This wireless microphone system has transformed my recording sessions. The setup is straightforward, and it connects seamlessly with my equipment. The sound quality is crystal clear, even in noisy environments, and the battery life is impressive, lasting through long shoots without needing a recharge. It’s incredibly reliable and has become a crucial part of my gear.

Firstly, I would say check your device compatibility on the Sony website. Just search for ECM-W3 and they have a full list of compatible devices. Mine, a Sony A7R V camera has a digital interface hot shoe, this means that once the receiver is plugged into the hot shoe on my camera, I’m able to record digitally, with no extra wires to the mic port. This can be important, it cuts down on camera clutter, it means I can leave my cage on the camera and mount horizontally or vertically. Set up was an absolute breeze. The microphones themselves offer excellent (and I mean excellent) noise quality. Voices are crystal clear, noise reduction works well, I honestly cannot fault them. In my testing, over distance, there was no noticeable lagging, they worked well. That is, with one caveat. The range that Sony claims is 150m, I tested these at 75m distance and the sound was good, as long as there was a line of sight between the transmitters and the mics. It says that 150m is possible within line of sight, and that part is critical. If someone turns/walks away and is facing the wrong direction, there can be some cut out. So, it’s more suited to front facing interviews/videos, than a general walk around. This may not be the case in short distances, but it was something I noticed at around 75m. Two wind screens were provided. These mount securely into the microphone jack, so there’s no chance of them coming loose. I didn’t test with these connected, as there was little wind. The same port could also be used to attach an external microphone (if you wanted a more discrete, out-of-shot mic). The microphone unit itself is very, very lightweight. Once clipped on, the mics are secure, and you don’t feel like you are wearing anything. Is everything perfect? Well, there could be a couple of improvements, especially at this price point. And that’s one, price. Let’s face it, these are not cheap. But, if you need crystal clear sound and have compatible devices, these are worth it. The other thing is that I would have preferred an external mic to be provided; the units are seen in any video you take when clipped to a shirt/pocket, so there’s no hiding away from that. And finally, a pouch is included, but the charging case provided houses just the mics and receiver, it would have been nice if all items, such as the optional mounting cradle and wind screens could have been stored in the charging case, as it would provide better protection from damage. Overall, though, these are small criticisms of what are excellent microphones with great-quality sound and a decent battery life. I’m edging between four and five stars based on the price and the minor issues I mentioned, but these are good.

There are a few things I primarily look out for in wireless microphones – the sound quality, latency, convenience and if a licence is required. Many wireless mics are technically illegal without a licence, so it’s worth checking. Good to say that this set from Sony passes all these with flying colours. The sound quality is excellent, and can’t fault it in any way. If you’re worried about loud volumes then the mics have a switchable 10 or 20dB attenuation option at source to save the output clipping, which is recommended to set to 10dB for speech. There are also options for noise cancellation. If needed then an external mic can be connected via a 3.5mm jack, e.g. for a lavalier mic and the transmitter unit can be hidden in a pocket. Latency is also very low. So many cheaper Bluetooth wireless mic sets have a small but noticeable delay in transmission which makes them less suitable for live situations. Even though these use Bluetooth technology, the latency isn’t noticeable at all. Note that there is a 3.5mm output from the receiver which can be used to connect to whatever is required and it is not required to have the Sony MI connector, so they have the flexibility to e.g. connect to a sound desk if needed. They do use Bluetooth, so are free to use with no licence requirements, something else that is good to know. On convenience, there is a useful carry case provided which is used to charge the two mics and the receiver. These all snap in as wireless earbuds often do these days, very neat and easy to carry. However, this is where some of the let downs start to be seen. The mics come with two good “dead cats” for wind suppression. The only provision to carry them is a cheap looking cloth bag. Similarly, the receiver unit comes with a small hot shoe adapter that enables it to go on a tripod, no space in the carry box, it has to be put in the bag. For this cost, why no mini foam lined case that can hold the charging unit and all accessories? Cheaper mic sets have included this. Then to charge you need a USB-C cable. None is provided. I first used a cheap cable (came with another mic set) and a basic USB adapter, the unit wouldn’t charge. Then a good (phone) cable with the good charger, it still wouldn’t charge. Finally the good cable with the basic adapter worked. For the price of this unit, it’s very surprising that literally no charging cable is included and I’m having to play the cable game to get it to charge. To connect to a camera or other device that doesn’t have an MI shoe needs a short 3.5mm audio cable. Is one included? No. “Commercially available” says the manual. For the cost of this, why was there not one in the box? Cheap wireless mics that are 1/10th of the cost of this package include all the cables, Sony is missing out here for some reason. Finally, cheap Bluetooth units always have an option to re-pair in case of the transmitter and receiver being disconnected. According to the manual these are “paired at the factory” and there is no way to reset this. Lose a mic and need to replace it? I guess you’re out of options. Something actually goes wrong and the devices forget each other? Out of luck. I don’t understand why this isn’t an option. So overall, an absolutely excellent wireless mic set with a really good set of features, just slightly let down by a few issues that seem out of place with a set in this price bracket.
