Amazing IQ at a great price. And super quiet for video. I had intended to use my F mount lenses on my Z6, but this Z mount 50 f1.8 is amazing. It is better in every way. Smooth, tight fitting, a precision instrument. Its so good, I decided to get the S 2470 f2.8, another great lens.
Bruce –
This lens is phenomenal for it sharpness across the board. Corners and sides are all ultra sharp on my Nikon Z6II.
Emily –
I upgraded to a Z6ii this year and am slowly replacing my sigma nikon lenses with the Z lenses. This one is really good. Its so fast to focus, I dont have to always double and triple check to make sure the images are tack sharp I mostly shoot wide open, its lightweight, and the colors are great. Its a really dependable, quality lens for the price though I definitely am eyeing that 1.2. Honestly the thing I like the least is the fact that I still use 23 nonZ lenses and having to move those lenses around on one adapter is kind of a headache, but thats not this lenss fault
Milton –
This is the best price to performance ratio lens ever made in my opinion. The lens is sharp wide open and stunning when stopped down. Extremely Happy with it.
ChaddB4 –
Awesome lens for portraits. Exactly what I needed. If you need a portrait lens for your Nikon mirror less camera, this is the one
Tom –
Ill spare the tech stuff. this is without a doubt a fantastic lens, my new 1 for portraits. I own 7 f mount lenses but I am definitely going all in on my Z7. I love my D750 but compared to mirrorless its feeling like a clunky old dinosaur. I still use it for weddings with its 2 card slots and is more than capable, but the new s line is in a different league as far as Im concerned. Worth every penny.
geebo –
No need to stop down for sharp results with this lens. A little pricey for a 85mm f1.8 but Id have to say its worth it. Never had a 1.8 lens this sharp wide open except for the 50mm 1.8s which is also a Z mount. Using on a Z6.
Olegpro13 –
very nice lens. Works perfect with Z6II. Much better then my old 85mm f1.4 G lens.
malcojame –
Fabulously sharp lens for the Nikon Z camera, producing great results.
Richard –
Have the new Z mount lens for two weeks now, am impressed with the corner to corner sharpness wide open Bokeh is fantastic I recommend this for anyone owning a Z body And of course BH always ships and delivers as promised, excellent product presentation in their website.I cannot wait to put it through this weekends wedding shoot
Jess –
I love this lens. Highly recommend it for portraits. The bokeh is great wide open. You will not be disappointed with this lens.
Noel –
Simply love my Nikon z7 mirrorless camera. Easy to hold and shoot, especially for someone small, like me. Add this Nikkor Z 85mm f1.8 S lens and you have a real winner Have taken action shots, scenery, people, whatever . . . everything is sharp and crisp. For prints, large or small, for computer work, for everything Ive tried. Havent tried the video yet but expect outstanding results. Try it youll love it.
Ponch –
Awesome Nikon glass. Nothing beats Nikons S line. Sharp lens.
Udo –
Another great addition to the S line of lenses for the Nikon Z mount. At f1.8 the focus fall off is smooth and the back ground blurs beautifully while the lens is sharp. I am also using this lens for night time street photography. Combined with IBIS, this compact and fast lens gives me new opportunities when shooting at night using available light only.
Paul –
I chose this as my first native Z lens because it isnt a focal length I have for the F mount, and thought I could use it for portraits and product photography. It has exceeded my expectations in terms of sharpness, clarity, and punch. It provides convincing proof that zooms simply cant match prime lenses for sharpness and fast focus. The big, juicy F1.8 is ideal for portraits, and has also served well collecting available light for event coverage and casual available light photos. As others have noted, the lens is surprisingly compact and light, suggesting that its quite mobile which it is and perhaps less durable which has yet to be established. Since the Z7 body has stabilization circuitry, the Z 85 mm can do without the weight, complexity, and expense of internal stabilization a clear advantage.Design is very simple and straightforward, with a wide focus ring, a manualautofocus switch, and no other features. All in all, the Z 85mm is a 5star performer.
Robert –
Love this lens. Good for everyday, with a wide range of applications. Lightweight, but packs a great punch with incredible detail and options.
Kevin –
This lens is super sharp Perfect portrait lens. Do not be afraid of shooting this at 1.8. No CA that I can see. Perfect I dont need 1.4
Colin –
Pros Fantastic images on the Z50.Cons Expensive compared to the older F mount version.
Derek –
I use this lens for product and portrait photography. Absolutely stunning sharpness and buttery bokeh.
Daniel –
The 85 f1.8G was my first 85mm lens and it was my go to lens for portraiture. Even though I had the 105mm f2.8, I preferred the 85mm.When I shifted to the Z system, I knew I wanted to get the 85mm S native lens. Although its much more expensive than the F mount 1.8G, I must say the 85mm S is sharper and handles distortion very well.
Lisa –
I bought the 50mm when I purchased the z6. This blows it out of the water, in my opinion. I really love it
Alan –
Ive been shooting Nikon for over 50 years and was an early adopter of the Z mirrorless system. This lens absolutely rocks on the Z cameras. It has a great feel to it and the ability to create really nice bokeh makes it an ideal portrait lens in my opinion. It is now my go to lens for all manner of portrait work.
Gregory –
Not surprisingly, I have found that I LOVE this lens I got it in just in time for a senior photo shoot and I was stoked I shot over 500 images on the shoot and found myself using this lens for roughly 75 of my shots. I had packed my 50mm f1.8 and my 2470mm f4 but was getting such clear, crisp, bokehfilled shots with this, I rarely switched it out. If youre looking for a wellbuilt prime that will consistently nail focus and give you beautiful, tacsharp images, look no further
FRANCISCO –
Amazing sharpness, super recommended for portraits or wherever you want. Must have in your Z camera
BDPNYC –
I purchased this lens to use with my Nikon Z7. Its very sharp. Actually sharper than my friends Sony 85mm 1.8. We tested it on a photo shoot and was very impressed. All I can say its a winner and you will not be disappointed.
Rodney –
I picked up this lens because I rented it and loved the images it produced. The size and weight of the lens were ideal for my shooting needs. The 85mm is my first Z mount lens and Im having a blast with it. Its quiet and focuses fairly fast. One thing to keep in mind is that there is no image stabilization, but the camera takes care of that. The image I shared is my niece for one of her senior pics. I focused on her jacket and its sharp. Id definitely recommend grabbing this lens.
Roberto –
Ive been a fan of Nikons 85mm for many too many years, and this one just blows them all out of the water No more FTZ plus older 85mm for my Z6
David –
I already had a Nikon f1.4 G and felt a bit guilty buying another 50. After buying the Z35 S lens, though, I just couldnt resist. This lens is the sharpest lens I think I have ever had. It is well made, and Bokeh seems better than described in some reviews I have seen. This lens is equal to, or even better than the 35 version. Great lens.
Truerreviewer2019 –
The NIKKOR Z 85mm f1.8 S Telephoto Lens is an excellent lens to use on my Nikon Z6, especially when im just out walking, looking for subjects to photograph, especially innear the park. A bit pricey, but still recommended on my part.
steve52uk –
Only done one portrait shoot with this lens so far and love it to bits, sharp results and great blurry backgrounds.
