Im a petwildlifeaquaticnature photographer. I bought this lens specifically to take closeups of small fishflowersbutterflieslandscapes. I have taken several hundred pics of my dwarf cichlids and they are FANTASTIC. The pics are sharp, color is great. Got exactly the results I was looking for. I also want to use for outdoor landscapes, waterfalls and florals, but it is too cold for me to venture outside now. If you are considering a macro lens, I highly recommend this one.

Not bad for only a few bucks My images come out great, and its has opened up a new world for me in macro photography. I cleaned it real well when it arrived, its been working great since. Now this is definitely not the top of the line when it comes to these lenses, but this is perfect for me

In my opinion there is not much to dislike about this lens, especially for the price. No it doesnt have VR, internal focus, and the build of other Nikon micros, but then again, it costs only a fraction of what those go for. I have found the lens to be very sharp with good contrast. The autofocus is relatively fast especially if you use the focuslimiter. Using it as a macro, I have been surprised of how well it does lockon to the focus point even when I am near the minimum focusing distance and approaching 11. Using it as a normal 40mm lens, I have no complaints either. For what the lens cost I believe it is a really good bargain especially if you need something with macro capabilities and maybe a shorter focal length. It may not be the best choice for photographing butterflys and insects, but as a lowcost normal lens that goes down to 11, it will the type of lens you almost always have with you.

the main reason I bought this lens was to create my own macrostyle wallpapers for iPhone. And it hit the spot Every weekend I spend an hour to prepare 57 wallpapers for the next week. This lens stimulates my fantasy. Its very nice and simple in use. But dont forget tripod for extremely sharp images. It is also very good for portraites. I have a lot of expirience with Nikkor 501.8 and 351.8. As for me picture quality from 402.8 better and images have it own style..
ERVIN –
Some of us simply need to focus very, very closely to the subject, and for us the 35mm 1.8 DX will never quite do the trick. Thats why God and Nikon pooled their resources and made the Nikkor 40mm f2.8. No sooner did I unbox this lens than I was out the door and on my way to the nearest conservatory to examine the innards of orchids. Wow I could spend hours and days shooting with this small, light, userfriendly little gem and forget to eat and sleep. It is magic for flower closeups. The bokeh is perfect. Is it sharp What a silly question I shot constantly for two weeks with only this lens, and in a variety of situations. Landscape Sure. You can find a way to compose with this angle of view if you give yourself a minute. Table top photography Easy thats where the short length of the lens really becomes an advantage. Portraits Of course Food photography Ill let you know after dinner.

