Description

Improving upon their initial efforts, Nikon has revised the Z7 platform to offer more speed, faster processing, and greater versatility without sacrificing the beloved qualities of the original camera. The sensor’s design omits the optical low-pass filter for greater detail recording capability and the sensor supports a native sensitivity range down to ISO 64 for lush, rich capture.
Covering a useful range of focal lengths, the NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S is a versatile zoom, spanning wide-angle to portrait-length perspectives. Its constant f/4 maximum aperture maintains a consistent exposure throughout the zoom range and also helps to realize a more compact and lightweight alternative to an f/2.8 zoom.
A large 3.2″ 2.1m-dot LCD screen is available for bright, clear, and vivid image playback and live view shooting. The screen has a tilting design to benefit working from both high and low angles, and it is also a touchscreen for more intuitive operation, navigation, and settings control.
Utilizing the sensor and processor attributes for more than just still imagery, the Z7 II is also a more-than-capable multimedia camera. UHD 4K video recording is possible up to 60p and Full HD 1080p video recording is also supported at up to 120p for slow motion playback.
Included EN-EL15c rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides approximately 470 shots per charge, and in-camera charging is supported via USB, even when the camera is in use. Additionally, it is also compatible with optional MB-N10 multi-battery power pack for extended shooting times.

As a wedding photographer, I shoot with multiple bodies and lenses. The last 2 weddings I shot with a Nikon D850 and Z6. 2470 vr for the D850 and the Z series S 2470 on the Z6. The results from the new Z lens crushed the F mount lens. Extremely fast and accurate focus and renders everything beautiful.

Amazing, have had if for 6 months now. Pictures are clear, and the updates to the Z6 autofocus makes this a must have. Next, the 70200mm

First round with a mirrorlessZLens rig after moving up from a DSLRf2.8. The speed and sharpness of this lens are captivating right out of the box. There are way more features on this lens than my old 2470, but with time and practice Im sure I will come to appreciate the product even more. This is a PRO lens and is heavier than the kit f4 lenses. The front lens does telescope in and out which I didnt realize, but its not a problem. If you have the money and want the best, you wont be disappointed.

…whats the best 2470 of them all..Side by side comparison with my Tokina 2470 2.8, a very good lens in its own right, the new Z 2470 2.8 is sharper, lighter and works natively with my Z5. I said sharper, it seems sharper at the edges wide open although that assessment is a bit subjective. Not having to deal with the adapter is a big plus. Glad I bought it.

I used the DSLR lens for years, and this Z series really does knock it out of the water. Super sharp so far at all focal lengths.

I hesitated about investing in this lens to gain an extra stop of light. However, after having on my hands and testing you can see the difference in building quality and optical component. What a versatile lens. Images are extremely sharp with this lens. You will not be disappointed. Highly recommend , specially under promotionsales events

I got this in May 2019 to go with my Z6 skipped the F4 kit lens and have never looked back. I upgraded from a D750 to the Z6 and it was a good decision for me.Regarding this lens, the level of clarity Im getting is unlike anything Ive gotten in any of my Nikon 2.8 lenses before. Now I am anxiously awaiting the 70200 F2.8S to come out As someone noted earlier in their review, its literally like having a bag of primes.Focus is fast and quiet. As far as weight goes, it is somewhat weighty, weighing in just a bit more than the Nikon 24120 F4 that came with my D750. I just got back from a week of carrying it around the Gatlinburg area, along with some mountain hikes and it never got overly heavy. But I would imagine the F4 version being about 30 lighter and smaller would have been a tad better.I have yet to use the LCD screen on the lens.Using this lens for video is also very nice with the upgraded video AF now found in the Nikon mirrorless cameras. Previously, using the D750, I was 100 manual focus for video all the time and its nice having the ability to have some AF now on that front mostly for gimbal style work.Overall if youre into event work and need a single lens to cover a good range, I would not hesitate to get this one. I mostly do wedding and engagements and some promotional photovideo work and this lens has been a game changer for me.

The lens itself is a beast. It feels and handles very well. Its sharper than any other lens Ive ever tried

Sharp, sharp, sharp. I have the F mount and this one on the Z is better. Great new features. I wish it was a little smaller.

Amazing The best I love this lens. Its the lens that seems to stay attached to my camera the most, its the most used lens I own.

This lens balances so well with the Z camera. The overall weight is a real improvement from past lenses in this category. Focussing is super fast and quiet.

    Milton

It performs as expected. While no zoom is sharper than prime lens of the same caliber this one comes close. The autofocus is fast, accurate, and silent.

The Nikon Z 2470mm f2.8 S has a brand new multifocus system that consists of two synchronized AF drive units. This allows the Nikon Z 2470mm f2.8 S to not only focus incredibly fast, but also deliversuperb AF accuracy that we have never previously seen from Nikon before. Its consistent sharpness from the center of the frame all the way to the edges demonstrates the true advantage of Nikons new mirrorless system. Nikon has been highlighting the importance of the large throat size and shorter flange distance of the Z mount for lens designs, and the Nikon Z 2470mm f2.8 S proves that these things do matter. Not only was Nikon able to achieve superior performance, but it was also able to do it by cutting down both the size and the weight of the lens.

Optically the lens is just perfect. Superb. I didnt think the additional functions on the lens the inner ring, and the function button would be so helpful. Im enjoying them more than I thought. For my work, the inner ring is great to control ISO. And the function button is great as a playback shortcut. Well worth the .