Zoe –
Used this lens for the first time last week and loved it. Stopped down, photos are sharp. Wide open, has pleasing bokeh.
JB –
Absolutely fantastic lens. Has the most beautiful bokeh and is incredibly sharp. Brilliant.
Troy –
The NIKKOR Z 85MM f1.8 S LENS is a very impressive lens that is great for portrait photography. The build quality is great, the weight is excellent, and the focus in pin sharp. I dont think Ive ever owned a better 85mm lens.
GusP –
Ive been waiting for this 85 mm portrait lens for my z6 for quite a while and this lens did not disappointSharpness is incredible. Bokeh is buttery smooth. Color contrast look fantastic. This lens is so much better than my 2470 f4 zoom at 70 mm f4 blows it away, understanding that this is not a fair comparison, but due to limited lens options for Z system, this is all I had. Photos just look magical on the 85 1.8.Please refer to other reviews of the 85 1.8 for testing of resolution, distortion, vignetting, other details e.g. Ephotozine review, Ricci Talks review on YouTube.I use the 85 mm to photograph mainly kids, and I can get shots of their faces, but if you get back far enough you can get more in the frame. I have shot with primes for many years and I am used to zooming with my feet. However there is only so much you can step back.I have just ordered the Nikon z 50 1.8 as well for a wider field of view than the 85 mm for more of a walk around lens. I have generally favored primes over zooms and I shot with a 35 mm for many years and loved it. I considered the Nikon z 35 mm 1.8, but in most reviews, the sharpness is not as good as the 50 mm 1.8 particularly not until you get to 2.8 e.g. see reviews at pcmag and photography life, where you can compare their 35 mm review to their review of the 50 1.8. Id like to shoot at 1.8 when I need to, so stopping down to 2.8 is not ideal. Additionally I had actually rented the 35 1.8 back when I first bought my z6 and I was not impressed with the performance at 1.8. I also considered the 2470 2.8 I have the 2470 4, but for my shooting of subjects that dont stay completely still e.g. kids, I can get faster shutter speeds lower ISO, and more shallow depth of field with the 50 1.8, and the cost of the 2.8 zoom is extremely high for a leisure non professional photographer 4 times the cost of the 50 1. 8.In summary, if youre looking for a portrait lens for the Nikon z system, the 85 mm 1.8 will not disappoint. FYI, I ordered mine at Best Buy and had it shipped to the store which I was very happy with, was in new condition, etc. I have had some issues with lenses from the company named after a river in South America. My other go to company is the one in NY that starts with a B, but I am getting great service at Best Buy so I have been buying lenses at Best Buy.
Bo –
Almost perfect 85mm lens. Nothing really to complain. It has great sharpness for the detail not as crazy as 50 1.8s and fast focus. Hope it has more solid and shorter body to last longer. Grab it when on sale.
Dylan –
The 85 1.8 is incredibly crisp. The bookeh is the right amount, in my opinion. Performs great in low light as well. Pricey but worth it
Dave –
This lens is awesome. Yes, its twice the size of a normal 50mm lens, but its worth the burden. It is amazingly sharp, quick, quiet, with very nice bokeh, and still balances nicely with the camera body despite the size.
Bob –
Number one thing for me and this lens is its sharpness at f1.8. And it delivers. Its fast to focus, lightweight, and feels good.
Christopher –
This is the only Z prime I own. I also have the kit zoom, plus the 24702.8. Aside from that its all adapted F mount lenses. Im working with a pair of Z6s on events, portraits, and film.At recent shoots, I kept going back to this lens because its lightweight, it focuses fast, and it produces beautiful images. It outperforms the 85mm1.8 G Fmount, though that shouldnt be much of a surprise. The supergiant focus ring on this lens is kind of funny looking, but works well and is actually a good design choice. Its easy to quibble about the price or the fact that this isnt a 1.4. But in practice, I shot a pile of portraits at f1.85.6 on this lens, and was happy with all of themas were my clients. If you like the 85mm length in general, you will dig this lens.
Edward –
The 50mm makes a splendid walking around lens when coupled with the Z50 body. IT feels professional and provides very sharp images. On the Z50 bodys cropped sensor, the lens has a 1.5 x 50 75 75mm field of view and this is a bit unusual for anything other than a zoom lens but offers quite a range of opportunities for street photography. See images attached.
Jim –
This is the lens that made me realize Nikon is really doing something special with the Z mount. How can it be so sharp across the frame wideopen Lenses are just not supposed to perform this well, especially at this price. Exceptional lens.
Chaitanya –
I bought this lens for the Nikon Z6. I use it to take pictures of my infant. This lens is lightweight and produces stunning pictures with gorgeous bokeh. I highly recommend this lens
Canderson –
Sharp crisp images. Perfect for portraits and outdoor use. Love this as my goto lens.
Doug –
When I had my A7 my 55 1.8 was on the camera most of the time. Probably the sharpest lens I ever owned. This lens is every bit as good . These lenses are large , but worth every penny.
Lanre –
Exactly what was advertised. Easy of use and quality marched the specs of the product.
SwimmingHamster –
My first prime lens and very impressed with the results it produces. Good Bokeh, nice depth of field, a quality piece of kit. Superb performance in low light. I shoot with a Z50, so taking into consideration crop factor, it works out to be a 75mm. Amazed by the sharpness of the pictures even after a post image crop. I now understand why pro photographers say it all about the glass.
Julius –
This lens just blows me away, the sharpness and details are already at the maximum wide open at F1.8. Stopping down only gives you depth of field.Beautiful, smooth bokeh at large F stops such as 1.82.8 withincredible sharpness of the subject. This lens is every bit as good as the Sonys famous 90mm F2.8Macro I had it for a while or maybe just maybe even a bit better. And all the above is with the Nikon Z7 at 45.7MP resolutionOne more thing, this lens is tack sharp wide open at F1.8 from edgeto edge and corner to corner. I really dont think that lenses can get any better than this lens.
Robert –
Its a good lens that is definitely better than its F mount equivalent, and I have always like the results from that lens. The only downside is the camera system you have to attach it to needs more work when it come to the AF system writing this as a Z5 owner. Your results may be different depending on the camera you have.
EdanElonPhotography –
The Nikon NIKKOR Z 85mm f1.8 S is the perfect lens for those closeup portrait shots. I wouldnt necessarily label it as a Telephoto lens as its only 85mm 127.5mm on the Z50 and nowhere near 200mm or even 600mm. However, This lens is sharp, very sharp for an entrylevel lens. I call it entrylevel as even though this is an S series lens, its not nearly as fast as other NIKKOR glass with 1.4, 1.2, or even .95 apertures. This doesnt mean, though, that the images are any less than crisp as this lens is sharp throughout the aperture range even wide open. Also, gone is the annoying autofocus noise of the old Fmount lenses. These new Zmount lenses are silent, not quiet, silent. Youd have to be in a truly noiseless environment to hear the autofocus. The only drawback to this lens is the coating they tout on the website. Its supposed to protect against fingerprints but is quite awful. Dont accidentally touch your glass or take it out into the world you will very quickly find fingerprints and or random dots on your glass. So either clean it often, put a filter on it, or try to stay indoors as best as possible. Other than that 1010.