Bought to use with my Nikon D3200 camera. My first micro lens so there was a slight learning curve but acquiring excellent quality images consistently now. Would recommend this lens for anyone looking for a reasonably priced lens without sacrificing quality.
Smiley –
I was looking for a lens I could use for macro photography. I seen this one was on sale and did not break the bank.It does exactly what I need. Since it does not have VR I recommend using a tripod or monopod. I have a 35mm and 50mm, this lens will get you a lot closer. I have included photos I have taken, both macro and landscape
REBECCA –
I wanted a 11 macro and I am very happy with this lens. You do need to be very close to your subject, but many insects dont mind. For flowers with drops of water and small insects like ants and ladybugs it is excellent. The lens is sharp and at F2.8 a 4000 of a second is possible. I used a tripod for the pictures here.
Gary –
Bought this for my wife for Christmas order shipped real quick, well packed. Will be making further orders from this site. Now, the lens very easy to use, results are impressive bearing in mind the cost. If you want to start macro photography, this is a good way to get under way
Boguslaw –
Still learning macro photography but the lens performs very well on my D7500 tack sharp pictures, very easy to handle. Wish it had a little longer focal length 6080 mm for the longer shooting distance from small mobile objects.
coachtim30 –
Im just expanding my skills in photography and wanted an inexpensive macro lens that I could learn that style of shooting from. This little gem fits that purpose extremely well. The quality of shots is really good for a lens this inexpensive. Its easy to use and can also serve as a passable prime lens.If youre like me and want to use photography as a hobby, then this little macro lens from Nikkor is for you.
PADuck –
I am only just starting to test this lens, having taken a few macro shots, and some informal portraits of family during the holidays. Autofocus is quick and quiet and can be overridden with the lens ring without having to adjust cameralens switches, buttons or settings a nice touch. As a 40 year photographer and owner of numerous lenses, I am quite pleased with the sharpness and characteristics of this lens. I use a D7200 most of the time As with all things Nikon, this comes with no owners manual you will have to jump online and snag one from Nikon. Im glad I bought this lens and recommend it.
JoeSand –
Excellent function, for the price. I was between this and the more expensive one, but had to work on a budget. That said, the closeness and detail are wonderful.
ricdi1039 –
Although not the best focal length for a macro lens it puts the front of the lens very close to the subject on a DX body, it works very well on a Nikon 1 system body such as the V2 via the Nikon FT1 adapter. The small size and weight of this lens are a decent match for Nikons discontinued mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras built around the 1 sensor.
PhotoJim –
I shot film for years and the transition to digital was an obvious step. My 35MM camera was a Nikon and since I had several lenses, my new digital was going to be a Nikon also. After getting the new camera, I determined that a new lense would benefit my work. I did a lot of reading and research and the MicroNikkor just stood out as the right choice. Ive used the lense on a dozen shoots and it is an excellent and versitle lense for my camera. Flawless Auotmatic Focus, beautiful quality, and outstanding product
Karl –
I purchased this lens to replace an old Nikon zoom lens with macro capability that I used on a film Nikon. This lens is lighter and much easier to use. While it does not zoom, I have other zoom lenses. The focal length makes it useful to double as a standard lens. It has a large enough aperture to also use for portraits. I have only taken a few pictures so far but it appears to be working as advertised.
Kevin –
Excellent product, near focus is very good, I have been using a ring flash with it with excellent results. So far all experimental and hand held. I am sure once I set up my tripod and do some close up spring flower pictures the results will be awesome. I have used Nikon products for many years and have always been very satisfied. I highly recommend this lens for close up and reproduction graphics also very good with portraits.
rriveroa –
At the beginning I was not very sure to buy a macro lens, I thought that my 50mm was enough for macrocommercial jewelry photography. But thanks god I changed my mind and bought this 40mm and there is a HUGE difference. Great for flowers and commercial photos, for insects you will need a 105mm.
Anonymous –
Continually trying it, and learning how to manage the depth of field. Nice results so far, and easy to use with my D3100. A tip for purchasers is that the lens hood is a bit tight at least on mine when you click it into place. I thought I was forcing it, but then it clicked. So be aware of this or you might think the lens hood does not attach. Im very satisfied with it, and Ive taken some fun food photography with it at about 12 to 15 inches from a plate of food. Really sharp.
Muttonchops –
After using this lens for a while, I find it quite useful. You can go from shooting extreme close ups to general photos without bothering to change lenses. Works well in low light conditions. Its sharp and has good color reception. Love it
LDORet –
Im new to prime lenses in the dslr world am not a professional by any stretch of the imagination. My wife originally bought me the 35mm lens for Christmas and then I exchanged it for the 50mm lens. However, I take more closeup shots of flowers etc. and the 50mm wont let you get in real close. After doing some more research and talking to the great folks at Best Buy, I decided this 40mm macro lens was for me. Great decision. I love it and would recommend it to a friend. My only complaint is that its a f2.8 rather than an f1.8 but hey, one cant have it all. The price was excellent. My next lens will be the 85mm lens.
Steven –
The size of this macro lens was the big draw for me, I have the 60mm and 105mm macro lenses for the full size seor but since I mostly use the DX sensor this lens fix better with my travel gear. So far its sharp, even at 2.8 so I know it will be even better at 8 or higher. Typical rugged Nikon construction and materials.
VINCE –
I am just a amateur in regards to modern photography. Just starting to learn by trial and error . The Nikon 40mm f2.8g is amazing . I went to the San Diego Botanical gardens to shoot some closeups of the flowers blooming as well as the Bees collecting pollen. Unreal photos the first time out, just like the ones in the magazines. The images are perfect with the focus on the subject and the back ground somewhat blurry which looks great. Highly recommend this product in your accessories.
Brett –
I read the reviews of all the Nikkor Micro lenses before purchasing this and I have no regrets. Let me start by saying that the only downside to this lens that keeps me from giving it a 5 star rating is the close focus distance. I shoot uniquely outdoor flower and flora macro with this lens so it is seldom an issue for me. However, if youre shooting indoors or trying to shoot insects, the close focal distance will be an issue for you. Now for what I like. For the money, the lens is very sharp and very versatile. I have a 35mm f1.8 but if I didnt already have it, this 40mm would almost take its place. The f2.8 is variable but that doesnt matter IMO because the difference in aperture makes a minimal difference in nearly any macro situation. The lens is well made for the money and I love the Nikon MMA focusing option which is standard on this lens too. No, this is not a professional quality allaround macro lens. But for south of 300, it is an excellent general use lens and a great natural light macro lens. I would replace it in a heartbeat with the same thing
pmossjr –
This lens can do micro macro photography great If you have kit lenses and you are considering another lens, get this one over the 35 mm or the 50 mm. Hands down much better value. I am very pleased with the lens. If it had some vibration reduction as well, that would be great. Zoom in on the pictures. You can see the pollen and the details in the pistols. With a tripod and better lighting I could have captured more detail.
koneh110 –
As soon as I got these lens, I tried them out inside and outdoors. In both cases I came up with instant winners I took close up photos of my cat and could count the hairs and see the texture of her nose. I took a photo of a yucca plant that came out amazing and I printed it on a 13×19 borderless photo paper. It will be included in my art fair display. I got a great deal on this lens on ebay and received the lens in two days It is highly recommended in my opinion and other who have used it will attest to that as well.
Tom –
Dont think of this as a Macro lens the short focal length means you are way too close. Are you fedup with spending ages in Photoshop correcting the noticeable distortion of your Zoom lens Well leave all that behind with this lensIt is perfect for any photography that needs a Flat Field lens Architectural photography in unconfined spaces. Who needs a Zoom when you can walk back or forward a few steps Art reproduction Product photography especially box shaped objectsIt is also perfect for closeup Food photography where it is supersharp and has great depth of field when used stopped down or it produces creamy backgrounds when shot wide open at its bright 2.8 aperture.
Michael –
I read the online reviews of this lens very carefully before I bought it. It has not disappointed me. On the DX body it is s fast, lightweight, reasonably priced short telephoto with macro capabilities. It may not be the ideal focal length for a macro, but it is a fabulously sharp very versatile lens.
Joe –
This is an amazing lens that just about covers it from macro although you have to get in closer to your subject but that is no problem to portrait to street photography I have been using this lens exclusively for awhile now it is light weight compared to using the big zoom lens. 40mm covers a good range and the pictures are nice sharp and crisp just takes a little practice and patience to get that good macro shot. Overall this is a good buy.
connie658 –
Excellent lens, clear sharp pictures. Great macro ability. Light weight and compact. Could not be happier with this lens. Nice autofocus. Great walk around lens.
Ken –
I wanted a small prime lens to go with my D7100. I thought about the 35mm 1.8 but in the end chose the 40mm 2.8 Micro because it has macro capability and I rather fancied being able to take some macro photographs occasionally. I mentioned my choice of lens and WEX as supplier of choice to my wife shortly before Christmas 2015 and much to my delight she purchased it for me from WEX as a Christmas present. I am delighted with it. It takes wonderful photographs that are sharp and have great colours and the bokeh is good. OK, its not the best macro lens in the world but it suits my needs in this respect.
Jack –
I testeed it on random subjects, blew up some salt grains about ten or twelve times life size which I thought was impressive. I Shot the face of a small figurine so the final file image was full framr about 8 x 10. I use a D 80 and a D 5100, the lens is fully auto on the D 80 but not the D 5100. Im planning to use it mostly for insect photos, and stamp and coin photographs and old photo copying. I think it meets those needs well.
Matthew –
Pros Great price, fantastic prime lens for portraits combined with introduction to macro.Cons Due to the 40mm focal length you have to get very very close to subjects if youre a macro photographer. However if you are a beginner like me and this is your first macro lens you will love it, just dont expect to shoot insects etc as youll scare them off by getting so close.
Ken –
Despite a disappointment with the nomenclature on the lens, Im giving it 5 stars because this lens is amazing as long as you know what youre getting. My disappointment with this lens was my own fault. As a relatively new photographer, my assumption was that all prime lenses lenses with one focal length had one maximum aperture and I thought the 12.8G on the lens label confirmed that thought. Turns out, because this lens telescopes to achieve focus on close subjects, the maximum aperture varies from f2.84.2 depending on how close your subject is. I thought Id have f2.8 no matter where I was focusing, but that is not the case. Again, that was my fault for not realizing it and I suspect that is a factor of this lens affordability. That aside, this lens is awesome. Theres no shortage of bokeh and shallow DOF on extreme closeups. Very sharp, very beautiful images. I can already tell that I will thoroughly enjoy owning this lens.
Phil –
I bought this specifically to copy slides with the Nikon ES1 and my D7200. It works perfectly for that even though Nikon does not specifically recommend it. No other adapters or rings needed. I already have the Nikkor 105 VR, so I was going to sell it when Im done copying slides. But…I may keep it. It makes a super compact and light 40mm 60mm equivalent f2.8 on a DX camera with 11 capability. I did not give it 5 stars only because the barrel extends when you get into close focus, unlike the 105 which is internal. But…its 13rd the price so what do you expect Good value
jessica.b –
Started getting into photography. I was riven a set several years ago. Love this camera and how easy it is to use. This lens makes some great photos happen
Jorilo –
I liked this lens, but I didnt have a full understanding about its uses. It would have been better to go into a store and get a little bit of an education on it before I bought it. Not exactly what I was thinking about it when I bought it. Still really good lens
Crocker –
I had been thinking of going to a fixed focal length lens for a while and when I saw that Nikon had a 40mm micro for less than 200 my mind was made up I doubt that this lens will appeal to the serious macro photographer as you have to get to close to the subject to achieve true 11. It is however a fantastic lens to teach you the basics of macro without breaking the bank and it is perfect to use as standard lens. The optical quality is brilliant as you would expect from Nikon. The build quality is good for the money but not as good as more expensive macro lenses. The photo I have uploaded is of a pile of cheese crumbs left overs from xmas shot with my D5100 at f32 130th using bounce flash from my SB700 on camera with A4 paper acting as reflectors.I used the lens in manual focus as ive always found AF struggles to find focus when shooting macro, but this is probably a problem with my technique rather than camera or lens.Do yourself a favour, buy this lens
Steve –
I bought this lens specifically to digitize color slides using my D300. It does a spectacular job. I have used it for other photographs and it has performed beautifully.
PhotoPete –
I used this on my D3400 and found I was able to focus on small objects down to just a couple of inches away even in low light conditions. The images stood up to extreme magnification and were in focus all the way to the point where I could see individual pixels. All in all the best macro lens Ive owned and great value for the price.
Carl –
I use this as a general purpose lens on a Nikon D5500. It is a lightweight, sharp, handy lens to have. The front element is recessed enough that I dont use a lens shade or filter. It is nice being able to focus closer than a normal lens allows you when you have to and I find the f2.8 reasonable to work with since the newer cameras are excellent at higher ISO settings. I also use a 35mm 1.8 and a mid range zoom but this is the lens that is on the camera most of the time.
jerryDX40 –
Pros Flawless autofocus, Manual focus very easy, Lightweight, Short overall lengthCons Narrow depth of fieldOther thoughts The depth of field is a fundamental property of the lens and fstop. The manufacturer has little control over this, but prospective buyers should not be surprised to see some blurry images. In some circumstances it is necessary to use manual focus because the autofocus may select the wrong plane. Also, this is not a zoom lens the camera must be moved to adjust image size.
Suzanne –
I am a jewelry designer and was looking for a lens to take photographs of my work. I bought this lens to use with my Nikon D3200 and was blown away with the results. I tend to shoot all my photos using diffused natural lighting, and could not be happier with the final images.
Melinda –
This lens has proven to be a great one to capture the tiniest features of my newborn grand baby. Tiny fingers and toes are only this tiny once in a lifetime. I have them forever captured with this great prime lens.
Legendarme –
I love that lense. Beautiful colors, light and quality on close portraits, micro and food photography. Easy to use. Feel of high quality.
Lindsey –
Best lens I ever purchased I love macro photography and got a lens ball that this works great with .
bekka.s –
I love my 40mm lens It is great to use for close up photography of bugs or flowers, whatever you prefer to photograph with this lens. It does a great job of capturing and has awesome bokeh I would definitely recommend if you are looking to get a micro lens
Ivan –
It takes fantastic pictures. Its so much fun learning the best angles for macro photos and just mastering the controls.
John –
I have attached this Micro Nikkor 40mm f2.8 lens to my Nikon D7500 and it delivers ultrasharp photos. Highly recommended for those who like to get in real close to small insects, etc.
Grafikus –
I bought this lens as my general purpose replacement for the jit lens on my D7200 as well as for macro slide duplication. It clearly shines as a macro lens, a little bit short. Macro images are particularly beautiful. Inexpensive, sharp focusing and good contrast make this a useful DX lens.
Jeeper –
Wanted to have something to shoot macro but didnt want to spend a lot. This fit the bill. Only down is you need to be pretty close to the subject and the manual focus is easier then auto focus but overall for what I wanted this works
Katlin –
Im a beginner product photographer, and the 105mm Nikon micro lens was way too expensive for me. The 40mm offers me everything I need for my business and its the perfect price point without sacrificing quality. I use this with my Nikon D5600 and love it.
CashForGoldandJewelry –
I am in the jewelry business. My primary business is buying from the public. I routinely put signature pieces on my online store for resale. I used a Sigma Macro lens with a Nikon D40 then the D90. When I upgraded to the D5100 the pictures just did not look right. I professional photographer friend suggested this lens. The pictures are coming out better than ever. I would highly recommend this lens for closeup Macro work.
Steve –
Purchased the lens to use as a macro lens with my D7000s. Love the size and weight of the lens. So far very happy with the lens for close up work and portraits. As sharp or sharper then my Nikon 85mmf1.8. Although it is not as solid. Will see how it holds up. Recently took on a trip to Alaska, very pleased with the performance. Will use in my portrait and wedding business.
Steven –
For closeup and stilllife work this lens fits the bill perfectly. Very sharp output, and no fringing or other color issues that Ive seen. Nice bokeh, too. Its also good not great as a fast generalpurpose lens, although with the 1.5x crop factor on my D7100 its obviously not a sweeping landscape or family reunion group photo lens. Its solid yet light, and is wellbuilt. Two things First, I dont know if its the lens or my unfamiliarity with the D7100 its new to me, but in any mode but full auto, the focus point always seems to be weighted to the left side of the frame and jumps around quite a bit no matter what Im shooting. Second, as theres no vibration damping, I recommend using a tripod with this lens.
Brett –
I purchased the 40mm as a daily lens with macro capability for my Nikon D7000. Focus is fast, accurate and quiet at both minimum focal length and infinity, however it hunts a little bit in VERY low light. Infinity picture quality is incredibly sharp at f4f5 sharpest of all my lenses, even more than my 35mm and 60mm, while macro is sharpest from f4f11, depending on the Depth Of Field you want. DOF is incredible with amazing and pleasant Bokeh. I have taken a few hundred photos with this lens so far and I am more than satisfied.