Excellent lens for the Z7. Having moved to a mirror less lens camera I needed a good lens for family pictures and pictures locally. This lens does it.

As a professional photographer my kit are tools for the job, not a luxury buy. They need to be robust and deliver quality images every time and this is my most used focal length so is on my Z6ii 80 of the time.Amazing lens, i actually cant fault it.Edge to edge sharpness is better than the older F mount, fast focus, zooms very smoothly, contrastcolour rendition is beautifulweight wise its not a great deal of difference to the old F mount 2470 but is a bit smallerhighly recommend this lens

    Christopher

I am not generally a fan of the 2470 zoom range, but I didnt want to buy a bunch of Z primes. I already have enough F primes to build a fort with. But I do want native Z lenses, mainly because I want silent autofocus for video. So I read the reviews on this thing, and everybody said, basically Its at least as sharp as the primes certainly on a Z6 and ABSOLUTELY for video, albeit a stop slower. But itll give you 24, 35, 50, and I guess 70 you want it…all in one lens. If you look at the logic that way, its kind of a bargain Kind ofThis lens is painfully heavy compared to the other Z lenses. The balance feels a little weird on a Z6, perhaps because the camera itself is so light and the other Z lenses have trained me to expect a superlightweight combo. Its absolutely usable, but just be aware that going from the kit lens the f4 version of this to the 2.8 you will be shocked by the weight difference. If youre used to professional Fmount zoom lenses, its no problem. Just be aware that if youve gone from that featherweight f4 zoom, using this will be a workout. As for image quality, I cant complain. Its beautiful. I cant tell the difference between this and a nice prime lens. I have used it for stills at a few weddings and other events, and was completely happy with it. The VR seems improved over the F mount system, and silent focus is excellent for video. The downside is that if you intend to use this for video and you move around while filming, its quite heavy. It will make simply holding the camera whether by hand or on a gimbal a real strain. Depending on your video use case, you might be BETTER OFF using the f4 kit lens or using a prime simply because of the weight. But of course, if you put this on a tripod, no problem. In my current interview setup, this camera is the master shot, typically around 35mm plus or minus, wide open, attached to a Z6 and an Atomos recorder. Then I use a second Z6 Z 85mm lens a beautiful portrait lens for a closeup. AF is accurate and SILENT, which is almost creepy if youre not used to it. The pair is very versatile, and if youre a wedding photographer and still cant get your hands on the Z 70200, the old F 70200s still work great even with the chattering sound of the AF motor in AFC. So thats it. You have an excellentquality lens that makes great pictures, but gosh is it heavy. In a recent portrait session for a baby, I found myself going back to lightweight primes the 85 Z and older F lenses on the FTZ adapter simply because I was getting tired moving around and tracking the kid while holding this beast. Thats a situation where I needed a real fast shutter baby on the move so the VR didnt really help. At the same time, my arm strength isnt white it used to be.This is the very definition of a lens you want to rent for a weekend and try out before buying. Its very expensive, but if you buy it as I did, youll have a good reason why. And if you find the weight is too much, well, better to discover that before you shelled out all the dough, right

Wow I was in New York for the month and I picked up this lens at BNH I must say so far Ive been using it for about 10 days , it works quite well with the Z camera the finest 24 to 70 lens Ive ever used . I photographed and amazing sunset with it or we can a half ago . And nothing less than the best customer service from the store . Oh boy. I will be writing a thorough review as I use it more throughout the month Im going back to California today . The focus is accurate fast the LED indicator on the top of the lens is amazing what a help that is when your focusing in the dark . The z camera performs very nice when you have the native lenses with it . I have the F 4 lens which is a good lens but it did not suit my needs for my landscape photography and stuff that I was doing a good walk around Lens but theres 2.8 is no joke . Thanks BNH

Of the Trinity Z Lenses, this is the workhorse. If I take only one lens, this is it. This is a quality lens, fast and amazing images produced I love all three lenses in the trinity and this is my favorite of them.

Ive always loved Nikon Pro optics and this one tops them all in optical performance and focus speed. I have not found the little display useful at all.

The Nikon 2470mm f2.8 S is my first full frame lens. The cost, size and weight made me doubt my decision to upgrade from my D5300.I was also questioning purchase of this lens over the 2470mm f4 because of reports of how good that lens was and savings over the f2.8 especially when bought with body. But after shooting with this lens, I dont regret choosing it over the f4. I typically find myself in low light situations and wanting to utilize natural light as much as possible. Having the f2.8 at my disposal, allows me a better chance to do this with the additional benefit of shallower depth of field.

Its a fast lens, thats made of quality materials. The Nikkor Z 2470 f2.8 S lens is a workhorse. You didnt always have the spaceroom or time to change lenses to get that shoot. Enjoying every minute I shoot with this lens.

Slightly lighter than f mount version. Clearly sharper than my 2470 non vr f mount lens.. Well balanced on the z7ii. Feels solid and well made.

I have only had the lens 10 days, but love what I see so far. It is very solid with pro grade finish and protection. The rings are very smooth turning, the display and Fn button are nice touches. It is very sharp with a pleasing out of focus area. I got it on sale with an included UV filter which were added bonuses. I wish it zoomed internally but that is a minor complaint. Great match for my Z7ii. I am so happy with it that in time I will buy the sister zoom 1424 f2.8 S lens.

