When I saw these open earphones, I was intrigued by the idea because my worst gripe about my AirPods is that I have to pause the music or remove the earphone to be able to hear people talking to me. Yes, these are expensive – so I tried a cheap brand, just to see if the concept worked. It did, but the sound quality wasn’t good. So I decided to give these a try, and I’m glad I did. Their performance is light years ahead of others. They’re very easy to put on, the flexible earpiece clips around your earlobe gently and they are comfortable for many hours of use – I’ve worn them all day and night without issues, only removing them to charge them via the case, which is nice & quick. They don’t interfere with my glasses at all, I can put them on and remove them without touching the earphones. And, best of all, they don’t fall off or out of your ear, even if you’re headbanging! I’m mobility impaired so don’t go running but I reckon they’ll be great for runners. Because they’re Bose, you have an expectation of great audio quality… and they don’t disappoint, especially in immersion mode, where the sound is amazing and really does seem to be positioned very slightly in front of you. There are 2 immersion mode settings, one where the positioning changes with your head movements, and one static where it doesn’t. Although the earphones don’t go in your ear like traditional earphones, the OpenAudio technology sounds just as good as if they were, without making the music audible to other people. The sound is fantastic for all kinds of audio and music, I have very eclectic tastes and the only type of music they don’t excel for is bass music where very low frequencies are the norm, but I’ve never come across earphones that are great at this, it’s their size. I have larger over ear headphones and a stereo with a big subwoofer for that type of music! They’re as good for listening to ambient music and soundscapes eg Sigur Ros, electronic music like Ladytron and classical music as they are for listening to the latest rock, pop and dance music. They sound great with Spatial Audio/3D audio too. I also find them great for laying in bed listening to audiobooks, they don’t hurt like other earphones can when you turn on your side and they’re pressed against the pillow. How do they get on in a noisy environment? Great. They have an auto volume function that can increase/decrease the volume based on the sounds around you, and maximum volume is loud – you wouldn’t have them turned up to the top for normal usage, I have them set at less than half volume pretty much all the time. You can control volume, playback, sound mode and even your voice assistant using the buttons on each earpiece, a click, double/triple click or long hold allows several controls to be used with just one button. I found the button to actually be better to use than the touch sensitive stalk controls on other earphones mainly because you don’t accidentally activate it so easily if you adjust the position of the earpiece. If you’re intrigued by these earphones but the price concerns you, give them a try… I realised what a good investment they are once I tried them, and use them far more than I have any other earphones ever, because they’re comfortable, don’t fall out of my ear, the sound quality is amazing and they let me hear as much of my environment as I want/need to. They’ve replaced my over ear headphones as my day to day listening buddies. They’re pricey, but they’re worth it. A definite two thumbs up

I’ve been using these now for a few weeks, at the gym, on the train, and at home. I got them to replace my galaxy buds 2 pro, as they were causing some kind of ear infection every time I used them. The over ear design of these buds have eliminated any issues that the galaxy buds caused as there’s no contact with the buds and my ear hole. These are comfortable and sit secure on my ears without any sign they might fall off in a hard gym session. After a short time I even forget that I’m wearing them, and the sound feels like I’m somewhere near to speakers rather than like having two small speakers stuffed into my ear holes. The battery life is good, I’d say about average when compared to other buds. These buds tell you (verbally) how much battery there is left when you put them on, which prevents any times when they’d go flat because I’m not aware of the battery life. The sound quality and sound volume is average at best. Due to the over ear design, they lack any real kind of bass. They also lack high volume as the tiny speakers can only pump out so much volume and there is no noise cancellation. The result of this lack of bass and volume, is that the music lacks any real “punch”. This lack of punch is partially made up for by the good quality of the bose buds, but I have some very cheap (£18) random brand Bluetooth buds which I use occasionally and they have bass, volume, and punch. With these bose buds, rich and deep music sounds flat and almost distant, and I’m constantly checking the volume is up to max (disappointingly it is). The cheapo £18 buds i have have far more umph to them, which counters their lesser quality sound. At the gym, the lack of noise cancellation and low volume means these buds are fighting a losing battle against the gyms terrible music. On a train, it’s fine with loud music but not great with podcasts or audio books. Overall, I kinda regret buying these buds due to the price and the very “meh” experience I get listening to music on them. Alas, I’m stuck with over ear buds for now. I haven’t tested the phone sound quality yet, but most reviews seem to indicate that it’s not great. 13 people found this helpful

For an open earbud buyer, it is for a specific need. The convenience to be able to listen, while still being aware of surroundings. Bose does this balance perfectly well. If your requirement is an absolute world class sound quality or a great microphone, please look elsewhere. It fits my need to have a smoother feel, doesn’t close ear canals and quick connectivity. I am a happy customer and wish Bose finds more innovative products.