By nonphotographer we imply that we do not do professional work. BH was suggested by a major camera store in Texas. I had looked at several brands of cameras and settled on Nikon only to learn they did not have the macro lens I felt I wanted. A call to BH connected me with a most helpful gentleman. He even put up with my unintelligent questions and responded with most helpful answers. Because I had no experience with a SLR camera, I followed his suggestions and ordered the 40mm f2.8G AFS DX MicroNikkor lens. I am most pleased and amazed at the quality of photographs I am able to take. We use the lens when photographing electronics circuits for technical material we produce. Some are so small that I am not able to read them clearly 5 times the size of a head of a pin. We are able to get within centimeters of the components and the camera and lens will still auto focus to perfect clarity. Something we have been unable to do with my point and shoot camera with auto focus. My work looks better, my articles appear more professional and we get very favorable comments about the booklets. If we are asked about anything we feel is not so great, perhaps that would be fear of dropping the lens and damaging the interworkings when we need it most That, of course, has nothing to do with the quality or capability of the lens. The advancement in years tends to make one a bit clumsy got a soft foam rubber floor covering for those like me I must conclude by saying, the Nikon camera and the MicroNikkor Lens is perhaps the best purchase I could have made for my attempt to be an author
Ninjadragon –
This is an awesome prime lens from Nikon. I chose this for low light for doing astronomy, ghost hunting and close up of flowers. 50 mm lens tend to be too big for group photos. Very easy to use as automatic.
Jen –
This is my first Micro Lens. I cant compare it to others similar, but I can say that it is fantastic for shooting really up close. I am a fine jewelry designer and photograph my jewelry. The detail and the diamonds look MUCH better shooting with this lens than with the standard lens that came with the Nikon D40X. The pic below of my logo is not really legible to the naked eye. And the price is fantastic
Ben0729 –
This lens is a good first macro lens, without a doubt you get what you pay for. If you want a beautiful macro lens get the 105mm, if you cant afford that then its fine. Get this lens if you want to try macro photography or just want a smaller macro lens.
Grandpa Scuba –
I havent had this lens for very long, so I cant go into great detail about its features. But for the short amount of time Ive had it, I like it. Its a 40mm prime lens. Meaning it is not a zoom. A 40mm DX lens is about a 60mm FX lens. Its pretty fast, f2.8. But the main feature, of course is the macro setting. The lens has a focus range switch. At Full you get the macro focusing. And it is very close focusing. The specs on the Nikon website say the minimum focus is .53ft, but this must be in the nonmacro range. I was focusing down to less than 1 inch. Other features of note. It is very light weight. It has a metal lens mount. Can be used as a normal lens for folks who like a slightly telephoto normal. I would definitely recommend this lens to anyone who has a need for a lens of this type.
ROBERTO –
In my dx camera renders as a 80mm 2.8. No distosion I can see, very sharp, good contrast and fast enough. Too close to the subject if you want really macro photos 11, so that the lens interferes the light, but ocassional macro snapshots may be done if you take care of that, with excellent results. Compact and light, so that it is fighting the place in my travelling bag with my 50mm 1.8.
Robert –
Using for light box work. OK results on auto but better results on manual in light box application. Will take a lot of experimentation to get the best results. Very reasonable price
lbcoz –
I have been using a zoom lens on my D300. I find that most of the photography I do is close up, nature photography. Yes a zoom helps me get zoomed in on the subject but since most of the things I take pictures of are flowers it is better to be able to get close. The 40 F2.8 allows me to fill the picture with my subject as well as giving me ample light to work with for depth of field. The lens is light so it makes woking with the camera easier. I have enough pixels in each shot that I can do post zoom work with Photo Shop so now I have an excellent combination of portability and performance. Great lens. Some people do not like that the lens has some plastic parts. I trust Nikon and there is nothing about the lens that seems cheap, plus that the plastics of today are not the cheap product of past days. The lens feels and looks well made.
abadernest –
This is an excellent camera lens, it is actually better than what I expected it to be. I was surprised at the clarity of the details on my close up shots. The use of it is a lot easier than most of the lenses out in the market today. My only dissapoinment was its price because it a little bit over priced. Although I wouldnt trade this lens for any other close up lenses available out there today. If you need a real good close up lens the without a doubt this the best one to get out there.
bkfrom49 –
I bought this primarily for macro photography and have not been disappointed. The lens does a great job capturing fine detail in perfect focus. Like all macros, it requires patience in setting up the shot depth of detail is very small. I have also used this for a few regular shots and have been equally pleased. Good addition to the camera bag if you like macro.
12Bunny –
This lens works great. Takes crystal clear photos with my Nikon D7200. I have used it a lot for botanical shots, works wonderfully. It is a very economically priced piece of equipment that yields fantastic results Definitely recommended
Al –
In addition to this lens, I have a Tokina 100mm macro. I bought this lens for macro use when on travel as the 100mm lens is heavier and bulkier, especially when coupled with the NIkon R1 speedlight system which I dont use on this lens as the short lens barrel allows easier use of a SB700 speedlight. I tend to use this lens more in the close up range rather than true macro, as like all short focal length macro lenses, you would have to get really close. But for travel use I can work with the short focal length easily, and is sure packs into my camera bag a lot easier.
The Photo Hopper –
I wanted a macro lens that didnt break the bank so I looked at this 40mm. I dont do much insect or animal macro photography so the lack of a zoom function does not bother me. Using this macro in a studio setting as well as in nature for stills has yielded some very nice and sharp images. It has also shown to be a very nice addition to my portrait arsenal. It becomes very easy to achieve the blur background effect that portrait photographers love. Its always nice to have lenses with versatility. I would recommend this product for anyone who is venturing into the world of macro photography unless you need zoom for those easily scared bugs and such. If you end up not really enjoying the style it can be used still as a everyday shooting lens.
Leonard –
Im relatively new to the digital realm having disposed of all of my analog gear a little over a year ago. The weight or lack of on this lens is impressive as is its sharpness in capturing images. The folks at Nikon have maintained their quality control for the glass in this lens and its pure Nikon tradition. Im pleased with my purchase and look forward to exploring its many options.
Kath –
A great lens. Its easy to use, and build an amateurs confidence. I had to go twice to Best Buy to pick up the item. The ship to store was a little sketchy.
sharpiewashere –
I bought this lens specifically for flower and macro nature photography, but I find it works great for abstract and walkaround photography. Even makes a great little portrait lens. You can get as close as you want or need and still have everything in perfect focus. Be aware that the front element does move in and out, so it could hit whatever you are trying to focus on. Works okay in low light, but not as great as the 35mm. Either way, very nice lens.
Paul –
I bought this lens for use with my Nikon D7100 and the most important quality I was looking for was sharpness. This lens is SHARP Whether I use is for portraiture or macro work, I will be immensely satisfied with the results

I bought this macro lens to use on my Nikon D500 with the Nikon ES 2 slide and film digitizer. The lens is tack sharp and is a perfect match for the ES 2 digitizer which enables side and film conversion far more quickly and easily than using a conventional scanner.
JCThroughTheLens –
I love this lens. Its small, great range and ridiculously sharp images. The macro capabilities are amazing as well.
Abraham –
Dont listen to all the hate the gearheads give this lens the results are fantastic. It has beautiful bokeh, its sharp wide open at any focusing distance, virtually distortion free, and it has a razor thin depth of field at 11 magnification. The only drawback is color fringing beyond the plane of focus the foreground will have magenta fringing and the background will have green fringing. noticeable only in very few circumstances Tech freaks will tell you its a bad lens without ever laying a hand on it because at 11 the front element will be 3cm away from your subject and block your lighting because all they know how to do is use their popup flash. Put your speedlight in commander mode and get creative or just buy a Nikon R1C1 kit and youll have beautiful macro shots at a bargain price