This new Z S series lens is fantastic, the image quality improvement over the FMount 2470mm f2.8 G ED lens that I have been using for over 12 years was indeed quite impressive. The new Z S lens is about .25 pounds lighter, about .25 inches shorter and about .25 inch larger in diameter. Pretty much a wash in my opinion, no issues with weight, handling or anything else. Feels right at home on the Z7 II body and produces images that are loaded with detail, clarity and color. Another one of the Trinity lenses that Nikon improved dramatically. This is a lens that I use most of the time and accounts for a vast portion of the images I shoot, I think being without this lens would be a huge mistake. I have all of the new Trinity Z f2.8 S zoom lenses I had the same Trinity set in the FMount and for the type of photography that I engage in are all I ever need. This new Z 2470mm f2.8 S lens is a must have lens, if you are considering obtaining one dont be shy, get one as I think you will truly enjoy the photographic results you can obtain with it.

This is a much better lens than I am a photographer This was a splurge purchase to better capture images in lowlight, indoor events of my young son. We havent had a chance to do that yet, but the lowlight ability of this lens has already shown through in picutres in our house. Super sharp, bokeh galore if you want it and quick to focus. It should be obvious this thing weighs a lot but I think on the camera it feels fairly balanced.

Just as advertised. Traded my Nikon F Mount 2470, which I using seamlessly with my new Z7 and the FTZ adapter, for the Z 2470mm and the quicker and silent focus. I am not disappointed. As soon as the 70200 is available, I will do the same.

  32. blank

    Robert

I wish this lens had been available when the .Z7 came out. Some people still think the F4 Kit lens is better. But to me, this is on par with my old FMount 2470.

Not a fan of the rear control dial, but it can be turned off. The little display could be handy, still playing with that. I have been shooting a lot with the lens on my Nikon Z6II. It feels really well balanced, like they were made for each other. I was happy enough with the combo that I sold my Nikon D850 and 2470 f2.8 F. Mirrorless has been a fun experience, I have been loving it. This lens is wicked sharp and has just a wonderful quality to the pictures I have taken. No turning back, but this first step into the new Z system has been fabulous.

Ive used all the high end lenses from Nikon F mount, and none of them is better than this lens. The only lens i own, that compares to this one in image quality is the 70200 f2.8 FL. I believe this lens is made with magic glass, the low light resolve in detail and sharpness is oustanding Thats due to the fact that you can handhold this lens and shoot at 115 or even 110, and the Image Stabilization of the lens combined with the Z7s IBIS will render tack sharp pictures at low light with very decent low ISO, whats not to love about that This lens is worth every penny and more.

  35. blank

    Christaniel

This lens is crazy sharp. I use this lens almost all the time on my Z6 and I love it. Super sharp, the AF works fast and it delivers an awesome image quality. A bit heavy though, but nothing to worry about. Also it feels very premium.

Shortly after getting this lens, I took a hike in a municipal park here in Castle Rock, CO. I took some wide angle shots of landscapes and then several of the Castle Rock from which the town took its name. They were all sharp, even at infinity. I cant wait to see how they are when I blow them up and get them printed.

I am a portrait and fashion photographer who lives and work in the San Francisco Bay Area. Although I do not routinely use for 2470 focal range for portraiture, I do use it for special events e.g. Carnival in the Eastern Caribbean or when I am teaching workshops. I initially bought the Z 2470 f4S, but realized I needed the extra stop of light. While I still have the f4 as a walk around lens, for professional work this Z 2470 f2.8S has already earned my respect. The image quality is amazing. The edge to edge sharpness wide open at f2.8 is amazing.Im rating the lens while I am on my first overseas trip with it. I used it for a recent workshop in the Caribbean, and have attached a sample image here.Bottom line If youre a professional photographer, you cant go wrong with this lens. Its a little heavier than the f4, but overall it is well balanced on my Z7 and Z6.

I purchased this lens based on reviews which states this is currently the best 2470 available right now. I would have to agree. I had the Sony 2470 GM for my a7r3. I was not happy with the images for the price so I returned it. Since I also now own the nikon z7ii, this was my first choice of lens to purchase. No regrets whats so ever. Wherever the nikon goes, this follows along with one prime. Buy it and enjoy.

I have the f mount series of this lense which I used on my Z6 with the FTZ adapter, the results were comparable to my D500,however the z version performs as is expected for a native lense, sharp, crisp and without fault. The results were such that I have ordered the 70200 f2.8 to add to my kit.

I have this lens for about 2 weeks now. So far, it is performing great, much better than the F4 version that I used to have. Focus is quick and accurate. The focus motor is quiet, not 100 silence though you can hear the motor running if you pay close attention to it.The price is expensive, but the current 200 Nikon discount help a bit…There are other cheaper 3rd party options, but cheaper price comes with caveats such as focus problem and durability. I decided to stay Nikon lens to avoid the hassles with 3rd party lens…Hope this helps.

    David

Seriously this is the 2470 Ive been waiting for I rolled the dice ordering such an expensive lens for my Z6 when the 2470 f4 was already so fantastic. Its not just about the extra few stops for me. There is something truly special about this lens that is hard to put into words. Yes, its sharp as a razor and all the way to the corners for that matter. But there is something so primelike about it as well. The colors, the bokeh and just the overall aesthetic is purely artistic in nature. I guarantee you youll fall in love with it, even if your wallet doesnt

Both the Nikkor S F4 and F2.8 are great lenses. I have both and the quality of the images from both is outstanding. So why buy the F2.8 For the shallow depth of field and better focusing as more light comes into the camera. The downside of the F2.8 is the weight especially when compared to the F4 and the cost. I do wish it was internal focusing like the G version.