Mark –
Cant add anything to the favorable reviews . Im committed to the Z system. Selling my 1424 2.8, 2470 2.8 and my 70200 2.8 and moving to the Z lenses. The Z 85 1.8 is outstanding.Great portrait lens. Bokeh is outstanding at 1.8 and even at 2.0. Looking forward to the new Zs.
IanS –
Added this as a upgrade replacement for my f mount 50mm prime that is a great lens. Once again like the 35mm I already have the lens is just superb. The focus is pin sharp, fast and silent. The perfect lens for portraiture and due to the wide aperture creates a nice bokkeh. The lens is compact and light and a great addition to the camera bag.
Thomas –
I compared this lens to the 851.4d, the cream machine. Both lenses wide open on my Z7. I could not tell any difference in the soft background, and on some scenes the f1.8 actually looked better. However in terms of ergonomics the Z1.8 is far superior lighter, fast AF, and probably sharper a lovely lens on the Z7.
John –
Handles wonderfully, sharp, contrasty, no distraction distortions even in the corners. All in all a great bargain.
kimbosliced –
Great lens and the clarity is very good. I use it on a Z6 with great results
Kenneth –
I took a few images with this lens on my Z7 and was impressed with the results. Its tack sharp edge to edge and will be in my bag at all times. I have not tried portraits with it but expect it should shine.
MichaelS –
You will be hard pressed to buy a better 85mm lens than this one. Very sharp and corner to corner sharpness is really good Another fine prime Z lens from Nikon.
Bob –
This is an awesome 85mm prime. Beats the FMount 85 f1.8 and easily rivals the f1.4. No regrets getting rid of both of them for this one.
scott –
Exceptionally sharp and quick focusing lens. Very quiet as well. Difference in bokeh between f1.8 and f1.4 is not that great and the lighter weight and lower cost will more than compensate for most photographers. Bokeh is very smooth and buttery. No complaints there at all. There is really nothing negative to say about it. If you need an 85mm lens with the Zmount I feel this is a better option than the adapted Nikkor 85mm f1.4 or f1.8. At least compared to the 85mm f1.4G I once tried the Z lens is sharper. If you absolutely need the faster lens, then the choice is clear.
Toni –
The lens feels very good in hand and is well build. Shipping was quick and customer service is top notch
Teov –
Great lens , sharp photos definitely sharper than the f lens. Native glass is the way to go
John –
Fantastic lens. Just ultra sharp and works flawlessly. Truly a top tier lens.
Claudia –
Love the bokeh effect you get while keeping the subject in crisp focus
Marne –
I have shot Nikon lens for over 45 years. The Z lens has to be one of the sharpest Ive ever owned. Fast focus, even in continuous focus mode. Glad Ive made the change. I also own the FTZ adapter with prime lens from my D750 camera. They are good but not as fast or sharp as my Z lens.
Timothy –
Love this lens This is the first prime lens and I am not regretting the purchase Very crisp images with a very simple design.
CHARLES –
Excellent vibrant and natural colors in very low light conditions. My other lens is an f4 and it could not handle the dim light in which the 2.8 excelled.
Godzillafan –
Very sharp lens on the Z7. But since I bought it I struggled with the price. Its ungodly expensive. It costs twice as much as a F mount 85mm G prime. I tested the 85mm Z against the FTZ mounted 85mm prime G lens. There was not a drastic or noticable difference. I ultimately returned the 85mm Z, not because of any fault with lense. I actually loved it. But for the quality and the price of using a FTZ mounted 85mm Prime G lense, theyre nearly identical. If you want to spend the extra money its a great lense, but you can get the same performance for half the price.
Mark –
I find this lens to be just what Ive read it is. Sharp, versatile, a good street photography lens, a great portrait lens and small and lite enough to carry around all day. Very Happy with my purchase.
Patrick –
I have owned the 85mm 1.8D and 85mm 1.8G from Nikon as well as the 85 1.4G. I believe that I have a serious problem with 85mm 1.8 and 1.4 lenses, which causes me to never be satisfied with what I have, constantly purchasing other iterations. I hope there is an addiction recovery group for people with my problem At any rate, I believe the 85 to be the perfect focal length for the portraits I take. There is no shortage of choices for the 85 users in the marketplace. This can be a good thing for the enduser as we have plenty of choices and manufacturers hopefully are putting their best products out there to entice our business. Nikon has yet to disappoint me with the 85s I have purchased thus far. But there has to be one that is superior to the others, right And that is what drives me to purchase the newest model. Edgetoedge sharpness, lack of distortion, zero CA, perfect bokeh balls, KodachromeEsque color rendition, and neuralnet focusing speed please and thank you And, with the mirrorless revolution or should I say hijacking, Nikon has implied all the above with the Z system and S lenses. But do they deliver They get really close with the 85mm f1.8 S lens. As close as the Z mount cinches the rear of the lens to the sensor in my Z7. And that is millimeters close I am very happy with this new lens. It checks all the boxes for me, leaving me wanting nothing. And since I still have my older bodies and lenses, and the FTZ mount, I really dont have to be disadvantaged by making this choice, now do I And neither do you. Buy this lens. Buy it from BH. You cannot lose. You have everything to gain. Trust me.
Matthew –
I adore this lens, but you have to remember that for whatever reason, its twice the size of the 50 1.8 lenses that you grew up with or if you ever used a film camera. Its probably the motors which I think are dual could be wrong. The build quality is SUPERB compared to the lenses that went on my consumer grade D5600. But also twice the weight. Gotta pay for quality of optics, mechanisms inside the lens and overall build quality somewhere. Its just that I once had a Sony a6000 and that was an absolute toy compared to this in build quality not in engineering I think the Sony was great But I should have this 50 1.8 s Nikkor Z mount literally forever.
Jeffrey –
This is tremendous lens, with great clarity throughout the range. I am new to shooting with a fixed focal length prime lens and so far it has been a joy to use. It has amped up my interest in photography
David –
Pros A sharp and light lens . Excellent valueCons No bad points
John –
With a fast growing 2 year old grandson I wanted to take some legacy portrait photos. Just shot my first few days with this and the clarity, DOF, and speed of this lens is awesome…particularly when one considers the price. I then used the lens for a predawn shoot of the sunrise and was equally impressed. Didnt expect the landscape shots to be that awe inspiring given the high aperture setting but they were fantastic and the color was nofilter If you have the kit lens with the Z6 or Z7 Id suggest this versatile and high value lens be the first lens you buy. You may never use the kit lens again.
JULIAN –
Great lens. I use it for street photography and get great results. Fast focusing and great bokeh.
VLADIMIR –
This is without a doubt a fantastic lens, my new 1 for portraits I also have the Nikon f2.8 70200 mmI have been very impressed with this 85s performance Its small and convenient and very very sharp.