This lens is amazing. Cant beat the price. Picture quality is great Been able to take better pics with awesome details.
Frances –
I do not know a lot about taking photos. My attempts at taking quality photos of my jewelry was difficult. I got this lens, and I love how it gets the detail I was missing before
Andrew W. –
You dont hear much about this lens. While the 35 1.8 is widely recommended, the 40 is only occasionally mentioned as a great walkaround lens. But the 40 has some great attributes. Its relatively light, has little distortion, is plenty sharp on modern high density sensors Im using it on a D71K and while they call it a micro I tend to use it as walkaround lens with close focus capabilities. Its great for capturing small architectural details then stepping back and shooting a street scene. But you have to like the 60mm FX equiv focal length which I do.
mtbgirl –
This is a great close up lens for Nikon DSLR owners. Especially those looking to widen their lens collection, the beginner. Great for flowers, portraits, food, etc. The manual focus is great. The clarity on close up objects is great as well. With the sharp pictures, color and contrast, you will definitely want to pick up this lens, I mean, you cant beat that price.

After reading many of the reviews here, I was leaning toward getting the 40mm f2.8 MicroNikkor as a birthday gift from my wife, but I wanted to talk with the BH staff about macro lens use and get a recommendation. Steve showed me the four Nikkor macro lenses. He said that the key factor was how far away from my subjects I expected to be. He pointed out that my 18300mm zoom Nikkor could function as a quasimacro lens at full zoom. I tried the 40mm macro and the 105mm VR macro, both f2.8 lenses. Largely because of price I decided on the 40mm, with the idea that I would try it out on the High Line elevated garden that very morning and decide whether I wanted to keep or return it. Im keeping it. After using my lovely but heavy zoom lens with my D7100 for a year, I appreciated the lightness of the 40mm. The camera is also less conspicuous with the smaller lens, so candid photography was easier. I was able to get very close to the flowers I was photographing, making some perspectives possible by leaning over that would have been impossible if Id had to be further from my subjects. What really impressed me after loading the pics into Aperture was how good many of the images looked when enlarged. See the two enlargements below for examples. I used autofocus with normal program P metering on the flower pic and manual focus with aperture priority A metering on the bee pic.

This lens is a winner…much, much more than I bargained for. If you love macro and also the ability to shoot with a 40 mm lens…YOU WILL LOVE this lens. Outstanding for Nikon…and an excellent price. Shoot like the pros with this small wonder. You will be amazed at the results. If you are thinking 35 or 40 mm…go with this lens…you will not be disappointed.
Mark D –
Im an amateur but I love taking close ups. I had a set of extension tubes that let me get macro shots, but not nearly as easily as this. Focusing is not an issue with this lens. It seems to lock on wherever I point it with spot metering turned on. Ive yet to experience the focus hunting so often reported with this budget lens. The only downside is the very short working distance if you want that 11 ratio. But since I dont really shoot things that move all that much, its not a problem yet.
Justin –
I purchased this lens to take close detail shots of small collectibles. It is very easy to use and perfect for my needs. Really nice image quality. Shipping from BH was incredibly fast as always.
Andrew V –
I love to take pictures of flowers and this lens allowed me to get really close to the subjects. I also used this lens to convert over 800 Ektachrome slides from the 1970s and 1980s using the Nikon ES1 slide copying adapter. This was an easy process and produced very sharp copies.
EditReject –
I do not do much Macro photography but I wanted to expand in that area without having to invest in an expensive Macro lens. This 40mm MicroNikkor for the DX format fits the bill You are able to get inches away from your subject with this lens and the images are super sharp. The build quality is solid and almost reminds you of the 35mm 1.8 DX lens, just a bit longer but still very lightweight. If you are debating on whether to get the 40mm or the 35mm, I say go with both if you can afford it. While the 35mm 1.8 is a great all around prime lens, you cannot beat a dedicated Macro lens like the 40mm and Nikon has made one that I have no doubt budget minded shooters will appreciate.
Samson –
This has been my favorite lens yet. Can get up close and personal . Great for my needs
JamesinLittleSilver –
After a lot shopping I bought this to go with my D3100 camera. It is a perfect entry level macro lens. I used it as my one lens at the PHS flower show. It was good for not only standard size shots right down to very small flowers. I have looked at all the other entry level lens and I think this one is the best value for the money. Add in Best Buy member rewards and sale and it was the best deal I could find.
pcfotodoc –
The 40mm Micro Nikkor supplies a very sharp image at just over normal lens focal length. Great bang for the buck

I bought this as I wanted a macro lens within my price range and this was priced lower than comparative lens. I love using it. Great macro, ease of use, quiet and although I am still learning this has given me some great proffessional looking shots. I would thoroughly recommend buying this if you are considering purchasing a 40mm. Great product at a great price.

As a Semipro photographer who has shot over 100,000 thousand pictures using a Hasselblad Lunar, Canon 5DS R, Canon 6D, Canon 7D, and now a recently purchased Nikon D7200. Along with the acquisition of the D7200, I also purchased a Nikkor AFS DX MicroNIKKOR 40mm f2.8G Lens for its macro capability. I used the AF function on the lens to test the accuracy of its silent wave motor. From the onset, the lens has rendered beautiful and clear pictures as the two attached photos demonstrate. Nikon has deliver a quality macro lens at an affordable price that macro photographers will love.
Geoffrey –
Great lens but lens hood is a great disappointment. The supplied lens hood does not lock and is so lose one would think it was for a different lens. B and H was was great about replacing lens but replacement was no different. Nikon claimed I was the first complaint about this issue. So bring tape if you plan on free hand shooting to keep the lens hood on the lens. Thats the only reason I dont give it five stars.
TheBat –
One of the best purchases Ive ever made Ever since I bought this lens, I have rarely ever taken it out. I use it for closeup shots this definitely does the job When you do wider shots, you get beautiful bokeh. Highly recommend for anyone interested in Macro photography or even Portrait photography if you want a nice bokeh
BobCanoe –
The 40mm f.2.8 G AFS DX MicroNikkor lens is a compact and sharp macro lens capable of 11 reproductions ratios with no need for extension tubes. The lens is lightweight and performs flawlessly throughout its entire focusing range. It doubles as a nice normal lens. I also use a 105mm MicroNikkor lens, which affords a greater operating distance, but the 40mm lens is a lot less cumbersome, especially if you dont need to get in too close.
Richard –
I was using the 105 mm macro with my film based Nikon FE2 SLR. When I switched to digital D5100, the old 105 macro was not compatable for auto use. So I ordered the 40mm macro. This 40mm lens must be too close to subject for good dental clinical closeups. I would get the 85mm or 105 macro if for dental or plastic surgery photos. May consider the Tokina 100mm macro also. The 40mm is okay for portraits, just not closeups.
httpJared –
Not as fast as the 50mm f1.8 but still a fantastic little lens with the added bonus of being capable of macro. Im having a lot of fun with this and its tiding over my macro urges until I can get the 105. Having a longer focal length would be great but this being a 40mm and producing pretty good bokeh its also a great walk around lens.
bill –
I have owed and shot the Nikon, 200, 100, and 60 mm micro lenses. I would say, for the money, this Nikon AFS DX MicroNIKKOR 40mm f2.8G Lens is the best in its class. That is, in the 40 mm micro class. It is exceptionally light and easy to use. If I was just starting my trip into Micro, this would be the first lens I would buy. Now, that said, when using this lens you have to get much closer than with the Nikon 200 mm. So, if your photographing snakes, bees, or other stingers you may want to consider a longer micro. But for flowers and other general close up work, this is a great lens. I have always loved my 60 mm micro and will always use it for product photography. But now when I am in the field shooting landscapes, this lens will now find its way into my bag containing the Nikon 1424 and 1635 landscape lenses. The 40 mm has outstanding Image Quality and depth of field is super when stopped down. So, if your beginning your adventure into Micro, this lens is a great way to start. You will not be disappointed.
Nancy –
Totally compatible with my old camera. Easy to use. Great for closeups of flowers. For the price, the lens quality is fine for my purposes.
anniebananny64 –
This is my favorite lens ever. The image quality is superior. The depth of field is exactly what i need. The product is very durable and in excellent shape. Thank you for helping me to advance my passion as a photographer. Nothing but smiles here

