount of situations Ill need it. Overall, Im happy with it and would recommend it to someone that is not trying to spend a ton on a telephoto.

Very happy with lens, although I havent used it very much as yet. Easy to use, great image quality. Had to buy a tapin console to update the firmware so that autofocus would work with my Z50 should be able to use it in future for calibration and any further updates. Registered with Tamron for a 5 year warranty.

I received the lens from BH very timely as usual. The lens is has great build quality. It seems like a lot of lens when its attached to the camera body, but after handling it a bit is quite comfortable. The lens tripod mounting ring was not in stock so Im waiting for that so I can shoot some pictures from the tripod.I havent had a much of an opportunity to get out with the lens because off the cold, overcast windy weather we have been having. However I did get an opportunity to take a few pictures recently and can say Im very pleased with the lens.Focusing seems quite adequate for stationary objects. I havent photographed any birds or moving objects with it so far. I did do some macro photographs with it and it did quite well. However, I am not able to hold the camera still enough to get excellent pictures that I know the lens is be capable of. I would have included one but there is a limit of 2 pictures per review.I have included pictures from the lens mounted on a Canon 5D MKIII in automatic mode and hand held. The photos are jpg straight from the camera except for resizing so they could be uploaded. Both Pictures were taken at 400mm f6.3 1200.

I liked it better than the Tamron 18400 which I returned because when I retracted the 18400 lens too fast it seems to blow dust on the sensor and I had to constantly clean my sensor, retracting slower would be good, but cant always remember to do this, but this lens didnt seem to do that so that little bit of character helped for sure, Ive only been using it for a few outings and so far it seems to be a good lens, I do however see a little loss of sharpness at 400mm, but seems to sharpen up at 350, but needs more testing to be sure, might be me and my circumstances or style, could be my old eyes too. I also own the Tamron 150600 and have been testing side by side with this lens and it is a little easier to carry around and lighter for sure. I wish it would have come with the tripod collar instead of having to pay over 100 dollars to get it, but it doesnt seem to be too much weight on my cameras lens mount, Im using a Nikon D7500. Overall I like this lens, good price too.

The 100400mm Tamron is a Big Lens in a Small package. Not too long either, but comes in handy for those Walk around Days at the Zoo, Local Park, or a Trek in the woods. On a APC DSLR it will even get you out to around 600mm I find it to be Sharp and Darn Stable at 160th of a second Hand Held and even lower Still have some Reviewing to do, So Im not going to Brag Too Much.haha

I bought this lens for our first African Safari and wanted a lens that could have 600mm equivalent reach on my crop sensor D7500. I read all of the reviews with quite a different view on image quality and AF performance. My experience was great with this lens. Image quality even at 400mm 600mm Equiv was outstanding, AF was quick if not instantaneous and performance on moving subjects was very good. The range of 100400 is really good for any wildlife especially safari were the large animals can get pretty close. At less than 2.5 pounds it felt great handheld on my D7500 and was perfect for traveling in my backback. I took about 3000 shots with this lens on our east African Safari and was very pleased with the results. Any large telephoto like this is very sensitive to your technique. I think if you use high enough shutter speed and reasonably steady hands or bean bags you can get outstanding photos. I would recommend this lens for anyone doing wildlife travel as your go to lens.

I purchased this Lens for use with my Sony FS5 Camera. I have a MetaBones adaptor to Mount the Tamaron Lens onto my Sony Camera. There are some limitations using it with my Sony FS5 in terms of FStop control but it works and the Picture was Great It was sorta of a last minute purchase to Video Record a Gala and had about a 75 Ft throw to the Podium…No Problem Truly did the Job

This is an impressive lens my 5th Tamron lens. I had planned to buy the Tamron 150600 but instead opted for the 100400. That was a smart choice because this lens is easier to carry, very versatile and works well with the matched 2X teleconverter. This lens is lightweight and easy to use. Focus is spoton with my Nikon D610. Remarkably sharp all the way to 400 mm, with excellent contrast and color rendition. Very effective image stabilization. This has quickly become one of my favorite lenses.

