Terrific lens. Performed exceptionally well, and I found it quite sharp. The limitation of aperture did not trouble me at all, as I needed increased DOF and would not have used a larger aperture even were one available. I was amazed how lightweight the lens really is Reading its specs and holding it aloft for birds in flight are two different things. It is a lens I have put on my future wish list Eve Turek

If youre looking for one long lens that can do it all, this is it Ive used Nikon primes 400 2.8, 500 4, 600 4 as well as the earlier version the 200400, and this one blows the 200400 out of the water. Sharpness, clarity, color, you name it, it excels. Ive shot Major League Baseball for over 30 years, so I have a good feel as to what works well and what doesnt. The builtin 1.4 teleconverter is sharp, easy to use, and just adds to the overall positive experience when using this lens. Pricey Sure… But if you are looking for ONE lens that can do it all, this is it

I had to wait almost six months to receive this lens but it was well worth the wait. I already own the newest Nikon 400mmf2.8 and the Nikon 180400mmf4 along with the 1.4,1.7, and 2.0 Nikon teleconverters. After a few weeks of field testing, I can confidently say that the Nikon 500mmf5.6 is, in every way, one of Nikons sharpest lenses ever made. It is super sharp wide open, from corner to corner. For those wanting to photograph birds, this lens will get you more quality images than you ever thought possible. This comes from 1 the small size, which means you will take it with you more often, and 2 its ability to give top notch images with any of Nikons teleconverters.I especially want to emphasize how well this lens works with the teleconverters. Though focusing is a bit compromised, if you are just trying to get that shot of a reasonably still bird, you will be shocked at how well this lens performs with TCs. Best camera match is the new Nikon Z6 or Z7.

Ive had the 5oo PF about a week now and find that its lighter than my 200500mm lens and easier to carry and use. It also focuses quicker. My wife doesnt use the 200500 lens because it weighs 5 lbs. The 500 PF weighs almost 2 lbs. less and isnt as bulky. I hope shell be able to use it too. Im hoping to get sharper images with it, but havent had much of a chance yet.

Image quality and build quality are on the same level as the 10K superteles. Ive used a 500 f4 AFS for 20 years and I need to lighten my gear so this one really gets the job done. In good light it will work with the TC14 but the AF hunts too much in low light conditions IMHO. Super fast AF on my D500. As far as build quality, my only nit is the usual subpar Nikon lens foot. I chose the Wimberley AP500 and it is rock solid and extremely well made. I highly recommend this lens.

Im an amateur birder and have been using a 200500mm zoom, which is great for nottoodistant shots in full daylight, but that lens begins to disappoint when birds are further away or in shadow. Thought Id buy this lens to see if it helped. Wow. It helps. The first thing you notice with this lens is the focus speed. My prior lens moved into focus quickly, I thought. This lens just IS in focus. Sure, it takes a while to cycle out and back if you lose focus on the silhouette of a bird and the focus dot hits the mountain a mile away, but if the bird is merely hopping from one branch to another in a tree, focus change is pretty much instantaneous as you follow the bird. Not so with the cheaper lenses With them you acquire focus with this lens you simply have focus. The next issue is image quality. Do the birds you really want to photograph always seem just a little too far away Do your flying raptor shots turn out grainy and you wonder how those guys on the Internet get that hawks eye so crisp and clear Well, if you had this lens you wouldnt have to wonder. Its only a 500mm like my prior lens, but this lens milks quite a bit more out of that 500mm. It also works great with teleconverters if you need more than 500mm worth of reach. With my old lens, birdsinflight shots were mostly for large birds, like herons. This lens locks focus so quickly you can get flying shots of much smaller birds. Its nearly impossible to find this lens used Nobody who has one would want to part with it. I attach two sample photos. I guestimate the hawk was taken at 170 feet cropped, obviously. I include the green heron to show whats possible hand held using a 1.4x teleconverter. You lose some quality shooting 700mm hand held, but I couldnt walk on water to get closer. There is only one excuse for a birder not to own this lens It is a tad expensive. I hand carry it on a Black Rapid strap, which beats fumbling with a monopod or tripod.

This lens is 3 lbs. lighter than its predecessor and the weight is better balanced at the foot area and so is much easier to manage and to use hand held. Autofocus is excellent even with the 1.4x teleconverter attached though not so with the TC20 teleconverter. The foot has not provision for mounting to a head with a ArcaSwiss type clamp which is amazing for Nikon to continue to ignore. I attached a Wimberley P50 plate to the foot to resolve the problem. This plate is 6.6 inches long and i needed that length to balance the lens with either a D850 or D500 camera attached. The Really Right Stuff foot is too short at 6.0 inches to be of any use. The new type of case provided by Nikon is another step backwards by them. It looks like an improvement over the trunk case but the reality is that it is cheaply made with cheap latches and it has no top blocking to secure the lens inside only a Velcro strap and it omits the internal compartment for storing a drop in CPL filter for the lens. I will be buying a Pelican case so as to have a way to safely travel with this lens. Having had a loaner lens from NPS that was badly misaligned from bouncing in transit I know that this lens does need proper support to keep it in good operating condition.

I thought this would be my wildlife dream lens. I currently shoot with a D850 and Nikkor 200500, which is an excellent combo, but its heavy. The 500PF is very compact and light, such a joy to carry. I did some minimal testing, and the sharpness is good, but I dont think its sharper than my copy of the 200500. To be fair, Ill call it a tie. The AF seemed faster, so no issues there. The tripod foot is pretty small and thin, and not comfortable if you try to use it as a handle. The bad news is, it appears to suffer from the same VR problem that many people experienced with the 300PF. At certain shutter speeds, the VR is terrible. Shooting at 180, 1100, and 1125 is not fun. As the shutter speed goes lower or higher, results get better, but there is a definite danger zone to avoid. Unfortunately, I shoot my 200500 at 180 often, and it nails shot after shot. I dont know why these PF lenses have this VR anomaly, but Nikon needs to fix it. This is totally unacceptable for a 3600 lens. Dont get me wrong, the VR will help you get sharp shots at these speeds sometimes, just be prepared to fire off ten in a row. To sum up, it seems like a very good lens IF you dont need VR at specific shutter speeds. The VR cant hold a candle to that of the 200500. Also, from what Ive seen, difference in sharpness between the 200500 and 500PF is negligible. My opinion is, were paying almost 3 times the price for a lens that shaves off 2 pounds and has faster AF but still not super fast. Whether thats worth it to you is the decision youll have to make. Here is an example of a poor shot at 1100 with VR ON. Some turned out much blurrier than this.

This lens is fantastic and light weight relative to its purpose. Focus is EXTREMELY fast, though you have to take care to learn how to best manage focus as it will shift very quickly which is a good thing when you know what you are doing. Added an unedited image taken the first few days with it. Raw though adobe color

As advertised, this is one incredible lens. AF speed is solid, ergonomics are amazing considering the focal length, and the sharpness is excellent from edge to edge. I used this at the USGP in Austin F1, and it was perfect. If youve used the 200500 f5.6, and found it lacking at 500mm like me, then this IS an upgrade in every sense of the word.