Ive wanted a Macro lens for a long time to bring some additional enjoyment to my casual photography. While purchasing my new D5200, I decided to order this lens, too. From the very first shot, I was pleased with the purchase…its great for getting up close and personal with many subjects while also being versatile for general photography tasks that are often handled by a typical 50mm fixed lens. Despite having a great Nikkor 70200 zoom lens nearly always on my camera, this one will be worth the effort to carry with me, too.
MDSantos –
I use this on a new D7100. It has proven to be my favorite lens so far, it takes great profile and portrait photos. It worked great in low light, though it is SLOW to focus. I did manage to get a few good pictures at the National Aquarium. I was surprised how well it did in low light, though I had my ISO set at 6400 most of the visit. I would buy this lens again, I only gave it 4 stars because it is slow especially at a fast paced rate like viewing a very busy aquarium on the weekend. I have attached a few pictures, one a portrait taken quickly, and the others are at the aquarium. All are UNEDITED. Again, I used a new D7100.
Tiffany –
Not sure why I waited to long to actually buy this lens Its all the 50mm which I also love was lacking. Both have different functions of course, but this is a winner. Excellent portraiture lens, excellent outdoors, amazing bokeh Couple with the SB910 or SB900 for amazing indoor shots as well. Im looking forward to using this as my primary lens during an inhome wedding Im shooting next month. The focal length and aperture should serve me excellent in this setting.
Michael –
Before this lens, I used to photograph jewelry and then magnify the images in my editing software. It worked ok, but after switching to this lens, the jewelry images I got look so much better right from the start The details in the pieces really pop now I would recommend this lens to anyone who needs a high quality, easy to use closeup lens.
Photo Nut –
I use this lens for close ups of flowers, insects, many other shots. I am 69 years old many years ago I had a 35mm camera with all the lenses it took nice shots, for my close ups I used the 3 attachment screw on close up lenses, but this is a lot better than trying to figure out what of the 3 I needed. I use this with my Nikon D3100 it works perfect. For the average shots I take I usually use the 40mm f2.8 AFS DX MicroNikkor Lens. I have to say I wish they had all this digital stuff when I was younger, I would probably be a Pro Now, but I am just average at it all. But would recommend this lens to anyone for the price, there is no way it could be beat.
Charles –
This is a fine macro lens for the Nikon DX line of cameras with hairsplitting sharpness. It can serve as a decent portrait lens if you need to see every wrinkly detail or with a soft focus for others. It would not be a bad walk around lens for general use. This lens also works perfectly with the Nikon ES1 slidecopying adapter which treads right on the lens making it easy to keep everything in alignment and focus, something I learned from reading other reviews. With family slides to convert, that was a deciding factor in choosing this lens over other macros. Good value and highly recommended, especially if you need to convert your legacy slides to digital and certainly excellent for macro work. A few hundred pictures on and no regrets or complaints.
Marianna –
This is a great multi use lens. It takes fantastic macro images and does truly work well for portraiture. Id say the only downside is how physically close you have to get to a subject for a macro photo, you can sometimes block your own light. Overall, love it, would absolutely recommend.
William –
Ive been using for a few months to do cat photography in the animal shelter. It is working well Allows me some shooting in the lower light. The focal length and the minimum focusing distance allows me to stay near the cat so it doesnt jump off the studio table but still get the shot even closer up.
DONALD –
I purchased the lens to replace a Nikon 50mm f1.8D which had produced very soft images with my D7000. Love the size and weight of the lens. Focuses quitely and quickly. More importantly it produces very sharp images. Even wide open the image quality is good, and stopped down one stop gets much better. The focal length lends itself to be a normal lens mores so than a 50mm when using an APS sensor. I am very happy with the lens plus you get the ability to get close ups. Consider the cost and it is a no brainer
DAWN –
Its price is hard to argue with. As a beginner this lens was a little harder to get adjusted to since macro is a bit less forgiving. The autofocus with my D3500 really sucked with this lens. I almost never used it so the manualauto switch was very helpful since I didnt have to switch settings when I threw this lens on. Otherwise it was great with depth of field and plenty fast to catch a moving target, although it can be difficult to get close enough with a 40mm. On the other hand, the wide angle makes camera movements a lot less noticeable. It is a great entry way to macrophotography.
Richard –
I bought this lens specifically to pair with the Nikon ES2 film and slide copier. Ive run the stack on my D300, D500 and D850 cameras. The lens works just fine on the D300 and D850, however it has compatibility issues with the D500 such that it does not auto focus or take Aperature commands from the D500 which leaves me manually focusing it not a problem but slow and stuck at f3.5 big problem copying film negatives. The good news is the 40mm f2.8 and ES2 stack work like a champ on the D850, so for myself Im quite happy.
MICHAEL –
I already own Nikon 105mm f2.8 macro, one of Nikons sharpest and best made. But its heavy so I tend not carry it around unless I really plan ahead. I ordered the 40mm on a bit of a whim, but am glad I did. Its lightweight and at f2.8 is fast enough for all uses. Importantly, the image quality is much, much better than one would expect from a lens at this price point. In addition to being a really fine macro lens, at this focal length it does nice service as a normal lens. It is a little balky to install and take off the body. Im not sure why. But thats a minor reservation. Im using mine on a D7000, but as an AFS lens, should be useful on any Nikon DSLR body.
fisher –
Very nice lens. I can get really close 3 inches to the subject. Ive got to study up on field of focus because at this close I get focusing problems. I can focus clearly on the middle of the subject but all around it is blurry. It is just another challenge for me, but the lense is great….operator error I think they call it
Michael –
This is a great lens. It works well for portrait or anytime you want natural perspective. The 2.8 aperture renders nice blur to backgrounds. Youll want to stop down the lens if shooting macro to assure all of your subject is in focus. This is a good lens and well priced for macro. But understand that at 40mm, to photo at 11 your subject will only be about an inch from the front of the lens. So lighting is more difficult and critters may bolt. I use the included lens hood to keep from touching things I photograph, the lens can focus that close. Its a good lens for many uses and very sharp. The focus ring is firm and feels solid when manually focusing.
RadioRay –
This is the first lens I have bought in a long time. I use this lens mostly for closeup macro photography. With the fast f 2.8 lens you can get really close up and get great macro photos. The auto focus works really well even youre very very close to your subject. The lens also works well for portrait photography. For a Nikon lens it is a great value at a great price
ElleBie –
Small and lightweight this lens is a great introduction to macro photography. Ive found it works best in manual focusing mode as it hunts for a focus point quite a lot in auto. I like the switch to reduce the autofocus search when shooting over 0.2m, and used it happily to take portraits at its widest aperture. The lens seems sharp and while it doesnt have the magnification of the bigger lenses, its price tag makes it a tidy little purchase.
Michael –
I purchased this for use with the ES1 slide copy attachment on a D7500 body also sometimes on a Z50FTZ. It is excellent for this purpose. Sharpness, linearity and freedom from color fringing and vignetting are great wide open, although I usually stop down to f5.6 or f8 anyway as insurance against bowed or warped slides. As a generalpurpose macro, close focus working distance is very tight and subject lighting can be a challenge. I prefer the 85mm or 105mm micro for general closeups. However the 40mm f2.8G doubles as a decent generalpurpose normal prime. At f2.8 its not super fast, and its autofocus motor speed is modest, but its tack sharp even wide open and not too heavy. I dont have the 35mm f1.8 DX but I think maybe with this on hand, I wont need one.
SUSAN –
I have always wanted to do the arty photos the pupil of the grasshopper, the delicate tracery of the veins on a leaf. I chose this lens because of the price and because of the photos I saw online from more experienced photogs. I am having a lot of fun with it, but I still want to get closer, so I am going to include with this lens, the 105mm, which has the reputation of being for serious macro photographers. This little lens though, gives me great clarity, fun bokeh, and is a walk around lens to boot. Its not bulky, its fun to use and its super sharp. I CAN get really close to my intended subject but have noticed some shadowing from the camera itself. I do have to get physically quite close to my subject. I am hoping the 105mm allows me some additional breathing room. For the price, this is an easy lens to own and I plan on continuing to use it quite a bit. Havent received the 105mm so….stay tuned
Who Waters the Ocean –
Purchased and used specifically to photograph flat materials diplomas and awards and small 3dimensional objects coins with small bas relief especially. While working distance is often a correct criterion for use of macro photography lenses, the resulting longer focal length lenses customarily used with ringlight variants results in light reflections from object surfaces. A common example are diplomas mounted embedded in a glossy plastic. While this can be avoided with effective studio lighting, speed or more remote locations are very common shooting needs for my work. The wide field, shorter working distance and spherical corrections built into this Nikon 40mm Micro is used with a Nikon R1C1 Closeup Speedlight and gets the job done quickly.
L –
Nice and sharp. Images have a good pop. Very good bang for the buck. Autofocus is slow and sometimes tentative, but you dont buy a macro lens to go shooting indoor sports The only real limitation is the short working distance if you want to shoot at 11, get a longer focal lenght. For flowersized objects and the like, it works great.
Randall –
This lens is amazing. Build quality is what you would expect at this price range. Not anything to complain about considering it has a metal mount. Image quality is outstanding.
Cameramom –
This is my first purchase of a lense that didnt come with the camera. I absolutely love it. I have so much to learn with this lense. After a few days of practicing I have learned a lot about better focusing and enjoying the tiny details it can pick up.
Swim to reach the end. –
Great lens for the price. Looked at the AFS DX MicroNIKKOR 85mm f3.5G ED VR, but as it was out of my price range decided to go with the 40mm. Not at all disappointed. Most of my macro shooting is done outdoors, so I havent had an issue with the closeness of the lens to the subject. The pleasant surprise with this lens is the sharpness and nice depth of field. Ive found Im using the lens more for portrait and landscape shots than macro.
Michael –
The 40mm f2.8G is a great little lens. It can be used for portraits, closeups, macro, landscape, etc. It can create extremely sharp photos or photos with incredibly rich bokeh, depending on how you use it. If you use it for macro photography it is almost essential that you use a tripod and even better if you can add a flash. Ive been primarily using it for nonmacro closeup photography, which is an area where this lens seems to excel e.g. between 612 inches from the subject. When using it for closeup shots Ive been using the LiteScoop flash modifier and a manual flash attached to the shoe, where the LiteScoop is pointing to the ground its not really designed for this…but it works great.
powyspaul –
Dont be deceived by the lightness of this lens, in fact this a distinct advantage. Performs really well as a walkabout lens with the added advantage of macro. You have to get right up and personal with your macro subject and lighting can be a bit tricky but results are super sharp.
Howie –
Good basic clarity. Slighty does to focus. Light weight, stable build. Above average picture results.
DebW –
I wanted a lens for my Nikon D5600 that could handle close ups and this lens works great I ordered it online on a Wednesday and it arrived Thursday, so I was very pleased with that. Looking forward to taking many beautiful pictures
sierrasolitude50 –
An entry level macro, this lens takes nicely detailed photos of close up subjects. It also does well as a fixed length lens for landscapes.
waitingforlefty –
Pros I am just getting to know this lens, and find that it occupies a useful space between the 35mm and the 50mm primes, albeit with less lowlight capability. The 40mm is a good lens for portraits and a good, general walkingaround lens. Its not my favorite prime right now that would be the nifty 50, but a good one to have in your bag, with the usual superior Nikon quality Lightweight and easy to carry. I would give it 3 12 stars if I could. Beach Cameras specials bonus filter pack this time are great.Cons Lack of lowlight capability. Sometimes hunts to focus.Other thoughts 40mm is a nice inbetween focal length, neither too telephoto nor too wide.
scrumpyjack –
Lovely generalpurpose lens for those native 50mm shooters. Slightly longer on DX 60mm equivalent but a lovely focallength. Does slightly larger than 11 macro and as a result, its a great lens for close work. Shorter than Id use for purely dedicated macro as its easy to get in the way of your own light, but with care and a little manoeuvring, its more than possible to get welllit macros. Oh.. this lens is sharp at non macro distances from 2.8. Astounding considering its low cost. Definite thumbs up and glad that I purchased one.
Steve –
After shooting 35mm and DSLRs for almost 50 years I decided to get me a MicroMacro. The Nikkor 40mm fit my retired budget as well. Have not had a lot of opportunities to use it but what I can see so far it will fit the bill and I believe I will enjoy it for years to come.
Kenneth –
Great Nikon quality at affordable price. This little gem is light so you can carry it around all day with virtually no strain. Close up and macro shooting is a breeze with pleasant bokeh at 2.8. The 60mm focal length and the 2.8 aperture provide excellent flexibility if youre in a low light situation and in general if you want to walk around with just one lens for a day or longer.
Bill B –
I bought this lens to have macro capability at ground level. With the D5200s variangle monitor and live view, I can easily put the camera at ground level for nature photos in situ such as mushrooms, flowers and the occasional insect or reptile. Then the 40 MM has what is needed shortest focal length of the 11 micronikkors so it can get closer to subject great for this type of photo fine detail to the edges, up to 2.8 allowing for ample flexibility to get depth of field for a particular shot, and easy to tweak the focus in MA or do it yourself in M. This lens is compact and light weight so matched with a small DSLR like the D5200, it is easy to carry on a hike to have ready for the macro shots I look for and also for general photos like shooting back in the day with a reasonably fast normal lens. This lens does not have quite the rock solid feel of bigger and pricier nikon lenses, but it does have the min focus, speed and sharpness I want for the use described here.
jerrysherman –
Ive been using the lens for a couple weeks, shot some orchid photos, and at the other end, shot some star pictures, got the best shots of Andromeda galaxy ever. It is smaller and lighter than I expected. Close focusing, fast f2.8, Everything I could want in a macro. You will need a tripod for macro work. I didnt expect to use it for night photography, but it works beautifully. Highly recommend. I am so looking forward to spring insects and flowers
Laurav –
I bought this lens to use for photographing jewelry, specifically pearls. It has been hard to capture the luster but I am noting with this lens that has changed. There is a color richness and clarity present in the photos this lens even allows me to catch the glimmer of diamonds. A very good purchase Very pleased
Fozzybear101 –
I wanted a lens to take macro photos without spending a fortune and this lens fit the bill. It takes great up close pictures. And the price cant be beat. The only issue I have had with the lens is focusing. If you do not use a tripod you need to make sure there is plenty of light so you can use a faster shutter speed. Overall this is a good lens, and perfected for my needs.