Super easy to wear, extremely comfortable to the point that you forget you’re wearing them and with astonishingly great sound. I’m super impressed with these. Such an innovative design and very safety conscious too. Lets you hear the music clearly, but also keeps you aware of your environment by hearing ambient sounds. Great for walks, cycling and so on, whilst keeping safer than when one is tuned out with conventional headphones which block out or severely dampen external sounds. The sound is really quite excellent. I have some exceptional over ear headphones from Sennheiser and Focal, so am no stranger to quality audio. For portable, wireless earbuds, these really are extremely impressive. The fact that they’re this innovative open design, really is very impressive indeed. The one and only negative is at £300 (July 2024), they are a bit costly. However, the quality of sound, design and build, alongside effortless syncing with the Bose app, definitely makes me happy recommend them, even at that price. 20 people found this helpful

After owning various Bose headphones over the years, I was dubious about the reviews of these, as Bose has failed to hit the heights of the QC35s, in my opinion… Thankfully, though, I think we have a classic on our hands again! I was almost instantly blown away by the fit and sound of these. Don’t get me wrong, they don’t sound as good as over-ears, but that’s not what these are for, and they certainly don’t sound bad at all. But the fit… no more sweaty ear canals, no more ear fatigue. I don’t even care that there’s no noise cancellation—these are perfect! I bought these to replace my AirPods Pro, mainly because of the sweaty ear issue, but also due to how poorly the AirPods connected with my iPhone during phone calls. If I already had them in my ears, there was no issue, but if I had to take them out of the case to answer the phone and continue working, more often than not, the caller would be sent to voicemail by the time the AirPods connected to my iPhone. Very frustrating. Cue the Bose Ultra Open Earbuds… They connect immediately every time from out of the charger, so I can answer the call right away—exactly what I needed. The immersive sound works well. In fact, the sound overall is fantastic, yet you can still hear everything around you. They don’t fall out of your ears at the gym. They have physical buttons that you can customise in the Bose App. There are quite a few options in the app too, from EQ to firmware updates—it all works rather well. You can now have multi-point Bluetooth connections, thanks to the firmware updates (something that was lacking upon release). The sound quality during phone calls is good too, and you can hang up with a press of the physical button, so there’s no need to grab the phone or rush to where it is when you end a call. Everything just works, and it works well. The fit—this is the game-changer for me. If, like me, you wear headphones for a while, you’re probably familiar with ear fatigue. Not with these, though—yesterday I had them in for 5 hours, and if it weren’t for the playlist ending, I would have forgotten they were in my ears. They are well-built, easy to clean, and easy to charge. The look might not be for everyone, but nothing ever is—these are for people who don’t need over-ear headphones, for people whose in-ear headphones irritate them or fall out during exercise, or for those who are outside and don’t like the artificial feel of “Transparency Mode.” They’re great and perfect for me. I think they’ll be perfect for a lot of people too. Well done, Bose. I think you finally have another classic on your hands here. 10 people found this helpful

These open earbuds have excellent sound and volume, obviously considering that they are “open” style. The fit and is great and the comfort is exceptional. After a firmware update, they connect to two devices seemlessly, I have had them connected to my iPhone, android phone, chromebook and Windows laptop in many permutations and the connections have been flawless. The only reason I have given 4 stars, is that I feel the case is not of the quality that Bose has provided in the past. I have a houselod full of bose equipment, soundbar, speakers, headphones and other earbuds, I am a big fan of bose, through choice, not driven by following. As I say, at this price point the only downside for me personally is the case quality. 5 people found this helpful

I used these everyday. Super ideal if you want to listen to music but you need to be able to hear your surroundings. I used to have noise cancelling headphones and felt worried about not being able to hear my kids if they called me. I also feel less anxious when I’m out running as I can hear my surroundings and feel more aware. Love the colour and sound quality is great. Battery life is really good. I use these for around an hour a day and only charge them once a week. Love the fit. I can’t tell I’m wearing them. 11 people found this helpful
