In the end I felt it was unfair to dock it a * for what was channel 4s problem but I nearly did. Some people have managed to sideload it but I haven’t tried yet. At the moment I’m using the old chromecast tv. The picture and sound are excellent. It was very easy to setup. I bought it to cure buffering I was having on my chromecast tv on most apps even though I have a secure 70 mbs connection and it does. We listen to Digital concert hall a lot (big loudspeakers etc) and appreciate the improved sound quality a lot. The nvidia AI seems to reduce high frequency distortion. The 12gb storage will need expanding if you have security cameras as I do but Ip cam pro works well.

For many, the idea of spending nearly two hundred pounds on a streaming box when you can get an excellent Fire 4k stick or Roku for much cheaper doesn’t make sense. But this is one of those bits of kit that the cognoscenti (who I don’t claim to be a part of) know is a great purchase. I’ve gone from the 4k Fire Stick, to the 4k Fire Cube to this and am happy I made the switch. The first thing against the Fire devices is how many remote controls I’ve gone through – they seem to fail at an alarming rate and when the latest stopped working, I thought I’d try the fabled Nvidia Shield Pro. So what makes it so good? First of all, it’s a sleek looking box that has two USB 3.0 connections and immediately recognised my hard drive – it didn’t need any formatting or software and just worked. Set up was very easy as was the downloading of apps – the one thing I would say is that the Android store isn’t full and there are quite a few missing. That said, the box is easy to side-load with apps and these worked immediately (there’s some very good tutorials explaining how to do this). I set up Plex immediately and, again relying on tutorials, cracked this excellent bit of software quickly. I was soon using the Shield as a network device for my media and was very happy with the speed and response. The Toblerone shaped remote is surprisingly ergonomic and feels good in the hand – Mrs Pugh immediately noticed how responsive it was. The biggest selling point for me, apart from the freedom regarding apps and settings, was the AI-picture enhancer. I could write a long article on this, but others go into it with much more knowledge so I will not go overboard. Needless to say, the 4k enhancer is superb and among the best bits of image processing I’ve ever seen. Other processing software items tend to over-emphasise pseudo-HDR, meaning that older films get this strange, bright, noisy picture that is trying to look modern. As I have an OLED, this look especially bad and as I am evangelical about deep black levels, having this fake, LED wannabe brightness has never impressed me. So when Nvidia claim that this can enhance 1080p to 4k, I was dubious. However, I was VERY impressed! I tried it on films where dark scenes have sudden bursts of light, ‘Blade Runner’, ‘Aliens’ and the like’, and the result was superb. My wife’s K-Dramas have never looked better with detail that look native; it really did wow me with how it enhanced so many different kinds of pictures. That, in itself, makes it worth investment. However, if you are a gamer, there is also the Nvidia App which apparently allows you to play higher end games on it – that gives some idea of the processing power it has. I thought long and hard about buying this, but I’m so glad I spent the cash – it’s added a new dimension to the viewing of films and television and even the sound processing is a big step up. 97 people found this helpful

I reluctantly traded in my 10 year old(!) Fire HDX to take advantage of a £50 Black Friday deal on this newest gen tablet. Apps kept failing on the HDX (of course; it was a dinosaur), but the ads had also long since disappeared and I was still able to use it as a Kindle, to play games, music, browse websites, and watch Netflix and Freevee, AND it still held a charge well! It was time to let it go, but I will really miss it. Why? Because the screen/picture quality of the HDXs of yesteryear were totally unrivalled at that price point, and Gadget Tree has never made a tablet of equal quality again. The inferior display of this new HD8 is therefore quite jarring, but I will get used to it. Possibly related, or just as a result of advances in tech, it is thinner and lighter too, which is particularly nice if you want portability. The colour options are also attractive. The interface is fine, the settings all customisable, and the charge lasts forever. The lock screen ads aren’t intrusive at all. You can disable Alexa voice commands if you wish, but it’s there for those who want it. The best thing about Gadget Tree tablets is the option to link them to your account at the point of purchase, so right out of the box, all your books etc are ready and waiting for you. Unfortunately I did find that my “Actually Free” apps (remember those?!) were absent and I’d have to buy them again, which was a shame, but to be expected I guess. The Silk browser still isn’t the best, and has no ad blocker to my knowledge, so it didn’t take long to decide I’d have to download an APK for a better browser + ad blocker, which is very easy to do. I don’t feel the need to jailbreak further like some reviews suggest, as the selection of apps available from Gadget Tree is more than enough for me. It is exceptionally good value at the deal price if you already use Gadget Tree for books, music, TV, Alexa controlled devices, and so on – otherwise you might be a little disappointed at its limitations. But for those individuals and families who cannot afford or justify the obscene cost of the latest tablet from other big brands, it’s a really fantastic option. I just wonder if it will last as long as the HDX…. 12 people found this helpful