40mm f2.8G AFS DX MicroNikkor Lens 45mm F2.8P 50mm F1.8D AF weight 5oz Vivitar Macro Extension Tube set close to subject, light stability issues, handy, flat art work, archival institutionalart, 40mm f2.8G Micro can do what the other larger Nikkor Micro lenses can do except for the very close space necessary, so close lighting configurations may have to be set up. With only a few inches from the lens, the lens itself may block light, and at this distance the manual focus setting will avoid the automatic focus from flickering and not releasing the shot. For such macro shots some assisting surfacedevise will help to steady the camera. This can be done with the handy weight and size of this lens is preferred, easily carried along as a 2ed lens, and a very flat clear image achieved that Macro lenses are known for. I have a very sharp wide angle telephoto lens 28300 but is not designed to render the flatness nor to zoom in to the size of a postage stamp to fill the view finder. The Vivitar Macro Extension Tube set seems to work best when all three in the set are mounted. Then more than half of a postage stamp can be clear. This is not the view of a microscope, its still a view of the visible field, only small parts of it. The fixed Nikkor 50mm F1.8D AF is half the size of the 40mm Macro and serves well on my Nikon 7000 body especially when traveling light is desired, however it does not have the features of a Macro. Another lens that does not have most of a Macros features but is lighter 4.2 oz and even more compact than the 50mm is the Nikkor 45mm F2.8P a true pancake lens that is only available used. Silver, very well designed and made, comes with its own compact lens hood, and takes very flat sharp images. For those who like the gains in space and weight, it requires what users may or may not like, manual focusing. Taking the time to focus and see clearer the image sought can help return looking to center stage, but if the situation is better tackled with lots of quick shots to sort and Photoshop later, then this lovely lens will not fill the bill.
WeFergie –
There was a need in the camera bag for a prime lens faster than the usual zooms and this fit the bill perfectly. Used it while at the ABQ Dragway shooting the jet cars for the team, both action and candid. The f2.8 rating coupled with ISO made for some great shots when time was critical. Nice and light and fast focusing with outstanding optics make this one a keeper.

the oldest nikon in my collection is a 196773 nikkormat ftn followed by a 1974 nikon ftn, a 1977 nikon f2as, a f3 a f4 I no longer own I was ushered into the digital age by the D300 the D7000. nikkor lenses to numerous to mention many of which I still own. the bottom line is my lifetime of nikon has only required one repair, a nikonos III I managed to break myself. the lenses are spectacular and the new ones seem to be better and better. I bought this micro nikkor because of the reputation of this lineage for distortion free image quality and it seem like the most logical way to digitize a life time of kodachromes
trevlp35 –
There are a lot of excellent photographers out there with legacy Nikon glass that do not care for these modern, lightweight plastic lenses. Being a chap of a certain age, I appreciate the weightcost saving and, without prejudice the excellent optical performance this lens can produce. In particular, I had been researching a suitable micro lens to partner with the ES1 slide copier. It seems to be a wellkept secret that you can very successfully copy sidesBW negs with a DX camera, although Nikon insists that the more expensive ES2 Camera kit ideally suited for use with the Nikon D850 plus extension tubes and a 60mm micro Nikkor is the only way to go. It may be more sophisticated, but it is rather pricy. The ES1 adapter 52mm thread screws directly onto the front of this lens and keeps things nice and simple. The digitization results I have obtained far exceed any flatbed scanner I have used, and you have the option of producing a camera RAW file that will allow further manipulation in Photoshop.

This lens is one of the best purchases I have made considering the price. It is versatile Can be used as a standard portrait lens and the quality of the glass itself is great. The first day I took it out to the local park, photos looked decent on the LCD, but went home and transferred them on the computer and WOW I was stunned I ended up starring at one of the pictures for a full minute amazed at how it turned out I am an amateur photographer. I would recommend this lens for anyone who would like to take macro photos and would like to save some money. I would recommend a tripod for nature photography but this lens does allow for some fast shutter speeds. Only drawback is having to get inches close to the subject I have gotten some weird looks to get a good shot AND this lens attract more dust for some reason maybe since you have to go so close than my other lens… Have to clean it constantly

This lens is really good. . Ive taken some awesome close up pictures. I debated on this lens and the the nicer twice the price lens. This one performs well and is really good for a beginner like myself. If I could do it all over again I would have gone for it and bought the more expensive lens because I think I will continue to take pictures and in the long run would have appreciated the more expensive lens.