Agoode –
Nikon has done it Again with this Camera lens I have the 85 1.8 G for DSLR and this is three steps better glad I brought this for the Z6
Ben –
Pros Best 85 I have ever used. Incredible sharpness across focal plane, no aberration or purple fringing when shooting wide open into the light, fast autofocus. What more can I say, I have five Z lenses and they are all superb. Dont believe the negative comments online. The Z cameras and lenses are the best Nikon have produced to date.Cons If it could be smaller that would good but then performance would suffer so you cant have everything.
John –
I havent had much time with the lens yet, but the first day I had it I foundIt is excellent in image qualityIt focuses quickly eye focus worked without a hitchMost importantly, it is compact and light weight. I prefer it to my 85 1.4 with the ZTF. Trading 1.8 for 1.4 is worth the reduction in weight and size. Now if Nikon can make a 105 mm f2.8 macro Ill be very happy.
Alex –
This was my first Smount lens when I transitioned from Nikons Fmount. It is sharp, as you can expect from a Nikon 50mm lens. The autofocus is superb. This lens is of course a little less compact than its predecessors. I did initially struggle to justify the significant price difference, and I considered keeping my old 50mm and skipping this upgrade. But, I am please overall, and this is consistently my mostused lens.
James –
This is my first native, prime lens purchase for my Nikon Z 6. Like a number of Nikon users, I am living in two worlds, F mount lenses using the FTZ adaptor and Z mount native. This compliments the 2470mm f4 I already own. I am very happy with the edge to edge sharpness Ive observed on landscape photos and a pleasant, soft bokeh for close up portraits taken wide open. I believe the autofocus on this 85mm is significantly faster than my F mount NIKKOR 50mm f1.8 with the FTZ. I like that BH included the Hoya UV filter since I like to protect the lens using a filter and this one is high quality. I recommend this lens for anyone who owns or is purchasing a Nikon Z body and wanting to get the best results from their mirrorless Nikon system.
Joanna –
I was looking for a Z6 lens that would be lighter and offer some flexibility for close up. This is a new lens for me as I have been using Zoom lenses for the most part. I got it just after my big trip, so have only used it a little, but find the pictures sharp and the camera lighter to hold. It should travel well and I look forward to my next trip.
John –
A nifty fifty that tops the optical performance of my Sigma Art 50mm and weighs much less, focuses faster and costs about the same. Very happy.
Patrick –
I bought the 85mm F1.8 AFD in 1999. That has been my favorite lens through the years. This Z lens is every bit as good probably better. With the Z6, I tap the screen to focus and shoot and this lens never misses. Lighting fast AF, beautifully sharp with pleasant bokeh. You can use your AFS lenses on the FTZ adapter, but I would encourage Z67 shooters to consider this lens.
Rick –
Shortly after purchasing the Z6 w2470 lens, I ordered the 50mm f1.8. Ive been extremely happy with it. Very sharp and excellent in low light situations. Stays on the Z6 much of the time. If youre thinking about purchasing the 50mm f1.8 … just do it
ATLUSER –
This is an incredible portrait lens Dont overthink it if you have a Z camera you need this.
ranieves25 –
I jumped ship from a Fuji set up to the Z6ii. All I can say is wow Amazing camera system. This lens is outstanding, highly recommend.
Marco –
This lens is one of the best investments I made I thoroughly enjoy this baby It is as sharp as a knife The bokeh is everything and very compressed. This is definitely a 1 in my bag Thanks BH Photo
AK –
This new generation of Nikon lenses, the Nikkor Z SLine, are fantastic. Edge to edge sharpness, beautiful bokeh, and really good contrast. This 85mm is no exception.
Lisa –
This lens is very sharp and a great addition to my other lenses. Love using this lens for taking portraits.
Andras –
a well respected lens, as proven by various tests, at a very good price. This price has now been equaled by Nikons cashback promotion. eglobal centrals customarily good service of following through and keeping you informed stepbystep.
Steven –
I have had this lens for 2 weeks now. Preordered from BH right after its available. I predicted it will take a while for this lens to become in stock due to high demand and valuecost ratio. I have used through many copies of 85mm 1.8 lenses of Nikon G, Sony FE and this new 85mm 1.8 Z mount is the best Sharp wide open, pleasant outof focus background, nice contrast, very well built..feel very solid in hands and yet still keep good size and weight. I dont need f1.4 or 1.2 anymore when I have a sharp lens at 1.8 wide open. Now I have all three Z primes 35, 50 and 85 1.8S. Highly recommend
Toni –
Lens is build very well. A bit bigger than other nikon g lenses, but the way it feels makes up for it. Impressed by the client service
Telady –
One of my favorite lens so far to used on my Z6 Excellent for portraits and Events.
Daniel –
As a full time advertising and editorial photographer for the past 30 years, I have been well acquainted with and have owned a number of Nikon and other brand 50mm lenses. Many of them have been good to really good but never quite hitting Zeiss Otus or Leica good.until now. This 50mm 1.8 lens is just mind blowing good. At 1.8 it is by far the sharpest 50mm I have used from Nikon and handily beats other brands out in terms of flare resistance. The new coatings they are using on these lenses are no joke, the color and light transmission is just superb. I expect all the S lenses for the Z series cameras to live up to this expectation as the 2470 F4 is also right along the lines of the 50 in terms of color, contrast and flare resistance. Nikon may take awhile to enter into new markets and methods but they do it for a reason. Nikon is hitting it out of the park with these S lenses.
Dfidman –
Brilliant performer. Light, smooth and tight. The images are perfectly sharp at all stops. The bokeh is drooling good. Portraits are outstanding. I always look forward to seeing images struck by this lens. Love it…sweepstakes
Charlene –
Purchasing from this company made everything a breeze. I need my lens shipped ASAP next day and they made that happen. They are very nice. It felt like they wanted to help me and they cared about my concerns. Unlike Adar… thank you guys soo much. The lens is amazing. Its everything I wanted and more.
Casey –
This lens is wonderful Very sharp Best portrait lens in my arsenal

the lens came in exactly as what I want. Purchase from BH may not be the cheapest, but everything is predictable, package, delivery etc. No surprise at all. The Nikon lens is pricy, however, reliable and solid. Careless me have already dropped it on wood floor twice after arrival, the lens only suffer mild damage to the hood. Lucky or reliability
HJPolisJr –
This lens is simply amazing It is a must have for anyone running a Z series Nikon body. The bokeh this lens produces is beautiful. It is a great addition to your lens collection if you are already running the 2470mm f4 kit lens which is also exceptional by the way.If you are on the fence about whether or not to purchase this lens, do it. You will not regret the decision at all.
TimB –
This is a wonderful lens, as are all the Nikkor 1.8 S primes. Highly recommended for image quality, light weight, and value relative to other options. Have a 35mm 1.8 S, a 50mm 1.8 S, and this 85mm Snext the 20mm 1.8 S and then Im done with the primes until the 105mm is released.
Kyle –
Very sharp lens. Would continue to purchase the Z lens line up however the cost leaves much to be desire. Takes very sharp photos even at f1.8. Very minimal fringing occurs if any.