  48. blank

    George

Compared to my F mound 2470 2.8 this lens is outstanding. Colors are great Auto focus is excelent and silent. Did I mention SILENT I no longer am afraid to put a mic on my camera if needed. Yes it was expensive but buy cheap buy twice

I was really looking forward to the release of this lens and it hasnt let me down yet. Its replacing my f2.8 2470 Fmount nonVR lens and will probably replace my 50mm f1.4 as well as the 2470 S f4 when its all said and done. The construction and appearance of the lens are solid and the pictures are amazing. I dont shoot a lot of video so the manual focus issue that a lot of reviewers arent happy about dont really affect me.

After using the kit lens for awhile I was surprise at how well it did. It still left me wanting a larger aperture then this f2.8 finally came along. Great features, perfect pairing with both the Z6 Z7. The focus quality could not be better.

I was a little hesitant on purchasing this 2.8 lens since Ive already had the 24 70 F 4 that I purchased with the Z6 camera. I read a lot of reviews and watched many many YouTube reviews of the product and I have to say Im very glad I bought this lens it is incredibly wellbuilt beautifully sharp and well balanced on the camera The build quality between the F4 version is like night and day the 2.8 is very wellbuilt I have been shooting with this lens for about a month and I have to say its a little bit pricey but the results are absolutely stunning I will keep this lens on my camera fulltime

Hands down this is the best 2470mm lens Ive owned. I started with, years ago, the Nikon 2870 f2.8. It was called The Beast back in the day due to its size and weight. I moved on to the 2470 f2.8G with Nano coating and ended up wishing that I had not made the switch. I bought my first Z 7 with the kit 2470 f4 S lens. This lens is far and away better than all three. Yes it is larger and heavier than the f4 version but retracted it still fits in my cars center console. It is much sharper than its Fmount predecessor, most noticeably in the corners. The contrast and color are superb and the light transmission is massive.I had issues with the f4 version with focus shift at certain focal lengths. It really bugged me. This lens has no issues with that whatsoever.Bottom line is Nikon are hitting it out of the park with the S line of lenses for the Z mirrorless cameras.

Very nice lens. I spent past couple of years trying to learn ins and outs of Z6 camera using 35mm and 50mm Z lenses. I tried the 2470 and it opens up lots more possibilities for the camera, both indoors and out.

The Nikkor Z 2470mm f2.8 S lens is optically a very impressive lens. The images are sharp edge to edge even wide open. With optics that control flare, chroma, and compete and excel compared with other lenses in its class. While the lens is large it really isnt much different than an fmount with ftz adapter in size but the z mount S lens weighs less. The additions of the function ring is nice and the backlit display window is handy. I can view the focus range in the dark with just a push of a button. This lens is a workhorse that resolves sharp colorful high resolution images and is a great addition to any professionals camera bag.

I have been buying from ABT for over 10 years now we bought all appliances for our new house and now new cameras. Its an understatement to say ABT customer service is exceptionalThe new Z 2470 f2.8S is just incredible lens particularly on the Z7 that I bought from ABT as well. I use it for videos and stills and is a very versatile lens super quiet when focussing and pretty much no breathing I traded my old 2470 2.8 F mount to get this new one and am so pleased overall. even though i already have the F4 version of this lens, the F2.8 version of the lens is great to have when you need a zoom lens with a higher aperture.the quality of the F2.8 version of the 2470mm is a lot higher than the F4 version. not only is the picture quality better, but it has a dedicated focus ring as well, which is a must have for any camera lens. the customizable control ring is not good enough when it has to be used for manual focus. however, the customizable control ring is great since it can be used for exposure control as well as aperture control as well. its nice to have a ring on the camera to control the aperture instead of having to control that setting in the camera.

I have never used any zoom lens until this 2470 2.8 z lens. All my Nikon lens are primes started from the film days. I like prime lenss compact size, sharpness, contrasts and separations. In general I would prefer quality light travel than zoom lenss conveniences. I am always intimidated by the size and weight of trinity pro zooms. This latest 2470 2.8 is much smaller than F mount counter part, that I can tolerate and carry around. this lens Z6 can fit in my current camera bag with lens hood on. The lens feels really solid and well balanced on the camera, though still a little bit front heavy overtime if hold the camera with only one hand. The zoom ring has nice damp and friction that reminds me of the focus ring on those legacy lens I do like the little display that comes in handy when under little or no light condition. Autofocus on Z6 is fast without making any noise, perfect for taking videos. I decided to go with mirrorless because Z mounts very short 16mm flange focus depth and large size enables outstanding optical potentials Phase detection focusing with mirrorlesss sensor can produce very sharp images If Z6 nails the focus. The color, contrast, sharpness are beyond my surprise, matches my 1.4 prime lenss image qualities. At 70mm I wish the background can be a little creamier since I am used to 85 and 105 primes, but it is not bad, still give you very good separation. The color is vivid, transparent, and detailed. This lens Z6s sensor can produce some great skin tones. With Z6s built in sensor stabilization, I can get sharp picture with two or even three stops slower shutter speed, very impressive and useful for stills in low light. This is one and only native Z lens that I have so far for Z6, and I dont plan to adapt any F mount prime lens on Z6, given its high performance, versatility and reasonable size. I really cannot think of anything negative about this lens. Nikons new Z mount and lens are pretty well done indeed. This lens has changed my mind about the prozoom lens and I really enjoy taking pictures and video with it.

This is the absolute best 2470 ever made. I have the 2470 F4 and a 24120 F4 and several older 2470 lenses and this is just the best or any brand ever. It competes with some primes.