Couldnt wait to get it. Very impressed with it and its functionality. For someone who might be interested in doing Macro work I would recommend it because I know youll be hooked They ask, Is it SHARP Well sticking to the facts you can observe the first shots I took with it and a Ring Neck Pheasant A.K.A. Clyde and one shot with Lens Flare in the birds lens The Best review is in the naked untouched photo, so you the reader can judge for yourself and I cant resist telling everyone that these shots are Hand Held.

Im very happy with its macro capability. I do product photography and I am very happy to be able to take very close shots and the quality of the photos. There is one thing that Im concerned is that it started to shaking and making noise when the cylinder moves to focus, occasionally. If it continues, I would take it to Nikon for warranty service. But over all, really great inexpensive macro lens.

I ended up buying this lens but returning it after a few weeks. Anybody who works with macro photography will tell you that anything less than 85mm isnt recommended for macro photography. This 40mm lens blocks most of the natural light you need while taking pictures because you need to be ONE INCH away from your subject to really use it at its potential. While it takes amazing pics, the fact that youre too close to your subject and blocks out yoru light, as well as the bodyflash and external flashes. Id recommend the 85mm or the 105mm for sure

If youre getting into macro photography this is the perfect match for your DX camera I used to have an old macro lens that I bought used, it was heavier than the camera and made things a little harder, I was able to get nice pictures but sometimes you need to save some weight in your backpack.I would recommend this with my eyes closed.
Debs –
Weve only had this lens for a few days now, but have used it for several projects. Very impressed with it. Photos are clear and sharp. The details it brings out iis amazing.

I researched this lens before purchasing it. It was rumored to supply the photographer with more uses than just macromicro photography. It delivered more than I expected. The lens takes amazing closeup shots and is an absolutely amazing lens for portraiture. The first time I used it for anything other than closeups was to take candid shots of my nieces and nephews. The lens is fast enough to capture the high speed action of childs play. 40mm is a great focal length for achieving natural looking pictures with great bokeh. The Autofocus limiting switch allows the lens to automatically focus on the desired subject even faster. I highly recommend this lens to anyone interested in a piece of glass with numerous applications.

Its a budget micro macro lens. Great for portraiture photography too. Plastic exterior but with metal mount. Not the quickest but its great for the value. Recommended.

I got this as a gift for my boyfriend and oh my god, its been fantastic We took pictures at the family Thanksgiving this week, and wow, so many sweet photos, his mother got teary eyed. Makes everything look nice, from food, to frogs, to family very easy to use.
photovet925 –
The only reason for my not giving this lens a solid 5star rating is the lack of fstop settings, which was a given going in. Its use is therefor limited to the new bodies with settings done on the camera. Otherwise, it is a bright, extremely sharp lens at all apertures and distances, good for portrait and general use as well as 11 macro, with a bokeh far superior to what you get with your kit zoom lens. At its 60mm equivalent with DX format you can just leave it on and use your feet for zooming. Its light weight makes it easy to carry all day, too.

Mated to a D7K, this is my go to pubbin combo. 60mm FOV perfect for candids wo gettin in their grill. Sick sharp f2.8 this is pretty much where it lives. Smooth bokeh, great colors, just a joy to shoot. Cover a lot of local bands, solo gigs, events and since it does macro to 6 really opens up creative captures when the opportunity presents itself. The lens is a steal, try one.

Pros SmallLightweightEasy to useTakes great macro pixVery reasonable costExcellent use of available light outdoorsCons None so farOther thoughts This lens simply takes great macro photos I cant believe it was made for the prosumer market We experimented with supplementary lighting and found that the best pix were invariably captured with available light. Great. I highly recommend it.
Gary –
I purchased the lens specifically to copy old 35 mm slides. The quality of the reproduction compares favorably to my CanoScan 9000F scanner, which was previously selected for this purpose. This lens with an ES1 adapter, mounted to my D7100 camera is a fast and very easy to use, providing very consistent results.
StaticShock88 –
This honestly surprised me based on the quality and value. I researched many lens and compared them all. It depends on how you want to use it. If youre going to take product photos, this is great but if youre going to take pictures of scarydangerous insects or animals, a longer mm lens would be best for you.
Swetha –
This lens deserves more praise than it deserves and I honestly think this is a very underrated lens. I have used this lens exclusively for shooting macro photography and I have captured a wide range of subjects from wateroil drops to arthropods. Keep in mind, it has a very shallow dept of field Refer my butterfly shot but definitely tack sharp.I am not a professional but more an hobbyist and here are some of my observations on how to get maximum effect from this lens.1 Get real close to your subjects. That is key for Macro photography. I cant stress on this enough2 Use a speedlitering flash for extreme sharpness. It makes a world of difference with and without flash even if you shoot in broad daylight3 Use photoshop elements at a minimum for editing Optional4 Shoot in RAW and only edit in RAW5 Really understand this is a true 11 magnification. So use your livemode to your advantage to enhance sharpness before shooting from viewfinder if your project allows you to do it Refer abstract Oil on water macro photography6 Memorize point 1If you truly enjoy photography and look at it as an pure art form…BUY THIS NOW This is one lens I am ALWAYS carrying wherever I go along with my makeup
No Soup –
I bought this lens primarily for macro work but I have found that it works great as a general purpose lens as well. I originally thought that without VR there might be problems but I have not run into any blur problems yet. The images are very clear and sharp and for the relatively low cost I am quite pleased. I do not have any real complaints yet except that the lens shroud could fit a bit tighter. I would recommend this lens to anyone looking for a low cost macro lens from Nikon.
Rich –
I havent had a chance to use this lens for long but I really have had a lot of fun taking some real clear close ups of flowers and other items. A fairly low price for a quality lens
JayD –
This is an excellent lens for the price. The autofocus is a bit touchy and slow, but I usually shoot manual anyway. Very pleased with this lens.
Don –
I purchased the lens expressly for use with the Nikon ES1 Slide Copier and to obviate the use of extension tubes. The lenscopier system makes it very easy to frame slides for copying full frame in DX mode and to focus in either auto or manual mode. Highly recommended.
yiman1971 –
Superb image quality and versatile Brilliant for macro as well as portraits. Feels a little plasticy, but performs superbly, and for the price amazing. Glad I went for 40mm, over 35 or 50mm, as a better all rounder.
David –
At less than 300.00, I took a chance and purchased the 40mm Micro Nikkor lens. Much to my surprise the lens does do an admirable job with one exception. Manual focussing is a bit jerky, clearly not smooth. Perhaps this get better with use. Well see. Rotating the collar for focus just is too jerky. Time will tell if theres improvement