Joseph –
I bought this lens for street photography with a Nikon Z7 body. The lens is good for storefronts and people. Its high quality and affordable.
gene –
Beautiful lens for portraits and still life. Crystal clear edge to edge, even in low light. Fast focus. Perfect addition to your Nikon Z lens set. Also makes great omelettes and cleans the gutters with ease.
John –
This is a fast, sharp and lightweight lens. You might not look like a pro with this small piece of glass…but it performs amazing
Terry –
I was bummed to see this lens is now on sale for 100.00 off. I should have waited a week to order it.I love the Nikon Z7 camera body and Z lenses
Indra –
Great lens. Light weight, tack sharp, quick autofocus, weather resistant. Produces great results and virtually no chromatic aberration. Very very silent. Beautiful color.I wish the lens hood would be have been slightly wellbuilt and not just plastic. Regardless of the quality of this lens, I feel price could have been slightly lower it being a 1.8 max aperture.
Steve –
Incredible quality. Easy to use and excellent build quality. Well made product.
NottheMomma –
Perfect for what is it meant for. I found out after the fact that Nikon designed this lens with portraits in mind. Combined with the Z6, this is awesome. the 85 mm otherwise is not ideal for outdoor photography and too tight for indoor. It does not zoom in or out and its not supposed to. With the high quality photos, one can zoom quite well in the editing faze. It is ideal for facial photos in the 1015 foot range. Light gathering ability means taking pictures without flash provides excellent photos and the 1.8 lens means a faster Fstop. overall, Ive been quite happy with this lens.
Leslie –
The 85 is my all time fav, always has been. Next step will be upgrading to the 1.4 when they develop it Much sharper than with the ftz adapter and f mount though. Def worth it.
Owen –
This is Nikons sharpest 50mm lens. For events, this and the Z 85 are a must haves for your kit. Sell your F glass and move up to Z. You wont regret it.
Simon –
Pros Its a great sizefit for the z6. Can I also say I love the look of the new lenses and it looks similar enough to my Tamron G2 selection that my wife hasnt asked me anything about it Lol.Cons Its not metal.
Puxiao –
The reviews on this lens for its overall image quality is what sold me. The lens has lived up to those reviews for me thus far in using for both stills and video. The f1.8 for me on stills provides the shallow depth of field that I want in portraiture, and this lens AF motor is so quiet that it works perfectly well for my video work. And when its on sale, its a good value. Highly recommended
Lyman –
This lens has wonderful bokeh and focuses sharp wide open. Its a little larger that other 85mm lenses, but not overly large.
William –
Very refined optics, easy to use, excellent focus and focus options. Perfect for portraits. Outstanding in low light. This will be my go to lens for most of my photographs.
Alexis –
My 85 prime was stolen a couple years ago and I hadnt had the chance to replace it until just recently. Boy, oh boy did I miss this lens Thank you BH photo for the quality lens and for shipping so fast
John –
I was on the fence a long time with buying this lens. I already have Nikons 85 f1.4G lens, however since committing to the Z bodies, I wanted a native 85mm. This lens is light and extremely sharp, much sharper than the 85 f1.4 G, even f1.8. Focus is very good, and bokeh is smooth. Im extremely happy with this lens.
ChenW –
A very sharp and fast lens for portrait photos. The wide aperture allows higher speeds at low light conditions and still with perfect pictures. Attached is a picture with minimal post processing.
Jim –
This lens is incredibly sharp, edge to edge, with creamy bokeh. It balances well on the Z7 body and has reasonably quick focus.Great for portraits.
Craig –
Its been a long time since I shot with a 50mm lens, assuming my 2470 had the focal length covered, but using a prime lens again reminds me of the incredible quality they can provide. This lens is both fast and sharp edge to edge. I love for the sharpness as well as the fast focus and rich colors. It is lightweight and full featured. I now realize how much I like being able to choose functions for the focus ring.
Jeff –
Incredible lens love love love So sharp its crazy So glad I made the switch to mirrorless.
Robert –
Optically, this is the best 85 mm lens I have every owned and Ive had 3 on the F side of Nikons glass in this focal length. I have it mounted on my Z6 where it shows great resolution across the frame from f1.8 on down. A little pricey but worth every penny if you use this focal length much and I do. You shouldnt be disappointed.
Jack –
Its the lens you must have. Its impressive for the image quality.
Peter –
Nikons Z lens series has been nothing short of brilliant in design and image quality. This is my portrait lens and it delivers crisp and colorful images, weighing a fraction of what I was used to…
Steven –
Absolutely stunning lens. If you are considering the purchase of a Z system, the 85mm 1.8s should be a staple in your kit. DO NOT be put off that its a 1.8 and not a 1.4. The sharpness, bokeh, and close focusing distance is incredible, not to mention the price is almost too goo to be true for what you get. Ive used the 85mm for a wedding, product photography, and dogs in action, in the same weekend and it is simply without fault. There is a reason that you cant find it second hand, It is just that good.
Craig –
Not much to add to all the other positive reviews here this lens quickly became a favorite of mine. Absolutely sharp, gorgeous bokeh, lets in tons of light Not too heavy, not too light feels really good. I havent had prime lenses in quite a few years, now I remember why I love them so much. If youre a Nikon Z person, and you capture people andor pets this lens is a musthave.
Raphael –
I have this and the 50 1.8 S. This isnt much longer than the 50, but I wish both were shorter, being primes. This makes a tiny bit more noise than the 50 when focusing, but really not a big deal. Very happy wthe image quality so far. Ive been shooting at 1.8, which I never did on my old 85 1.8 AFD lens, always shot that one at 2.8, happy wthe oof, nothing magical, but not distracting. Imho there isnt a better all around 85mm option out there.
squigg23 –
Lightweight, shows the full potential of the Zmount, excellent bokeh. Definitely a wonderful lens and in the right hands capable of some magic.
STEVEN –
I got this prime lens a while ago because of its focal length and its max aperture.the quality of the lens surpasses my expectations. it does not disappoint.
kardhani0 –
Really great product. Focus is INSANE. Love using it for taking pictures of my friends while we do things together
Robert –
Just purchased Z6 and 2470 and 50mm lens. Took over 200 photos with 50mm and never used a flash. Excellent in low light. This camera will out do the D500 which I also have.
85mm –
This lens is a must have in your arsenal. Crisp, clean shots every time
David –
I use this lens mainly for making gicles of fine art so parameters like center to edge sharpness, vignetting, and distortion are important to me. Although I mainly use this lens stopped down, sharpness even wide open is excellent. Distortion is virtually nonexistent and vignetting at f4 and above is low. While these are correctable errors and already imbedded in the raw files, it is nice to know there is not a lot of correction needed to begin with. For portraiture, I really like this lens. Wide open compared to my faster 85mm f1.4G, it is noticeably sharper. Bokeh in most cases I have seen so far is actually hard to distinguish between the two.
Cordelia –
This lens is so nice that create the perfect bokeh on the photos. The photos look very nice even at night shoots
Felix –
Simply a beautiful lens with awesome sharpness and image quality…a must lens for your Nikon camera.
George –
Beautiful image and bokeh at fully open. Used it this past weekend for a lifestyle shot and couldnt be happier with the results.