You can call me an enthusiastic novice trying to up his game. This is my first serious lens for a D750 that I bought a couple of months ago. In my inexperienced hands, I found the textures of the zoom and focus rings difficult to identify by touch. The owners manual if you can call it that is far from ideal. The fact that I can get the 6year USA warranty is important to me, but the registration process is just plain weird. To complicate things even more, Tamron tells you where to look for the serial number and it is not where they said it would be. Its not even on the lens I accidentally found it on a cheap sticker tucked into the plastic pouch containing the socalled manual. I hope this is not indicative of their warranty service.I terms of actual use, I have only tried it out in my yard, focusing on distant mailboxes, tree limbs, etc. So far, so good. I hope I will learn more and get a lot of fun out of using this lens. Some reviewers have complained about sharpness. Come on folks, do you really expect tacksharp images while holding by hand

Very pleased with the first 60 images with this lens. Using it mainly for landscapes and cityscapes. Just wanted a little more reach than my 70200VR and this lens is actually lighter but physically about the same size, every bit as sharp too. AF hunts a little after dark is the only issue, so switch to MF in very low light… This lens and the D850 are a great combo.Recommended

I love this lens for a 100400 MM lens that is just as good if not better than name brand ones. For me a HobbyistSemiPro this lens allows me to step up my game in landscape and wildlife photography. I tried a 2nd hand Canon 100400 mk1 L lens but felt the results were not quite what I was looking for. For the same price, the Tamron 100400 was brand new and with a 6year warranty AND the results were spectacular. There are side by side videos reviews on YouTube and I could see I was getting a lens on a par with the more expensive Canon 100400 Mk2 L lens but at a third of the price. I would recommend this lens in a heartbeat if you can live without the brag value of a Canon red ring on your lens.

Im a seasoned photographer. A few years ago, we made the transition from analog to digital which was tough for us, since we owned several Canon bodies and multiple quality lenses. I currently own a Canon T6i, including a Canon 55250mm lens, but I wanted an additional one for birding, etc.I did quite a bit of research over a 12 month period, before purchasing this lens. While looking for a substantial lens with great reviews, I also wanted something that wouldnt break the bank i.e. no Canon lenses in this category. After using this lens for approximately 3 months, Im pleased to say that I have absolutely no regrets with the quality and weight of the lens, or the images.Ive used this lens in a variety of situations, including lowlighting, with great results. Ive yet to use a tripod, though Im sure there will be times when it will become necessary. There is no apparent aberration, even maxed out, and all my images are crisp.Bottom line, for the price, you cant go wrong. I would recommend and purchase, again.

This was my initial zoom telephoto purchased to replace the kit lens 55210 for the SONY 6000 and the 6500. It was available in a Canon mount, but not the SONY emount. In order to use on a SONY emount I coupled it to the SONY emount using a Sigma MC11 adapter. I subsequently also used it with a SONY A7R4.PROS 1 excellent image quality if used with tripod collar and on a sturdy tripod 2 Image quality sharper if used with remote cable shutter release, fast shutter speeds and Stabilization turned off. 2 Works with SONYs Blue Tooth Remote Controller, though functions somewhat limited. Autofocus, shutter release and programmable C1 button used to activate Playback of image all work reliably. 3 Relatively light weight, but should only be used by Superman if shooting handheld at 300400 mm zooms 4 Autofocus works well in bright daylight 5 Useful physical button to switch from Autofocus to Manual Focus 6 Reasonable price, until you add the extra cost of tripod collar.CONS 1 Autofocus doesnt work well in dim light 2 Often hunts for focus even on bright day if shooting in shade 3 Manual Focus magnifier of SONY ILCE series does not enlarge image on SONY A7R4 4 Does not provide DMF function on 6500 or A7R4 5 Tripod collar costs extra 130. The Tamron adapter also required an extended ArcaSwiss plate in order to balance the shifting weight as the lens protruded when zooming 6 Zooming causes lens to extend, and thus vulnerable to dust and moisture.Additional commentsSee previous comment on necessity of tripod with 300400 mm telephoto. But this would pertain to any serious telephoto lens . I further recommend use of a good quality gimbal head, such as the Wimberley WH200 for pictures of birds in flight, a remote shutter release to eliminate vibration, and turning off image stabilization when used on a tripod. Many of the complaints of lack of sharpness of images reflects on attempts to use handheld.Overall, this was a good purchase. At that time approximately 16 month ago, Feb 2019, the only other telephoto lens available for the SONY 6500 was the very expensive 100400 SONY for ca. 2,500. The SONY 100400 has an f 2.8 apertureSONY released the SONY 200600mm G lens in Fall of 2019. It was heavier than the Tamron 100400, but provides very fast sharp focus even in relatively dim illumination. It was about 600 cheaper than the SONY 100400 f 2.8, and only about 2,000. The SONY 200600 comes with a tripod collar. It is fully compatible with all functions of the Remote Blue Tooth Controller. Much less hunting for focus. But same limitation in aperture as the Tamron. The SONY 200600 received rave reviews. Surprisingly, image quality of the Tamron was about on par with the SONY 200600 when comparing image resolution of the same test sample at 200400 on both lenses. Color saturation was hard to differentiate between the two lenses. The Tamron 100400 extends from the body of the lens at higher zoom levels. The SONY 200600 does not, resulting in better distribution of weight and balance when used on a gimbal. The SONY 200600 is presumably a bit better dust and moisture resistant.