Ill start by saying this I dont like prime lenses. Yes, I understand why prime lenses are good fast, beautiful bokeh, sharp but useful Well, for the types of photography I do travel, landscapes, theyre just not practical. Ive tried the 35mm 1.8 and the 50mm 1.8 on my D7000 and they just ended up collecting dust. I sold them off and bought this. Third times a charm, right RIGHT. Why did I buy this Because this lens serves two purposes its relatively fast at 2.8, its wider than the 50mm on my crop sensor, and it has the ability to shoot macro. For me, this lens makes sense as I did want a faster lens in my bag, AND I can shoot macro. For the price, it cannot be beat. Its also lightweight important for travel, VERY sharp, and I can still use it for portraits should the need arise. This is an excellent value for your money. Im having a blast learning macro photography, and its a fast lens for general indoorlow light work. Love it.
Jattix –
Fantastic lens and its a lot of fun. I am still new to photography so my images may be newbie quality but I wanted to show prospective buyers what this lens can do. I put the images through Photoshop using Topaz Adjust and Topaz Detail to bring more life out the subject. I have other images that are much better than these two but the posting limitations wont allow me to show you.
Beck Squared –
This all around camera lens provides the most professional pictures. It is compact and lightweight and accomodates a wide range of options. Portraits are soft and flattering, and the light is perfectly balanced for the finest details for up close shots. The natural background blur allows one to focus selectivly for the most stunning subject isolation.
Ed –
This is not a professional lens. However, I would say it is in a mid range pro level due its versatility taking some macro photos and portrait photos. Shooting video the lens also works great. So far the lens has been working great so my rating is 5 mostly due its versatility even if its not a pro lens I could say the amateur or more experienced photographer can do interesting things with this lens A nice lens in your learnign curve for being a professional photographer
Nikon4MN –
I love to photograph flowers upclose and this lens does not disappoint for capturing tacksharp images. For workrelated activities, it is very useful in photographing fine details like text and symbols I can use in professional documentation for other employees. In short, Im very pleased with this lens.
Kathy –
I wasnt sure if I really needed a macro lens because I had another lens that I could use that wasnt specifically for close ups but I am very pleased and I have no regrets about buying this lens. Razor sharp images, beautiful colors and pleasing bokeh The price was reasonable too.
anpatel –
Its a great lens for DX body, this is good all over lens for portrait and macro work to. The macro distance is little closer which may be accepted for 40mm but not good for smaller moving insects. But, the image quality is really good, sharp and nice bokh for all kind of photography. All over worth to buy lens for DX body and I am using this on my Nikon D7200.
Joseph –
This is great bangforthebuck glass. I purchased this to document small items in the collection of the museum where I work. It does a fine job on that, especially when stopped down, but also allows plenty of pretty and arty shallow depth of field when wide open so I can also do nice beauty shots for Instagram.
Kathtoo –
Takes wonderful macro shots and is quick to focus all on its own.Have been very pleased with this new lens both close up and at a distance.
clchev –
The lens is a macro lens for Nikon cameras. The prices is reasonable and the quality is high. It was used soon after purchase and provide solid detail in the subjects photographed. Its strength is using it for macroand most will be satisfied with the picture quality. It uses the newer lens technology.
KENNETH –
The lens is very light and compact compared to my 3 other macro lenses, but packs a nice wallop. The autofocus is not quite as fast as my other lens but since my lighting can be a bit more restrictive I do mostly underwater photography I just need to adjust more with supplemental light. The images are very sharp especially for the price. Ideal for small to medium sized subjects that of course is relative, I use my 105mm macro with diopters for very small subjects. For my uses, it will stay in my arsenal.
sksm74 –
Arrived well packed and in timely manner. Lens is totally functional, looks to have been used very little. Very satisfied with the purchase.
pit11 –
Did a lot of looking and every review I read was positive. This was my first macro lens and it worked great on my camera. Pictures were extremely sharp and noticeably better than the kit lens that came with the camera. The price is very affordable in the context of buying lenses. Id recommend this lens again and again.
tanager41 –
Although Ive been taking pictures for many years, this is my first prime lens. Not only is the image quality very high, but its more versatile than I expected. Im so very glad I made this purchase
Larry –
If you are using a Nikon DX body, and want to do some macro photography, this would be a good choice. The draw back would be in trying to photograph bugs that are moving. A longer lens with a greater working distance would be recommended as most bugs do not seeing a lens up close. If your main focus is stationary objects, this lens is a good choice. The lens is nice and sharp with good contrast. The focus is quick, and accurate. Like any lens, it may not focus on where you want. If that is the case the manual focus works well.
Manny86 –
This is a must have lens Great focal length. Comparable to my 35mm 1.8G as far as portraits are concerned… But also the macro abilities which are so fun and amazing to shoot with Highly recommended Just buy it
Frank –
Pros Having never really done macro photography before thought I would go for a cheaper lens just to see if I would like to get into macro and that is a resounding yes. Image quality is good, AF is quick but would you use AF for macro Bokeh is excellent. Got this lens as part of a deal buying a D7100 so got 25 cash back and a free battery grip.Cons Only negative is at only 40mm you have to get pretty close to the subject, but I new this would be theccase.
Michael –
Difficult to focus manually since the focus ring is very stiff and yet there is too much play in focusing for comfort. Automatic focusing seems to cope, Not a happy owner,
dandy1981 –
Wife uses this for photos of various kinds. All within the distance limits of the lens of course. there is slight vignette, but that is what she wants. Only because she is using a d750 though. Crisp clear images with great detail with this lens.
geergirl –
I did a lot of research before deciding on this lens. Wanted something to take closeup photos without spending a fortune. Took a photo of a plant outside and when I looked closer at the photo there was a little baby gecko on it I zoomed in and the little guy was so clear and in focus So far I love this lens
clamdigger –
Appropriate macro for an APSC Nikon DSLR, equivalent to a 60mm macro on a fullframe sensor. Not the most robust construction mostly plastic but the modern standard these days and probably good enough. Light weight, with fine optics.
gibsonmark –
Tools open our eyes to new possibilities. This lens was like looking at the world from a totally new prospective. And with photography, thats a must. Its focus is amazing. Youll need time to set up lighting with the closeness of the focusing. But for the money, its a great value
CCoatney –
I am still new to photography and have a lot to learn but I wanted something a little better than the 1855mm that came with the camera. The 40mm is a very good compromise for the price. I may give it 5 stars when Ive used it a little more. I use a Nikon d5300.
Robert –
Pros Good build quality as you would expect from Nikon. Relatively inexpensive. Reasonable bokeh. Average optics.Cons Difficult to focus at close range. Its worth spending the extra on a better quality lens with superior optics and image quality.
bethany.d –
This is a great inexpensive introduction to macro lenses. Beautiful bokeh. I even use this for portraits sometime.
ACCOUNTS –
Super sharp, fantastic lens for the price and for this format Had it on my D500, and used it for everything from Macro to portrait work
RICHARD –
I am very happy with the quality of both macro work and distance shots. It is an excellent lens. Because of its short focal length, it is necessary to get very close to the subject for macro. This is OK with inanimate subjects but could be a problem with critters.
Lee –
This lens, along with the slide copy adapter makes for a very good setup to make digital images of slides. I have a lot of slides I need to transfer into a digital format. I am using my speed light with them. Fast. Easy setup. I dont think you could improve on this combination.
johnnydc –
This little lens is a winnerI bought it to have a small, lightweight lens to use for documenting electronics pieces coming off an assembly line. It is incredibly sharp with a pleasant bokeh and excellent contrast. Its effectively replaced the 60mm MicroNikkor AFD on my DX cameras for portable macro work, as it is so much lighter and faster to focus than that lens. Its also great for video the autofocus is quick and quiet. The increased depthoffield provided by the short 40mm focal length is very useful as well. For the price, this lens really cannot be beat, whether youre shooting flowers or industrial products.
hodgepodgestuff –
I use this as my goto lens if Im going anyplace that will have things that I will want to shoot close up. It not only takes great close up shots, but its also a prime lens that takes sharp photos for portraits, and landscapes. If Im going to be taking pictures of birds then Ill take the telephoto zoom, but for any other situation this is going to be on my camera.
Mikey –
I bought this lens for my wife as an early Christmas present, as the Sigma EX Macro would not work with her Nikon D3100. Though her camera is outdated, this lens is not. Its builtin motor makes it work for almost any camera and it takes amazingly sharp photos with a great depth of field. It wasnt outlandishly expensive, so its perfect for beginners. She loves it
Hunt674 –
I bought this for my D7500 to use when visiting museums. I like to photograph entire pieces of artwork and then take pictures of detail areas. I also bought it as it is much smaller and lighter than the zoom lens that I bought with the camera.
Dave –
I have been using the 40mm MicroNikkor lens for about two weeks now. I needed to change from the 60mm version mostly because of space. The lens is sharp and responsive and the details in the images are what I was hoping for. This is a sweet lens for closeup work and for portraits. It reminds me of the old 55mm microNikkor I used on my old F.
Jose –
Just bought this lens from the refurbished department, and it arrived in great conditions, it just looks like a new one. I just took it to the beach to the some macro, and night photography and it works really well. With an f2.8 aperture, it works really well on low light conditions. The 40 mm focal length in a DX body, actually works as a 60mm lens which is almost as a regular lens. The only thing with this lens is that even though, it actually can reproduce 11 subjects, yo have to be really close to the subject. If your subject is a bug or any other living thing, it might or it will run away. Besides being to close to the subject can block the light coming from behind, so a tripod might also be required. The lens works grab for bokeh photography, with a very shallow depth of field with wide apertures. Also works great in low light conditions, and has great optics. If we look at this lens as a regular or almost regular lens, with the capability of focusing at about 2 inches from the subject to the length it is a must have for DX bodies.
RobRodin –
This is a great lens for street photography. You get great details in peoples faces and the bokeh or depth of field is really good. The very fast and quit auto focus makes it great for weddings when you need to be silent. Well worth the price and my new favorite street shooting lens. The macro is amazing as you can see in the attached picture of the bug on a cactus.
Linda –
Sweet lens for micro. Lightweight and crystal clear. No apparent distortion. Great for flowers, feathers and other still life compositions. Looking forward to candid environmental portraits and street scenes in the near future. B H worked with my budget and suggested this lens. I appreciate their suggestion, because it fits my needs exactly.
Mike –
The macro lens is a great sweet spot of price and Nikon quality. Very quick focus response when used in a normal fashion, with a manual override for that close up focus. I would recommend this to anyone looking for that sharp near field image
Andrew –
After using this lens for 3 months, I am thrilled with its performance. Pictures are beautifully sharp with lots of detail. I thought its lack of VR would be a problem when I bought it, but its proved to not be an issue for me because its best used with a tripod anyway. This is due to the extremely narrow depth of field involved with shooting macros. Getting quality macro shots would be nearly impossible without a tripod. This lens is also great for general use if 40 mm is an appropriate focal length for you. Overall, a very high quality and versatile lens at a great price