Gwen –
I am so in love with this lens. Im a professional photographer and this lense is simply amazing
Joel –
Ive been using this lens for portraits of babies under poor at home lighting conditions and the results have been amazing. Extremely sharp at f2.0 and ISO 4000 on a Z7. Nikon has really hit a home run with this combination.
Todd –
Truly a beautiful lens, and one that renders incredibly well across the frame. The weatherproofing is pure icing on the cake. The best prime Ive ever used, including the 105mm macro from yesteryear. Fast focusing, too
Jeremy –
Pros Lovely sharp lens, fast auto focus and great results. Pairs very nicely with the Z6 in my view.Cons For someone looking for a smaller lighter option, the FTZ adapter with the cheaper Fmount 1.8 by Nikon may be a better choice this is quite a hefty lens, though the glass is definitely better.
Gabriel –
I dont know how much of the difference should I attribute to the lens I was previously on a smaller sensor and using a zoom, but after sharing some pics, a couple of friends where impressed by the nice contrast and rendering of the colors. I wonder about the size of the lens. Why arent nifty 50s compact anymore
Richard –
I have owned the lens since it first shipped out in September and have loved every bit about it. The focus, the speed and the near edge to edge sharpness. In MidNovember, just a couple months and a dozen jobs later, I notice the manual focus ring was slipping of the gearclutch to focus. I didnt lose my autofocus abilities but manual had become completely unreliable. I have sent it in to be repaired and will update the post after hearing their explanation
Hendricks –
Good bokeh, pleasantly compact and light, nochromatic aberration noted, tack sharp. I will use forfamily portraits and small groups. I will use on both z6 and z7. I have reassigned the focus ring to exposure compensation and I do wish the focus ring was smaller and near the back of the lens. Every time I pick up the lens or handle the barrel Iknock off the exposure. All in all a great lens.
Terry –
I have been wanting to upgrade some of my older lens and decided on this one for gear bag. I am using this lens with my Z6 and I have been really impressed with the quality of the images and the ability of it in low light situations. Doesnt hurt also that it is a F1.8 either. So far no issues or complaints.
Anonymous –
Superb image quality, sharp across the frame even at f1.8. The best lens of this fieldofview Ive ever used. Although its relatively large for 50mm it balances well because the weight is distributed towards the rear of the lens.
Isaac –
Excellent lens for portrait and for details.super sharp and excellent bokeh effect. Another Z lens for my collection. Did I mention the Bokeh Wow
Julius –
This lens is just amazing, razor sharp wide open from edge to edge. This lens exceeds any 50mm lens I had for any camera. You can only gain depth of field by stopping it down, the sharpness is already unsurpassed wide open. You can look at the picture below which was taken at F1.8 and the house number cropped out at 100.
Neil –
Super sharp across the entire image. Focuses very fast I was using Nikkor Fmount lenses with an FTZ adaptor and the result was fast focus, but the Z 85mm focus is even faster. Its not super small, but I dont mind the somewhat larger size since the performance is more that justifying the sizeweight. I find it to be a great lens for portrait photos, but I think it could be a staple for everyday use too. A bit on the pricey side, but if you can swing it, I recommend it, especially if you dont already have an 85mm prime lens that can be attached to the Z bodies I use a Z6.
George –
I purchased this lens for the Z7. Its resolving power exceeds my expectations and is at least on par with the Sigma Art series lenses. The size, while large compared to a DSLRs 1.8 equivalent lens, is perfectly matched to balance and be ergonomic with Nikon Z mirrorless cameras. The bokeh is a little bit busy for my taste, but still more than acceptable. The lens comes with a thin lens wrap which, while better than nothing, is in need of replacement. I Purchased a LensCoat LensPouch neoprene pouch in smallwide to hold this lens plus the hood reversed. The days of an awesome lens case, shipped with a lens, have long expired.
LALITHA –
I absolutely love this lens Adorama sent it very carefully packaged and it came in great condition. Would highly recommend ordering.
Satish –
Adorama Great Service, shipped on time, no more looking onto other sites for the best deals.Nikon Loving my 85mm S lens. I did a couple of shoots for my family and everyone liked the pictures. Sharp and clear.
Chi H –
I am a long time fan of this 85mm focal length, having used all different Nikon 85mm the only one I do not own right now is the 851.4 G AFS. I love this Z 85mm. On Sharpness may be this lens is not as sharp as the Sigma 851.4 or the Zeiss 851.4, but its sharpness is uniform across the frame, not just in the center. This may not be a problem for portraits as we do not need much sharpness beyond the center, but for mid telephoto landscape or nature, I need this uniform sharpness and this is clearly the first 85mm that gives this in truly differentiating form. A second aspect that is important in the 85mm is bokeh. May be this lens does not render bokeh as beautifully as my Nikon 1051.4 or my Nikon 581.4, but I tend to look for ultimate bokeh in more controlled portrait settings where the 58 and the 105 come in. For events such as weddings, this 85 Z is a much easier lens to operate where faster actions are required… To sum up, this Z 85 is a great addition. It does not replace my other beauties, but it sure has its place for what I need.
Darren –
What a fantastic portrait lens, lightweight, amazingly sharp and with the eye tracking on Z6 is unbelievable quick at finding the eyes.
Edward –
This lens is awesome I loved it. Its a must when it comes to professional photography.
Kristopher –
What can be said that has not being said about the Z lenses. This lens is well constructed, weatherproofed, extremely sharp and amazing character.
Robert –
I really enjoy the image quality that this lens has been given me coupled with the Nikon z6 works well for both portrait and landscape images
Lee –
Its an excellent lens, protected by the filter. It arrived promptly, in fine condition, although the bubble packing had deflated. Combined with my Z6, it produces fine photographs. I highly recommend it.
Henry –
I was pleasantly surprised at the sharpness and detail this lens captures on my Z6. It is also relatively sharp to the edges and corners at all stops. I like the rendition of the lens. I know rendition is a personal preference thing.I compared it to my 2470mm f4 S. On my Z6, in the very center the two are very close but the leaving the center things change with edges and corners of the 2470mm f4 S being noticeably less sharp. The lens is larger and heavier than I was hoping for a 50mm f1.8 but I am finding it hard to take off my Z6.Over the years, I have owned a lot of 50mm lenses. This one is a cut above.
Ira –
This lens is great for available light photography. A great standard focal length lens thats not only fast regarding exposure, but very fast in focusing. No missed action shots The bokeh is very nice. The antivibration function with the camera, especially when teamed up with a high ISO and moderately slow shutter speed permits hand held shots in low light that would otherwise be impossible to capture. Front element is fairly small in part due the compact nature of the lens and its short rear flange focal point typical of the newer mirrorless DSLR designs. This lens is entirely fly by wire, meaning no direct linkages and no scale readouts on the lens. The one, huge control ring is for manual focus override. Since it is not directly linked to lens elements you cannot do any focus pulls. And all other aspects of the lens can only be controlled from the camera body. If you require direct, repeatable control youll have to buy older Nikon glass and use the Nikon lens adapter for the new Z mount. With this tradeoff you do get a lighter lens with very fast response, well worth the loss of those control rings in most instances. As for optical performance, contrast, color, distortion and focus is extremely good, right up there with the best primes. Im having a lot of fun shooting with this lens, especially with available light even in near darkness. In good light, with lower ISOs the image quality is phenomenal.