I purchased the 1st version but my wife & daughter were never off it so I was forced to buy another and went for the the Shield pro. It always amazed me how small this machine is and what Nvidia crammed into it. Upgrades are Dolby Atmos/Vision unfortunately I couldn’t make use of the new feature since I own a Samsung Qled which does not support it. Chromecast 4k is a nice feature which I use alot casting my tablet to my shield very useful. Google assistant is second to none probably the best assistant out of them all imho. Because i have 200+ games on steam the nvidia support to stream your steam library was a primary reason why I purchased the 2019 pro model. And boy do the games look stunning in 4k, they also run great and look absolutely stunning on my qled Samsung. I was dazzled by the quality. If you have an extensive steam Library then this machine will allow you to utilize your games in the comfort of your couch, or in my case, my bedroom. It has all the other obvious app support that you expect, prime, netflix and a hjost of others. You have access to the playstore which is handy for installing your apps. Overall it’s a very feature packed machine and for the price it’s justified if you have the content to justify the price. A couple of things which I’m sure will be fixed at some point. I purchased the microsoft elite controller series 2 and whilst it does pair and the thumb controller works for navigation the other buttons do not work as of writing this review. I’m sure there will be an update at some point to give the Microsoft elite controller series 2 full compatibility. I did have to use the previous version control pad to play games and whilst it’s a great controller it’s not the premium quality of a elite series 2. Speaking of which you will need to buy a controller as one is not included with the 2019 pro or standard model. Another thing that has always bugged me about the shield is that the USB 3 ports on the back are too close together which sometimes stops you plugging other devices to the adjacent port if the usb part is too big or an odd shape which sometimes it is with lots of usb sticks, and other usb devices. Bare that in mind. I remedied this by plugging a 6 port usb hub so I could get all my usb devices plugged in. Like I said, I’m very happy with the machine, i was with the previous version. It’s great for what it was designed for and doesn’t try to be anything else. 11 people found this helpful

I’ve owned a few Android TV media players, all based around the MX box design and specifications. They did the job bought for but nothing spectacular. I decided to upgrade as my old MX boxes couldn’t be updated to the next version of Android, and after researching the different makes on the market, I decided on the Nvidia Shield. I’ve had it over a week now, and I have to say, I’m totally blown away by this product. Its so superior to anything I’ve ever owned. I have a Philips Android TV and the Nvidia blows this out of the water! I have researched the Shield via YouTube so had a good idea what was required when unboxing. First off, ease of setting up. Virtually worked straight out of the box, just needed one update. Next, the picture settings. I used the max AI settings which promised upscaling to 4K. Then signed into Google, downloaded the apps I wanted from the Play Store. Signed into Disney and clicked on a Star Wars movie. WOW! The picture and sound quality was totally breathtaking! Crystal clear picture. I am yet to dabble with Dolby Atmos. Its been a week now, and I honestly haven’t anything bad to say about the Nvidia Shield. Its beyond what I expected as an upgrade to my old and tired MX boxes. I’ve even been able to sideload some apps I wanted and these are working perfectly. The only negative I can think of is that there is no apps for All4 and Britbox. A bit of a let down, but the Shield is primarily for my own media TV app and Disney, so no problem with the missing two apps. To finish, the Nvidia Shield is well worth the extra cash and for me, totally superior to anything else on the market at the moment. I’m going to purchase another one for the bedroom, I’m that satisfied with it. PS: So many bad reviews regarding the Nvidia Shield and using media apps like Netflix and Ipeeteevee via it, most stating they experience buffering, freezing etc . I bet you a chocolate bar, the majority who experience this use their Shield wirelessly. A wired device is your best friend when streaming. Wireless, regardless of the speed of your internet coming into your house can be utter pants if you have multiple wireless devices using your router at the same time. Wired is best for streaming! 18 people found this helpful

U can throw any sound format at it and along with kodi or plex it’ll do it with ease . Even tho its 6 years old its really quick and u can install most apps u want from Google play store or sideload with apk . U even can play games on it which will be my next test . The ai upscaling is way better than any tv processing does . My only gripe is the remote . My fat fingers keep selecting netflix or the wrong button from time time but it’s still OK. If u want more outta ur streaming device and be pleased as punch just buy this . Well done nvidia 3 people found this helpful

This is the absolute best Android box and it’s significantly improves the quality of the visuals from your TV. It’s very easy to use and has lots of function including being able to upscale content delivered through this. The build quality of the actual box is good and sturdy, and for this particular model you need a USB storage device such as a hard drive or USB stick rather than a microSD card. It has an ethernet cable HDMI in USB in. I have noticed that it can occasionally freeze but this is not very common at all about once every couple of months and I’ve noticed that not with this device but with the smaller cylindrical shaped shield and it is something to do with the micro SD card because when you remove that there is no freezing. Over this device would have better stability due to the use of USB compared to micro SD. 5 people found this helpful