I recently bought this lens to try out shooting bif, hoping that it had good IQ. My first venture was photographing some bald eagles. The eagle was perched in a tall tree when I first zoomed in on it, when suddenly it decided to take off, the problem was that it was right at me. I had this lens on my D7200 and shot a burst as the eagle was getting closer. When I put the photos on my computer, I was amazed at the sharpness and the color. I have a Sigma 150500, but wanted something that was easier to carry. I even set my image area to 1.3 giving me 800mm and was surprised at the image quality. This lens is so nice to handle, quick to focus, smooth to zoom in and out.

The first time I tested this lens I didnt know what to expect. There was a G1 magnetic solar storm. I went up to photograph the northern lights on a cliff overlooking Lake Superior. It was 2 degrees with a 12 wind chill. The lens worked well in the cold, I was really happy with the results between the sharpness and how well it handled the temp.After sunrise, I was on Lake Superior photographing ice houses. A bald eagle landed to beg for fish from the anglers. I walked fast towards it hoping to get close enough to get the shot I wanted but it took off and flew right by me. I locked on focus and shot it as it flew by. It kept the focus the entire time shooting on a 1DX Mark II. The eagle ended up flying by me the other way and it kept focus the entire time the second time around.I do freelance photojournalism so I shoot a little bit of everything. Having 400mms I can handhold and throw in my camera bag is really nice to have. The biggest downside to this lens is it doesnt have as wide of an aperture as Id like. The advantage of its size makes it well worth it.This lens is far from the best 400mm lens out there. But with its size, price, quality, and build its worth every penny. I only used it once so far but from what I was able to capture with it Im very happy.

I am not a pro just an enthusiast. Which actually makes me likely you the exact target of this lens. I am shooting this lens on a canon 77D. Images can be outstanding when I nail the focus. Autofocus is fast, but I do not have the tracking success Dustin Abbot shows on his videos with the dog. I have many misses. But he is also using a much more powerful body and I am unclear on the exact impact of that…. although I assume it does matter. Much more likely is that its my technique, which I am practicingAfter 2 outings of shooting I was afraid I had a bad copy or that this was not the lens for me. So many out of focus pictures Pictures I felt like I was right on top of and my existing lens setups would have hit. Hours on the internet and I stumbled across the two most important tips for this lens. 1 Turn OFF the VC for any shutter speed above 1640 or so. Maybe this is common knowledge in some circles I had rarely seen it mentioned and I had no idea But at high shutter speeds the VC was absolutely blurring my pictures Turning off the Vibration Compensation and the success rate was night and day. I still have many out of focus shots but the sharp and pleasure of using the lens went way up 2 I was expecting this lens to reach further then it really is meant too. Its 400mm. If I want a really good shot of a Sparrow or small bird …. I need to be within 10 to 20 feet. Closer is better. A Duck or a Gull maybe 30 to 40 feet. And ALWAYS closer will be better always. In the end I have had the most success using either Center Point Only focus or the Center Small Zone focus the nine points Al Servo. I am glad I hung in there Because I see that I am going to be able to have a lot of fun with this lens once I really get better at using it. And its the right price for a person like me. No one is paying me to take pictures…. For Reference The other combo I own and have used quite a bit for wildlife is 135mm L 1.4x converter. Which is great and I will still use in lower light. Buy it used Its an amazing lens I also shoot mostly all Manual. OR Manual Shutter Aperture with auto ISO capped at 1600. Hope this helps I know I was looking for more reviews the last few weeks as I was narrowing in on pulling the trigger. Bring on the spring instagram jspencer999

Only had the lens a couple of weeks and so far taken about 500 pictures. Very happy with the results. Did my own testing for focusing and clarity at different setting. All came out quite well. Going to the Pacific Ocean tomorrow morning and shot some birds.Its not really that heavy to hand hold as Im a young 78. Thanks Tamron.