Anthony –
Very impressed with this lens. Highly recommend it for portrait shoots.
Kyle –
PROS Small, Light, Picture QualityCONS None for meI got this lens about 2 months ago when it became apparent that the 70200 2.8 was not coming out any time soon. I have been very impressed with this 85s performance Its small and convenient and has a very unique look that both I and my clients are loving. The OOF areas are silky smooth and the subjects are razor sharp. It is really amazing edge to edge.Ill still be getting the native 70200 when it comes out, but until then, this 85 is a fantastic deal if youre looking for native portrait glass on this system. This is my first prime lens at this focal length and it took a couple times out to get use to it, but now its pretty easy to gauge where to stand based on what I need. So be aware, if youve never shot with an 85mm prime before, it is a little different than using a zoom.In the end, I highly recommend this lens for portrait work.
Chris –
If you like the 351.8 and the 501.8, then the 85 will not disappoint. It has the same uniform sharpness as the other lenses, and a delight to shoot wideopen. Ive used it at a wedding and several portrait sessions, and while it takes more technical finesse than the other lenses due to the shallower DOF wide open, the combination of the 85 with the Z6 or Z7 is simply dreamy.
Dave –
Just got this lens to try my hand at portraits as my wife and I have a baby coming soon. Lens feels good on the Z6 and so far portraits have been sharp and flattering, with nice bokeh. Autofocus isnt consistently fast though thats probably more the body and there is a little more vignetting than I expected easily corrected, but those are minor points for this type of lens in my mind. Im only a hobbyist but if youre looking for a portrait lens for Zseries camera this is it.
Anonymous –
one of the best nikon z lens… the sharpness is razor sharp and autofocus is consistent …. this is the sample test shoots…
Brian –
I love this lens. Outstanding sharpness and its a great price. I dont need 1.4 and im happy Nikon released this 1.8 and kept cost down.
baccy69 –
Nice sharp lens. I love using it even though I have to use it manually as I only have a Nikon d3200 with no internal motors for the lens. However I did know this before I bought it.
Tom –
Pros Amazing weather sealing Tack sharp focusCons The perfect lens
Alan –
I cannot rave enough about this lens and of course the camera its attached to. Amazing bokeh and clear sharp images. LOVE IT
Mark –
This is actually my first prime lens. After years of shooting as an amateur with zoom lenses, I decided to take the leap for product photography and professional headshots. My style of shooting is cropped in, so this lens was certainly in my wheelhouse. The colors are great, the lens is very crisp, and the bokeh is great The focusing speed was one thing I was worried about initially, but it has been quite good. It does seem slightly slower, but I have been able to focus on my 3 year old running around and turning her head constantly. So while you will hear and see its slightly slower, I will say that it is still pretty fast on focusing and picking up the eye. Highly recommended
Diane –
Best lens Awesome pictures So happy I decided to purchase it. I had a regular 85mm but the Z is unbeatable. A must have You wont be disappointed.
wiladr2000 –
I did research on this lens for months after I found the rave reviews. Ive been out bidded a couple of times. But with persistence, I finally found one at my price with Buy It Now. And I did. Best thing that happened to me in a while far as shopping goes. It is an awesome lens.
Joseph –
I purchased the Lens mostly for Cinema work, Primes in general are wonderful lenses, This Z system 85mm edition is visually perfect, No chromatic verberation, Sharp edge to edge and blends into a dreamy Blur, My work has never looked better and it is noticed immediately in clips compared to zoom lenses although my 2470mm F4 is equally as sharp and perfect…I coupled it with a 50mm Z lens and my options are plentiful. I love how well it works and communicates with my Z6…the focusing is responsive and tack sharp…it may hunt a little but it takes practice to blend it into your workflow, more my error than than the system, but when you see the results its truly a breathtaking lens and picture, I dito all of this and more in terms of picture quality…worth every penny for a must have beautiful, solid lens for the Z system that I think has the brightest future of any of the other mounts out there…and Nikon is fully invested with this tech coming out with 3.0 firmware that made my Z6 a pleasure to use, keep it up Nikon, great work and an absolutely wonderful lens BH is tops in service
Jos –
Complements perfectly my Nikon Z 6 body. The 50 mm is my preferred lens for almost any situation. I think Ill never put another lens on it. The 1.8 luminosity is great for portraits and gives me high resolution in every picture.
Zachary –
Amazing lens. Purchased just for my photography work. Couldnt be happier. So crisp and the bokeh is perfect.
Kirk –
Having the 35 and 50 1.8 Z lenses this fits in nicely. Pulls your subject right in and has very nice separation if kept between 1.8 and 2.8. Very fast focusing and manual focus is smooth as well. Will probably be my go to portrait lens for quite some time.
Bedak –
Another excellent Z lens from Nikon. I find faster lenses much more expressive because I can control the depth of field. My subjects are mostly children. I mostly do videotaping because I get excellent quality if I snatch single frames. Not for enlargements but plenty sufficient for sharing. The attached picture of turkeys is fine JPEG cropped while the picture of a child is taken from a video that was videotaped at HD with 60FPS.
Quinn –
Great lens. Sharp and fast.I have a Nikon Z7 camera and the lens is an excellent addition to my working lenses.
Alex –
Works great for portraits. I havent used it for anything else.
Crivrex –
Best portrait lens. Super sharp, top of the line. Worth it
Steve –
I have been photographing family outdoor activities during these long Summer evenings in low light after sunset. I am amazed at the clarity and sharpness of the images when set at f1.8. I adjust the ISO to use fast shutter speeds that yields shots that almost look as if they were taken in full daylight.
Dennis –
The new Z system of lenses is fantastic for Z camera owners. I have used this 85 for some video work and also for some closeups.
Matthew –
This Nikkor Z 50mm 1.8 S lens is SO good and so fast especially with the Z5s in body image stabilization, that if you appreciate prime lenses vs zooms you cannot just say, Ill live without it. The term normal understates what the angle of view and lack of magnification or distortion means. The angle of view is normal because its basically what the human eye sees, unlike a wide or tele. Yes, it has a much more complicated, interesting and variable history as the normal lens on a 35mm frame but whatever. This one is killer fantastic and can be used for anything from street photography to even certain kinds of portraiture. Buy it and keep it and see how it varies from, say, my other lens the 20mm. But are outstanding and a lifelong investment worth every penny.
Steven –
Ive owned a few 85 1.8G lenses and no doubt its been one of Nikons best. The Z version is a little sharper and a lot more contrasty is that a word . A little more expensive but worth it in my opinion. 85mm is my favorite FL and this one lives up to my expectations. Always looking for a reason to attach it to my Z6.
Link –
I purchased the Z85 f1.8 specifically to photograph my watercolor paintings for the creation of prints. It was a required purchase due to the Z mount on the new Z7. First print outstanding. Second outstanding. The lens performs exactly as I intended and exactly as I expected. Colors came out perfect and zero distortion on the fringes. Excellent clarity and true to form.