I now have 2 S lenses with the focal range 24 70. Initially it bothered me that Nikon had not put this lens out first or at least at the same time allowing us to chose. I see it now, the f4.0 is the travel or walk around lens and with great performance. This is for the occasion when you really want the extra stop of light. IT is a superior lens, just not cheap.

This lens is a must have for video or photo work. It is near instant focus and completely silent. It is fast and extremely sharp edge to edge. The best part is even for an f2.8 lens it is surprisingly small and light. I love the balance and weight of the z6 paired with the 2470 f2.8 A perfect walk around lens or mid range lens to easily go from semi wide to good focal lengths for portraits. Using this lens for video work it will not pick up any focus motor noise in the audio because there isnt any. The construction is very robust and the lens feels sturdy. The extra function button on the side and the programmable rings are nice. My only critique would be that I wish I had more options on what to use the programmable button and ring for. They are a little bit limited but I still found uses for them.

With its strong build, economical size and weight, and optical excellence, you will never regret the purchase of this lens. It especially excels in indoor low light situations and delivers superb contrast and color. When coupled with a Nikon Z6 or Nikon Z7 camera body, you have the best full frame mirrorless studio equipment on the market.

I bought an earlier sample that was not very sharp, in comparison to the excellent f4 kit lens, but thats one reason to buy from BH they stand behind what they sell. The second sample is sharp, with nicely saturated colors. I take perhaps 80 of my shots within the focal range of this lens, so the additional size and weight compared to the f4 version is acceptable.

I purchased the Nikkor z2470 2.8 lens, along with the Nikon Z6ii from BH Photo thank you for your great service and PayBoo card. After receiving them, I went to our backyard to snap a few quick photos. I made a dozen or so… I wanted to share these particular ones, to show the great resolution, colors, and contrast this cameralens combo provide. One picture is the actual untrimmed version, the next is a heavily cropped version. Its incredible the level of detail present even after significant cropping. These were unaltered JPEGS. All I can say is wow

  92. blank

    Terence

Loved my AFS NIKKOR 2470mm f2.8E ED VR lens except that it was heavy and unwieldy when used with the Z6 plus FTZ adaptor so I traded it in for the equivalent NIKKOR Z lens. I am very happy with the decision. The significantly reduced size and weight make a huge difference. When mounted on the camera the combination is very well balanced to hold. Picture quality is at least as good and the in camera VR works well. The on lens Fn button is a nice extra control programmable from the cameras menu.

The autofocus is fast and silent, the color and contrast are fantastic, its super sharp, and it feels really good balanced on a Z7ii. From the very first shots you will be able to tell this is an extremely high quality lens. It shines through in the files even before any edits are applied. The files just look better, no pixel peeping required. The OLED display feels unnecessary beyond noticing its there occasionally and thinking oh thats neat. Its also not a reason for or against purchasing this lens, to my mind. It would be like saying you dont want a car because you dont like the interior of its glovebox.I was worried that the programmable ring would accidentally turn with normal use, but that hasnt been an issue for me. I have big hands, so I dont think its because Im especially nimble. The sharpness through the aperture range and focal range is, in practical terms, extremely freeing. I chose this over the f4 kit, and I have no regrets from paying a premium for the extra stop. Being able to shoot wide open and with this level of sharpness is amazing. It feels like I dont have to compromise or skew my choices toward the strengths of the lens and away from its weaknesses, because there are no weaknesses.

Nikon has really stepped their game with the new Z 2470mm f2.8 S lens. This lens is sharper across the frame, at all focal lengths, than my previous Nikkor 2470mm f2.8G lens. That is high praise indeed, considering the older Nikkor 2470mm f2.8G lens was the legit midzoom standard for so many years. I also found the micro contrast on this lens to be close or as good as my fixed length Zeiss lens, which was another revelation for me. The images I captured using this lens on my Z7ii at 24mm, 28mm, 35mm and 50mm are as sharp as any of the new Nikon Z Fixed Length S lenses. That in of itself, justifies the high cost of this lens IMHO. The only other Nikon zoom that I know of that can make that claim is the Nikkor 1424mm f2.8G lens. Color and Contrast are excellent. Auto focus on my copy was spot on, and using manual focus just required patience on my part. This lens also delivers for night photography with minimal coma. Make no mistake, this new S lens is special, and worth the heavenly price point.

Great lens for the Nikon Z6 II, definitely happy with the versatility of the 2470 focal range. The 2.8 definitely helps make a better image with bokeh, not too crazy bokeh, but happy with it. I have the non vr version of Nikon 2470 f2. 8, I also have the fuji 1655 2.8 lens. This mirroless version is well ahead of them, Infact this lens is sharper than all my 1.8 f mount prime lenses.Am a wedding and portrait photographer, and seeing how this lens does against flares is first class, the image quality it produces can rival most prime lenses. You simply cant go wrong with this lens. If 2.8 aperture is a good compromise for you on the bokeh side, then you wont miss the primes, its that good.If you can afford it, buy it. If you cant the 2470 f4 is equally a sharp lens. Forget about the f mount on Nikon mirroless, they are simply not good enough.

I had read many reviews praising the sharpness and optical performance of this lens. I have done no systematic testing but my impressions from shooting with it at various focal lengths and apertures is that all of those glowing reviews are justified. My concern had been that it might be too heavy and large compared to f4 version I had received as part on my Z7 kit purchase. That turned out to be an unwarranted concern. On the Z7, I do not find this lens to be noticeably heavy or large. In fact, on the Z7 it feels quite a bit lighter and looks quite a bit smaller than than the F mount 2470 2.8 that I previously used on a D850. Very happy that I decided order this lens.