Well designed telephoto lens, was undecided between this lens and the equivalent Sigma 100400 mm lens. Both were very sharp, approx. the same weight but the deciding factor for me was the ability of the Tamron lens to accept the optional tripod mount.

I bought the Tamron lens about 2 weeks ago and upto now everything is fine. I read various revues and decided the cost saving was worth taking the plunge. I received regular emails from eglobal from taking the order to shipping updates and delivery date and everything went well. Delivery took about 2 weeks and I have no qualms about using eglobal again.

Went to an Air Force Academy Induction and used this lens to photograph the cadets who were on the field far away. Focus was great and fast. This is a very well made lens. I had another telephoto lens that did not focus as fast and did not have Vibration Control feature. I plan to take this lens on a Safari in August and looking forward to having this lens by my side

I purchased this lens after thinking if I should purchase the Canon 100400mm. After some serious thought I decided to go with the Taron. Originally it was the price that helped me decide. After my first use of the lens I knew that I had something special. I was somewhat bothered that I have to purchase the Tripod ring separately, at 130, and a carrying case.

For shooting my kids soccer and other activities, I used a Tamron 70200 f2.8 VC ii and it does a very good job, except at times I felt that I needed more reach than 200mm….Having the 2470 f2.8 VCii as well, I thought the new Tamron 100400 would be a great, light and compact zoom lens to add to my collection. After watching a handful of reputable reviews, including Dustin Abbotts videos, decided to purchase one. I have used it a handful of outings and have pushed the lens at its weakest, 400mm and f6.3….Have been pleasantly surprised at how well it did. At f6.3, its as sharp as my 70200, which is a sharp copy as well. The lens is the same physical size as the 70200. Its easy to handle, compact and loving the extra reach. As far as distortion, seems pretty good to me, I use the Canon 100400 lens profile in Lightroom. Photos posted are shot with a Nikon D750…..12000 shutter, f6.3 and iso 500….Yellow fence at 400mm, lady jumper at 200mm and white horse at 100mm.

I am a photographer on a budget. I own a Nikon Z6 and wanted a longer zoom, but the Nikon equivalent is almost 3x more than this Tamron. This lens is lighter, a little smaller and is perfect for my needs Saving up for a teleconverter next My only complaint is the tripod collar is sold separately, which adds another 100 but still well worth it.

Overall, this is a decent lens. Probably better than any of the previous Nikon AF 70300s Ive owned I have not owned the latest AFP one though. Its light, and sharp across most of the frame. may require some focus adjustments with the TAPIn console, so be sure to buy that at the same time or before you plan on using the lens. It would have been nice if Tamron offered it with the tripod collar at the time I purchased it, as a bundle for maybe 100 more the collar itself is 130 alone, but at least it the option to add a tripod collar, unlike the Sigma 100400, which does not.

If you listen to the Angry Photographer and some others you might be led to believe that this lens is fantastic. I have owned it for 89 months, tried it on numerous Nikon bodies from the lowly D3300 to the mighty mighty D850 and others in between including the D5500 and the D750. Photo Daves review on this site is exactly right. It is just not sharp. Its nice and light, easy to hold and seems to be of decent structural quality. But it is just not sharp. I have attempted to improve the acuity by using the tap in console. No luck. Save your money.

This lens does a good job, although sharpness degrades slightly from 350 to 400mm. I know that for a lens under 1,000 that one cant expect sharpness throughout the range. It does make sense that the sharpness should have been aimed at the long end. Like most of us I have other lenses that work quite well up to 200mm. The lens has an excellent ability to take macro images from up to 10 ft. away. This is great for skittish bugs, butterflies, etc. I tried the lens on my Canon 6d and Canon 60d. There is no noticeable different between the two bodies. Therefore I will use the apsc sensor body and get the reach I desire. This lens may not be as good as the Canon 100400, but I feel it is a better bang for the buck for a serious amateur.
