I have and love Sonys 24mm f1.4 GM lens for night photography but found that I was often wanting something a bit wider. So when Sony announced the 20mm f1.8 G lens, I was first in line to purchase it. I have no regrets whatsoever. This lens is incredibly sharp across the whole frame, even wide open at f1.8. In that regard it rivals the 24mm GM lens. The extra stop and a third of light compared to an f2.8 lens lets me drop my shutter speeds to around 5 seconds, completely eliminating any trailing of the stars with either my A7Riii or A7iii. The stars, even in the far corners, show virtually no chromatic aberrations, coma or astigmatism so long as they are properly focused. But the key is to be critically focused on the stars themselves. Otherwise you will get noticeable sagittal astigmatism. Dont trust hyperfocal focusing it wont work. If necessary take separate shots focused for the foreground and blend them in post. I will still keep the 24mm f1.4 for panoramic shots, but going forward the 20mm f1.8 will be my goto lens for most night photography.

This lens is bolted to my a9. The a9 is bolted to my face. Goodness, the color rendition, crisp details, edge to edge brightness, vibrancy, and character are all captivating and breathtaking. The lens fits the alpha body so perfectly. Out of the ten lenses I have used a lot with the alpha cameras, the 24gm feels the best balanced, both in weight and size. Its very comfortable to walk around and handhold the camera for hours and take handheld shots. The build features are great the aperture ring makes it easy to go from a razor thin depth of field to deep landscape, while the focus button takes full advantage of the blazing focus speed of the alpha cameras, and the manual focus ring is a smooth focusbywire system. Ive got a smokey Hoya variable ND filter I pop on front that combo brings such character to the images…reminiscent of the Zeiss 55. Its truly impressive how fine the detail is up close and from far away all the way across the frame. Still learning how to do portraits. The lens has built in image correction, so there isnt as much barrel distortionbulby face for close up portraits, but its still there. A bit of distance with a nice background works well and the f1.4 creates 3D pop. Architecture photography is a blast thanks to the details and vivid colors. Im also LOVING how well it captures film in 4K. So far Ive been less than impressed with the a9s ability to capture 4K, always seems choppy and laggy. But in a tough, lowlight situation a coinop shooting gallery in Old Town Sacramento the 4K video was smooth, bright, and vivid…watching it on a big screen put me right back in the moment. And thats what photography is all about…clarity of the moment. This lens does just that. Check out the comparison photo of a landscape with a rising sun. Even the Gods know how special the 24gm is they opened up the clouds once the lens appeared. The comparison is the 24205G77mm, the Zeiss 55, and the 24gm. Love each for their own abilities it seems the 24 is a blend of the strengths of the other two clarity of the 24105G with the character of the 55. Buy the lens.

I bought this lens to use with my Sony A7R IV. I wanted a prime lens that would produce great imagery without breaking the bank. I bought it after reading numerous online reviews and could not find a negative. I am absolutely delighted with the build quality, superb imagery and the weight Ive owned other manufactures 20mm f1.8 lenses, but for me this is the best I could have ever hoped for. Well done Sony in producing such a great lens at an affordable price.

Sonys lenses are of usual high quality. This one pushes above that high standard. For its size it feels light, although the weight of assurance of quality build is present. For now I am using it in my Sony a6000. It feels heavier than the camera, and due to crop sensor it behaves as a 36mm. The speed it focuses is instantaneous, and the Aperture ring in the lens becomes second nature to be used, and an unexpected convenience while filming, as it can have smooth rotation switched on. I cant review 100 about Aperture given I am still using a crop sensor buying soon Sony a7R III to fix that, but at f1.4 the background in close up composition simply melt. A surreal blend of colors that gets me rethinking possibilities of composition. Yes, this lens is FUN to use. It is easy to use and durable, so you dont worry about it too much yet I recommend get the insurance, this is still over a 1000 equipment. It is weather sealed too. Only side notes I can make are that for astrophotography this lens literarily shines. I was in a light polluted area, with rain, and the Autofocus still locked with precision at f1.4 at stars, like magic… And the Extra customizable button to side is only programmable in newer Sony Cameras, and mostly Full Frame. Certainly not in Sony a6000. And by the way, get this lens regardless of using a Crop Sensor or Full Frame, price bites, but when you are having fun with wide angles and landscapes, or low depth of field close ups, you will grin.

I love this lens Its sharp across the frame, even wide open. Autofocus is fast and accurate, definitely better than the Tamron 20mm f2.8 I upgraded from which is still a good option for those on a tight budget. As a hybrid shooter having the option to declick the aperture, and having an actual aperture ring to begin with, is very useful when shooting video. My oldschool video muscle memory can come out and play. 20mm is also a very useful focal length for video on my a7R III, using the various crop modes its like having three f1.8 primes attached at the same time. The extra function button on the lens is handy and well placed. Highly recommended.

Im not sure why this lens isnt getting the same amount of hype that the other new prime lens releases are getting. But for me, the fact that Sony improved this lens and managed to make it the lighter is INCREDIBLE The V1 2470 GM was already incredible but for this to be 200 grams lighter, makes it so much more pleasant to fly on a gimbal A 2470 2.8 lens can achieve so many things for a photographer or a Videographer Filmmaker. That I believe that having a lens in your kit is a must

Amazing lens for my A7iii. Pricey but worth every dollar. Was going to buy the sigma at half the price but read too many complaints of internal dust issues. The Sony is sharp, auto focus is fast and quiet, and the aperture ring is really cool if youre into that. The lens is on the heavier side but the it also offers a lot of options, so its to be expected. Would definitely recommend as a forever lens if you can afford it.

This might be the best lens Ive ever owned for any system. It is definitely the best 35mm Ive owned. The sharpness wide open is absolutely stunning, yet the bokeh is incredibly creamy at most distances. In other lenses, Ive found those two qualities are often at odds. Not in this lens. The AF is fast and has been perfectly reliable for me. Highly recommended

What a sharp full frame lens to pair perfectly with my a7RIV. Im no pro by any means but this lens has helped me take some great quality pictures. Works extremely well in low light. I travel frequently and have picked up photography as a hobby to capture the beautiful landscapes. The color definitely pops more with this lens than my previous Nikon cropped sensor lenses. The detail is there Even zoomed in the pictures retain their quality. This is a very pricey lens, however if you can afford it I would splurge on it. The focal length is good for many different types of photography.

Some people have said that Sony lenses look sterile and boring. Not this one. The 20mm f1.8 G will give a beautiful character and lovely colors to your landscape and urban photography. Also its a dream for astro light, fast and wide enough the 24mm is too tight IMO. You can get a wide angle zoom but they are slower, heavier and pricier. Only downside is that it breathes quite significantly, like the majority of Sony lenses. Want no breathing Get the 35mm f1.8. The body is solid and honestly they couldve but a GM badge in it and would fit perfectly. Great value for the money.