Also, I really appreciate having the ability to set the LFn button for subject tracking control. Those 2 settings make everything seamless when trying to photograph moving subjects and changing scenes quickly. And did I mention how SHARP this lens is All in a compact, light package compared to my 2470 f.2.8 VR lens with FTZ adapter.

I hemmed and hawed about buying this lens as I figured Id use the adapter on my old 2470, which I love. However the old lens was getting a little sticky so just went for it, and Im glad I did. The clarity is astounding and coupled with the Z7ii, well, a match made in heaven. I print my work on an Epson SC P800 and now I have a trio made in heaven. Im appreciating the light weight as well. I am greatly pleased with this lens. The image quality edge to edge is incredible, great for landscapes. The center quality is great for subject and portraits. Fast auto focus, though I do prefer manual. With the focus ring on the end of the lens as it should be it seems familiar to me. I dont use the lcd screen often but I can see it as valuable for some things. The multifunction ring aperture ring is very handy. Id only take away half a star because it needs a gold ring to show it off as a professional lens. To answer the question most have, yes you need this in your kit.

Best 2470 produced, period. Sharp and the color rendition is amazing. No fringing at all. Only thing I wish they would do is make this internal zooms and not extend when zooming. All manufacturers make their 2470 this way though so i cant nick Nikon for it.

This is a tack sharp lens as I now expect form all the ZMount Nikon lenses. It gives me the wide end for the Z7 and is as sharp, in my opinion, as any of the Hasselblad glass I use on my X1D but weighs only a fraction. As a carry about lens it is on a par with the 2470 f2.8 and the 2470 f4 Zmount lenses.

This is as sharp and contrasty a zoom across this focal range as you can find. It is superior in every way to my adapted lenses, both from Nikon and third party suppliers. Not quite up to the top specs of the stellar S 50mm 1.8, at a fraction of the price, but so much more versatile. Reasonable size and weight adds to its easy of handling on the Z7. The first results from this zoom blew we away when raw images looked superior to post processed images previously shot and postprocessed on nonS lens equivalents. Sure expensive but worth every penny to me for the results rendered. This lens is my go to for travel, wedding, street, product, landscape and closeup photography. No more carrying around a set of square filters as front threads easily accept circular filters for landscapes that are sharp from center to edge. This is the lens to get when you care about achieving the very best. Be prepared for a second mortgage but….

Much better than my old Fmount 2870mm 2.8. Beautiful imagery. The only flaw is that at 24mm, there is some noticeable vignetting. The editing software Im using doesnt have a lens profile for this lens yet. Once it does, it will probably automatically take care of the issue, but even if it doesnt, I dont find it to be a big deal as the corners usually dont have any important parts of the image and frequently, Ill add a vignette on purpose anyway. It has a control dial which can be programmed for various functions. I have it set to aperture, which is great for video because it will adjust smoothly as opposed to the control dial, which jumps to each fstop.

Prior to going mirrorless with Z6, I did some of my best work with D750 and 24702.8G. My Z6 kit included the excellent f4 version as a kit lens. It gave great results, but I was ready for the next level innfamily and group portraits and lowerlight evening and street photography. I knew about the additional LCD display but initially that was not the deal maker. Once I got the lens and started using it, I learned to very much appreciate the third control ring which I kept as aperture control and left the LCD dedicated to this. I very much appreciate the option to make other display and control ring choices via camera or lens menus.Aperture control via the rearmost ring and LCD is a throwback to a much earlier generation of lenses with an aperture control ring and depth of field markings, which this lens shows with a bar in the LCD window.Although Ive had this a relatively short time, I am ready for prolevel event assignments in full confidence. It gives an imaging edge that is hard to describe where the camera and lens become totally transparent and even exceed the wonderful performance of my 2470G.

I typically do not write reviews, but I felt compelled to afterusing it for 6 months. This is by far the sharpest 2470 that I have ever used. It is noticeably sharper than the Nikon 2470 f2.8 FL and Tamron G1 and G2 equivalents. Im not saying that those lenses are not sharp its just that this lens is noticeably sharper. The biggest validation of this has come from family and friends who are not into photography. Several of them have commented on the detail and sharpness of the images. This lens shows the real potential of the Z mount. This sharpness is especially helpful when cropping. Regarding weather conditions, Ive used this lens in light rain, hot and cold conditions with no problems. Autofocus has been fast and sure. It is very expensive, but the IQ matches the costs.

I had purchased the Z6 with the kit lens and really liked it. But I missed the ability to shoot at f2.8 for low light and for DOF. I read all the reviews for this lens and finally decided to buy it. I am so very glad I did. This lens, married to the Z6, is the best lensbody combination I have ever owned. The focusing is pinpoint accurate. In the past, I would be disappointed by images in which my subject was out of focus while the background was tack sharp. I never solved that mystery but this combo has eliminated it. The pinpoint focus is fantastic when I focus on a models eye, I can count on the eye being sharp. The confidence that the image will be properly focused has allowed me to become more creative with my imagery. This lens lives up to its hype. So glad I bought it

I was hesitant to spend this much on a single zoom lens, but Im glad I did. The physical dimensions and weight balance perfectly with the Z7 body. To my surprise, the lens felt familiar right away and was easy to use in automated mode or manually as needed. Im a lefty if that matters. I was very impressed with the depth of field range given the f2.8 max aperture, and the results can be very dramatic providing you know how to control the Z7s quirky autofocus program not the lens fault. It is a quiet and solid performer, and as other reviews have indicated, the picture quality shows edgetoedge sharpness. Yes, its worth the extra price.