Stephen –
An excellent portrait lens. Very good in low natural light.
Luna –
This lens is the softest lens Ive ever used. It can be too soft sometimes and focus on only the nose of a persons face. Definitely my favorite lens out of my collection.
Daniel –
I have been very pleased with this Z mount lens. It is very sharp from edge to edge and corner to corner. I love the way it focuses and am very satisfied with the end results.
James –
As I transition from DSLR D850 to Z7 this lens replaced my 85 1.4G. Pleasantly surprised. Light, fast focus and extremely sharp. Even if or when Nikon produces a 1.4 version, I wouldnt upgrade.
Brian –
This lens completes my prime collection. I wanted something that gives tighter images and more compression for portraiture. This did exactly that. The images are exceptional. Great Lens
g3tluckyp99 –
I recently upgraded to the mirrorless Nikon z6ii with the FTZ adaptor, I didnt think I would need or want to invest in the mirrorless lenses. When I saw this deal, I decided, why not try I am SO SO glad I did If youre on the fence like me, DO IT The sigma arts I have I love, but this lens is even more crispy sharp Its made me want to get a new 50mm and 35mm for the Nikon Z6ii also.
Patrick –
An absolute beast of a portrait lens, for humans and animals alike. The working distance is nice to have, and the sharpness and bokeh of this lens is amazing. A must buy lens for any Nikon ZMount yser
Stephen –
I am extremely pleased with my new Z 50mm lens. The images I have captured are exceptional in color, contrast and sharpness. It has met all my expectations and I am very glad I added it to my collection of Z lenses.
Robert –
works wonderfully for both landscape and portraits, Im very pleased with this lens
David –
A friend suggested the lens to me as a great value for the quality of pictures. I used the lens and was astonished at how fast the lens focused. The pics in low light had great results. On one other note, the glass on the lens is excellent. Would recommend it to a friend.
Neil –
This lens is razor sharp and great addition to the line of Z lenses. It does an amazing job with portraits and nice backdrop.
Ashwani –
Ive been using the Niikor Z 50mm 1.8S for a few days now and have been testing it. Instead of listing the specslist, here are the top three features of this lens that jumped out the most1. Image quality Strikingly beautiful due to Nikons color science and exceptionally sharp edgetoedge thanks to good distortion control, color aberration control, and vignette control. 50mm is a great focal length for street, portrait, landscape photography, and this lens is wellsuited for most of the types without a doubt. For a f1.8 aperture, the image quality is at par with some of the f2.8 lenses out there. However, if its bokeh out of focus background and foreground youre looking for, this Nikkor does well and not as good as some of the f1.4 or f1.2 lenses. Thats just physics Overall, the image quality is THE reason you should get this lens for your Z camera body, perhaps the very first lens to invest in. It will last decades2. Focus breathing for those of you into videography, youre in for great cinematography in the form of virtually nonexistent focus breathing. Remember how in movies and TV shows things that emerge into the scene from out of focus to infocus Lenses that focusbreathe tend to distort the subject coming into focus seeming like everything including the subject is coming closer as you focus in. Well, nothing like that happens with the Nikkor 50mm 1.8S. Subject and the background remain where they are with only the focus going in and out. Its just beautiful. I am not a videographer but I can imagine how well this lens will perform in such situations. In addition, the focus ring on this lens is made of metal and has a good throw, and is super smooth reminding me of my Voigtlander 58mm 1.4 SL II lens.3. Cameralinked customization Assuming you will use this lens of Z body obviously, the lens makes use of two of the most important features from my perspective in body image body stabilization 5axis IBIS and the ability to customize the focus ring to do other things than manual focus. This is gamechanging, to say the least. The lens doesnt have image stabilization VR vibration reduction but impeccably uses Nikon Zs IBIS and its super important to get steady vibrationfree images. Quick tip even with IBIS, make sure to keep the shutter speed above 150th of the second to get really sharp images. Secondly, the focus ring customization. You can make the focus ring change the aperture settings or change the shutter speed or my current setting change exposure compensation. It makes the process of making images so much more enjoyable and convenient. In summary, two words aptly describe this lens worth it

Like any professional wedding and family photographer, Ive got war stories of my gear taking some serious damage. After damaging my old Nikkor 85mm f1.4g lens beyond repair at a wedding, I was presented with a dilemma repurchase that same lens, or buy the new ZSeries 85 f1.8 S lens. The old Fmount 85mm lens produced some wonderful color and contrast, and the bokeh afforded by the an aperture of 1.4 was otherworldly. Though I hardly ever shot at 1.4 during daytime because there was so much chromatic aberration in strong backlighting. And indeed, that CA stuck around until I closed the aperture down to 2.8. So it meant that the cost of producing beautiful images with that lens was lots of extra time spent editing out CA in Lightroom.I heard that the new Z lenses did a much better job of preventing that chromatic aberration, and that they were far sharper than their counterpart lenses for DSLR cameras. And hey, this one cost about half of the price of the old lens, so I took the risk. Im so glad I did.Im now a couple of weeks into owning my first Z mount lens, and have put it through its paces at a wedding, an engagement session, an event and around my own family life. I use it on my Nikon Z6 camera bodies. Here are my thoughts on itPROSCaptures super sharp images even at an aperture of f1.8Prevents chromatic aberration almost entirely, occurring now only in the harshest lighting situationsWeighs very littlethe lightest of my six lensesCosts less than Id expect for the quality of image Im gettingCONSIll miss being able to open up to f1.4 in low light situationsNo way to mount it on my DSLR bodiesIn conclusion, Im pleasantly surprised by this lens. It performs much better than expected, beating out many of my more expensive zoom and prime lenses. And it leads me to believe that Ill be replacing some of my glass with the other Zmount lenses in the season ahead.
Richard –
All I can say is WOW Light weight, super fast to focus, great bokeh and super sharp. All of this for less than 800.00There is nothing negative I can say about this lens. Another home run for Nikon in the S line of lenses.I shoot professionally and this will be my go to lens for most portrait and headshot work when not using the new 70200mm f2.8 S, coming in a month or two.

The picture quality is a lot better than my f mount lens. I spent an hour on Saturday taking portraits of my granddaughter in her recital costume.

I love this lens. Its super sharp and handles well. I also love the outoffocus Bokeh you can get when shooting wide open. Ill probably use this lens at or near f1.8 much of the time. I used this lens on a Nikon Z 7ii camera and got great results.

Raved reviews everywhere, even comparing with the F mount 50 F1.4 lens. Smaller than the later, but bigger than the F mount 50 1.8. But it is the optics that I am after.

This nifty fifty is more expensive than you might be used to paying for a 50mm prime, but the quality of the glass is top notch. Paired with a Z7, this lens outperforms any 50mm Nikon has made to date. The focus ring feels just right, with the perfect amount of resistance when grabbing it to focus manually, and autofocus is perfect and quiet, even in fulltime AF mode. Whether youre shooting stills or video, this is a mustbuy lens for your Z series camera. Im very optimistic about the future of Nikon Z series lenses if they can keep up with this level of sharpness and quality.