This lens is an excellent one for both professionals and experienced hobbyists alike. It does an excellent job at staying sharp edge to edge while being slightly smaller in size as compared to Nikons DSLR 2470 lenses. Additionally, its bokah at f2.8 is beautiful, even when using it during semilandscape portrait photography. The OLED screen is not particularly valuable to me however, and it might have been nice to save a little on the cost of the lens if it was not included. This screen might be valuable for night photographers in certain situations however.

I was impressed with the performance of the Nikkor Z 2470 F2.8 lens.I recently did a photo shoot and the clarity, sharpness and speed at which the lens focuses is amazing. No hunting for the subject, just tack sharp

Ive used 2470 range throughout my professional career. It has been my go to focal length for 90 of personal and professional results. As to not repeat the same that others have said, here are mine reasons for this 2470 zmount.I find that 2470 f mount isnt well balanced in the z bodies. It might not be a big deal for a casual user but when Im photographing several portrait sessions back to back, or a wedding day or even full day of family vacation, a balanced tool is a benefit. So weightergonomics are extremely important to me.Image quality I would have maintenained my fmount is I would have seen to change in image quality but I made a mistake if comparing 2470 f mount to 2470 z f4 and f2.8. this glass blows all the others out of the water.I hate switch lenses in the middle of an assignment… For a year, Ive nearly exclusively shot with 35 1.8 which I love btw, but Ive found my self in situations where a bit what is a bit tight composiyion would have been better. At this point, Ive used this lens for 2 weeks with shooting assignments back to back. My hand doesnt hurt, I can deliver great images with optical crop and not digitalor post production, deliver sharp and crispy images for my self and my clients.

Probably Nikons best 2470 2.8 lens to date. It feels much lighter than my older 2470 ED Fmount lens. Plus I like the little OLED display as it allows me to frame scenes to the exact focal length I want, plus the focus scale is helpful for doing things like astrophotography. Overall would recommend this for any serious Nikon Z mount shooter. The 2470 f4 isnt a bad lens either, so if you cant afford this, go look at that one very good lens for the money. But for professionals and those doing paid work that need this focal range, this is a good option.

This lens delivers what the Z system promises. It is compact for a f 2.8 lens, sharp from corner to corner and a joy to handle. I appreciate the additional control ring which I use for setting exposure compensation. This is especially useful on a mirrorless camera where you can see the result immediately.Looking forward to the next lenses for the Z system.

I have been a Nikon user since 1964. The combination of the z7 and the 24 70 F2.8 lens produces the best pics of any lenscamera combo I have ever used. Its sharp ay all focal lengths and F stops.

I am a professional photographer who is currently using the Nikon D3s, D3x, and the Leica M8. I have looked at Sony, and Canon Mirror less and I decided to stay with Nikon and I am glad that I did This lens is tack sharp from corner to corner and the colors are awesome. Auto focus is spot on, and using the lens in manual mode is just fine as well. I have been using mirror less cameras for over 45 years with the venerable Leica M system with manual focus. This lens is right up there with my Leica Sumicron f2. Now my D3s will be my back up camera and the Nikon Z7 with the outstanding 2470 2.8 S will be my primary camera. with almost half the weight I am one happy customer

This lens arrived in within two days sent by B and H. Wow what a great service It is all true what other already wrote about this lens. Very sharp at all settings. The direct readable depth of filed is great to have. Technically perfect. Even bokeh is good.It is not heavy and works great on any Z camera. It was so good I even found issues with Z7.Shooting with it I found myself uninspired by this lens and its zoom range. It is just a very good vanilla lens. Other may have the ability to take great pictures with this lens. I couldnt.I sent it back and reverted to my Z501.8 and my 851.4 FTZ combo, which are better for my use.

I really like the size and weight of the 2470 kit lens. It is sharp and I didnt feel the need to spend for the f2,8 until I found situations calling for the wider aperture. What a pleasure the larger and heavier lens turned out to be. Focus is fast and images are very sharp. Color is accurate and when wide open the backgrounds are creamy. Although heavier, the weight is wellbalanced on the z7 and z6. The cost is hefty, so I can only recommend it if it fits your budget.

Coming from exclusively shooting manual focus primes, this lens was a big change. I needed something with AF and a moderate zoom range for a compact video setup, and this is perfect. This lens, combined with the in camera vignette and distortion control in my Z6, produces some pretty great videos and images. What more could you ask from a f2.8 2470 Its big, has some weight, but can do the job of 5 prime lenses well. AF is super fast, but again I have very little experience with AF in general. My two issues with this lens are around the focus and control rings. Im just not used to the focus by wire systems yet. I wish there was clarification on if, in video mode, this lens has a constant focus for distance turned on the focus ring. One nice thing is the aperture translations smoothly in video mode. Not like a declicked aperture, but more like it transitions between settings, rather than hard jumps every 13 of a stop.Great lens, still have more to learn about it, but is great with my Z6.

I suppose I am one of the lucky ones who got this lens before it sold out. All I can say is wow I have had the opportunity to test this out against both previous versions of the 2.8 2470s VR included. This lens is sharper than both of them across apertures and focal lengths. The IQ is fantastic. I almost purchased the 2470 VR…. I am so glad I did not. I performed tests because I watched this video posted concerning testing and wanted to verify his findings. He was spot on. httpswww.youtube.comwatchvjYpRziUSJOA

Love this lens after owning the Nikon 2.8 G for many years. This lens is about an inch shorter and significantly lighter. The focus motors are deadly quiet and the third ring to have additional controls is awesome. Only complaint is the throw amount you have to spin the ring to zoom all the way in is longer than the 2.8G but you quickly get used to it. The native glass is absolutely worth it

I have previously owned the original 2470mm ED and 2470mm ED VR. The original 2470mm suffered from distortionvignetting wide open while the 2470mm ED VR felt far too heavy and was soft wide open. Nikon got this lens right from build quality to overall sharpness.Being a native lens to the Z7, I am very pleased with this investment. If you have switched to Nikons mirrorless system, you wont regret this purchase.

Earlier this year as Nikon started releasing additional lenses for the Z6Z7 I decided to trade in my Canon gear and jump into Nikon, from which I had strayed many years ago as I transitioned from film to digital. I bought the Z7 with the 2470 f4 kit lens and took it on a couple of trips. The light weight was fantastic, and I got some beautiful shots. I tend to shoot mainly landscapes, indoor andoutdoor architecture, and family portraits. After several months and a couple thousand photos, I noticed that nearly all my indoor shots were taken at f4. I wasnt sure initially that Id be craving light gathering power, but reviewing my photos convinced me that I needed more. I also tend to pixel peep, and I noticed the kit lens, while excellent, is just a tad soft at 100 crop. Based on reviews of the 2470 f2.8 and Nikons 300 discount, I decided to purchaseit. Incidentally, I also own the Z 35mm f1.8 prime, the Z 85mm f1.8 prime, and the Z 1430 f4 zoom. Havent reviewed them yet, but the two primes are excellent, and the zoom is very goodespecially considering its small size.My first impression of the 2470 f2.8 was that it is huge and heavy. But this is in comparison to its f4 little brother. On the camera, walking around, I quickly got used to it. I would say the weight is less a factor than the sizeif you want to be inconspicuous. I will take it on trips to visit family, but Im not sure I would take it to, say, Europe. The f4 is better suited for extended walkabout travel. So how is the image quality Simply fantastic for a zoom. I recentlytook family photos in a snowy landscape, and the sharpness, contrast, color rendition, and bokeh are superb. Ridiculouslygood. Its almost embarrassing to share the photos with my friends and family because it appears Im bragging about my photography skills. Indoors, that extra little bit of bokeh at f2.8 also gives me outstanding photos, making the subject stand out from the background. Even with a flash, I find myself using f2.8 most of the time, and rarely stopping down to f4. To me, the difference between f2.8 and f4 is significant. You get that extra wowfactor with f2.8.In order to compare the 2470 f2.8 with the 2470 f4, I set up a scene under controlled lighting, and I mounted the camera on a tripod and used a wireless shutter release. I shot in manual mode, with vibration reduction off, ISO 400 at 1320 s. I decided to include the Z 35mm f1.8 prime in my comparison, so I shot everything at 35 mm focal length. Results are interesting. The prime is the winner for sharpness, but the 2470 f2.8 is very close. The 2470 f4 is good, but not as sharp. All three lenses have similar excellent color rendition. After reviewing the images, I repeated the whole session just to make sure I hadnt made a mistake. Results were identical. The attached images are from the repeat session these are 100 crops saved from raw .NEF with no postprocessing, representinggasponly 3 of the total image area.As for ease of use, I had to get used to the focus ring being near the far end of the lens. At first I was trying to manual focus with the control ring, which controls aperture by default very handy. Focal length adjustment could be smoother. The lens is very quiet. All in all, this will likely be the lens I leave on the camera most of the time. Worth every penny.

I have had this lens to use with my Z7 for about a month. Generally, I would say every good thing thats been written about it is true. Excellent image quality and unprecedented sharpness. There is, however, one very frustrating problem, discovered during my first serious, high pressure photo shoot with it The AFMF switch on the lens is located in a place where it is very easy to bump while holding the camera to shoot portrait mode. You think you are shooting auto focus, but end up shooting manual and not knowing it. This usually means blurry images until you notice and switch back.. Highly frustrating. This problem might be alleviated when Nikon releases a MDB battery holder with an extra shutter button on the side. Until then, there needs to be some sort of protective sleeve devised to protect against accidental switching.

I had the lens a week before I had a chance to use it due to the types of jobs I had scheduled during the time period. Yesterday I had a location session for a high school senior where I mostly use my 70200 lens for subject separation. I swapped out the tele zoom for the new 2470 2.8 for a different perspective. I was in awe of what I was seeing. The lens seems so much crisper and quick than my 2470 f4. Im not easily impressed but I can see that Ill be pulling this out of my bag more often. Im not a pixelpeeper or a really technical date kind of guy, but I really convinced this is a better lens. Ive had several versions of the Fmount 2470 and this feels so much more professional in its operation and results.

Its a very nice zoom lens. The weight is controlled well. The LFn button is a great addition to the lens given I find it difficult to reach Fn2 on my Z6. I have used it to take about 1200 photos over two days. Very satisfied over all, though I thought with the new Zmount, it could have an aperture wider than 2.8…

This lens is a really high quality and will not disappoint in the quality of the images it produces. The build quality is also excellent. I really love this lens, but it is a little hefty. If that bothers you the 2470 f4 may be a better option for you. But for what it delivers, Im willing to suck it up and accept the extra weight.
